You can bring back 2 features from 1.0 what would it be?

I noticed there are good ideas that were never brought back in 2.0+ and thought what does the community think? What 2 features would you like to see return? It could be very simple like logging in and having a randomized dream described in the chat or a companion that follows you on your adventures.

I have only seen people play the game and never have myself. What would you like to see return if you could pick something?

All casts had the option to either be AoE or Single Target. You could toggle this feature. Had that still existed, it would of opened a lot of interesting design space.

In addition, you used to be able to cast while moving. Your movement speed was reduced a bit, so you couldn't kite, but movement while casting was a thing. Sometimes I miss it.

I miss the various things that could happen in you logged off in the bed of an inn room; I literally only finally broke the habit of still logging off in a bed this past January.

But other than that, cross-class skills.

If there's anything I don't want back, it's the original Black Shroud map.

Path Companions. The chocobo companion is good, but not great. I miss my Moonkeeper GLA and her constant flirting with Enki. :p

Hell, I miss the Path of the Twelve itself, it was so much better than the Scions of the Seventh Dawn it turned into post-Calamity. Minfilia wasn't a dumb blonde and annoying and knew how to use the Echo at will, Tataru wasn't an airhead and actually had a backbone, and they were far more secretive and not 'Primal-and-Ascian-slayers-R-Us', they were more interested in the delving into the Echo and protecting those who could use it. I miss the Path. :(

I miss path companions too!! I loved they had little stories.

I miss having overworld enemies that could easily kill max level/capped/overgeared players. The world felt dangerous. Also, maybe it was just me but trial fights were hard (granted a lot of that was due to lag). I also miss the variety in classes. I still have found memories of healing Ifrit on Thaumaturge (cross-class skills and such).

Gear tailored to the race and gender rather than being lazily resized for all with maybe minor appearance changes.

I'd be perfectly fine if they brought it back but you adopted kids from the orphanage and taught them how to be adventurers like in Skyrim. You could level them, they would have stories and hang around your house when not in use walking around / sleeping / cleaning. I had a discussion about this with a few others and we were hyped about the possibilities. Of course, that won't ever happen. Imagine if you train them and they learn from how you play such as dodge timing, rotations etc... lol, I'm sure their servers would melt xD

Hamlet Defense and gear being tailored to race and gender (like actual holes for tails and not just clipped through robes).

If the features can merge with our current stuff, rather than be pure 100% how it was before then there are a few things like:

• Open zones (but with our higher level of detail)
• Animations (but with a smooth animation canceling system so each movement isn't a forced cutscene)
• Path Companions
• Hamlet Defense
• Ascians that appear as reapers, the no shadow thing also had me always looking at every character closely to see which was a fun little game
• Higher detail models (but no flower pots that have as many poly as my character lol, priorities...)
• NMs in the world often had unique items to obtain, so killing one was fun to get that special item. At this point B rank hunts (2.0+) are just there if you happen to get your 100 token weekly. I don't mind the latter's reward but I sitll miss the former's 'character' as I feel the items helped give life to the world.
• On that about life, our simpler gear often makes gear feel lifeless and 'just' a rung in the ladder. To the point gear may as well be just for glamour because the stat variations could be managed by a few Materia alone. I personally miss being excited to read a new item's stats, at this point that experience is largely irrelevant (almost always, especially if you're not at 'the' end game gear).
• Could just be the game is 'old' for me now but I felt there was a bit more mystery in 1.0, just like how things were written and presented. I played with the twelve stones so much with different animations just wondering if the devs snuck something into them, having the ring of your star, all that.. it's something I don't even consider anymore as I don't feel FFXIV would do it. Perhaps its a comment as a larger whole but I don't feel FFXIV is preoccupied with the fantasy role play which isn't awful (the game is still damn good) but it's something I wish someone there was responsible for attempting. And not in some weird obtuse way like "we made this content, job, feature, etc, useless because of role play" I mean like making sure it's still quality too lol (like as a random example if FFXIV wanted to let you roleplay as a werewolf a fun way would be more like how Skyrim does it, and an unfun way would be stunning and taking away control of your character while you watch the dumbest AI flounder about because you've 'gone mad'). One of the few things I point to WoW and still think they've done, and still do, a much better job at (naturally I still have a huge bias to FFXIV, but that would be one element where I think WoW has both more opportunities for fantasy role play via mechanics in game and when it does also does often better than FFXIV).

as other have said my path complain and also the ability to earn more seal/exp for duties if the party had members from all 3 grand companies (i know this would hard to due with duty finder but it was still nice)

The split between the Circle of Knowing and the Path of the Twelve made a lot of sense, you know? Sure, the Circle of Knowing's name was a little on-the-nose, but having the Path be a secretive research group devoted to the study of the Echo and how to utilize it (while staying under the radar because, y'know, the Echo was not something to be abused, and also not everyone trusted people with weird powers), while the Circle were "Hey, so, the Sharlyan policy of trying to do the Star Trek Prime Directive kind of sucks, so some of us are going rogue and bringing our knowledge to Eorzea to try to help you prevent the apocalypse... especially since, right now, it looks like you're dealing with several possible ones at once."

The Circle and Path working together made sense; the Echo was a useful tool, and anything they learned of use could be filtered out through the Circle to allow the Path to remain secret. And Louisoix leaving word that Minfilia should bring the remaining Archons into the Path and combine their charters made narrative sense as Louisoix's intention, given the sort-of-family-ish relationship he and Minfilia had.

But the "public organization trying to aid in stabilizing and protecting Eorzea" (and later all of the Source) charter of the Circle is kind of in conflict with the "secretive organization dedicated to the study of the Echo and related phenomena" of the Path. Most notably in how the Scions are openly advising the leaders of Eorzea, publicly acknowledged for their role in things, etc... and yet still largely keep their base of operations secret and concealed.

Though in terms of 1.0 callbacks (ShB spoilers)...

I did love the fact that if you map Norvrandt to pre-Calamity Eorzea, Nabaath Areng is basically where Ul'dah is. And in 1.0, the original Waking Sands was hidden in Ul'dah; it wasn't moved to Vesper Bay until the rebuilding after the Calamity. (Heck, Vesper Bay as a town wasn't built until after the Calamity.)

So when you visit with Minfilia's lingering soul in the ruins of Nabaath Areng, you are actually meeting with her where the original Path of the Twelve had their base of operations. And thus to say your farewells to her, you return to the Waking Sands one final time. Even if only metaphorically/symbolically.

(And now I'm remembering that Ul'dah always seemed to be the player hub in 1.0, the way Limsa is now. I guess even the playerbase habits changed after the Calamity!)

I mean, yes, the fights were harder in 1.0, but as you note, a large portion of that difficulty was less due to harder mechanics and more because the network code was jank as heck.

(I mean, the network code is still jank as heck—witness that the current player-written MNK job optimization document for savage raiding is literally titled "Game's Haunted" and has sections like "Generally Cursed Things", "Nightmare Frontier" and whatnot all dedicated to How the Jank Affects You. It's just less jank. The jank is now whale-sized rather than the size of Midgardsormr as in 1.0... and by that, I mean the World Serpent of real-world Norse mythology, not the dragon in FFXIV.)

That said, I agree on missing the sense of danger in the world. Part of why I enjoy Eureka is because there's a genuine feeling of threat in there if you're careless which is lacking in normal overworld content. But I also recognize that's not a thing that people generally want these days... even many of us who played classic MMOs where the world itself was full of threat and death had serious consequences. If we were playing those games in high school, now we have jobs, lives, kids, other hobbies, whatever. Losing two character levels due to some giant mob sitting on the path to a quest you needed felt like a challenge then; now, grinding back to where you had been could feel like a chore in the midst of normal life.

(Though, I mean, with COVID putting half of the world on hold, I suppose right now we do have time for all that again...)

I would like to bring back the ability to request repairs from a friend. I’d not want the required material like it used to have in 1.0

As an omnicrafter who gets frustrated when my static has to drop the instance so non-crafters can repair at a vendor, then queue back in... yes, this. Let me repair their gear in the instance between pulls and save us time. Please.

1: Springtime Coerthas. That was the most beautiful zone in the game and they completely destroyed it just to have an ice zone. They made the other areas looks so wonderful and dropped a big poo on Coerthas.

2: Overworld content that was more than fates. Like the original relics. They were complicated, they were difficult, they were not just handed out like Halloween candy. I am fine with making the questline a little easier, but everything in the overworld is just fates and it's frankly boring. Bozja and Eureka both had so much potential but they were reduced to just fate grinds. I would loved Bozja to be more like hamlet defense or the ffxi campaign that they were made out to be like. But nope, just fates with a different name and arbitrary rules like participant limits. They innovated so much during the course of version 1, but since relaunch its been corridor dungeons, arena mega bosses and fates. I mean, I know they want to cater to the casual crowd, but they can still be innovative while keeping things simple. /rantover

3: Path companions, the OG trusts.

4: buffs and debuffs, just dps and heals with strict rotations gets super boring

5: Notorious Monsters with decent respawns in general areas that dropped actually good loot

6: Shards and Crystals dropping from mobs.

7: Having to collect items to fight primals instead of just queueing at random.

8: The need to make friends because the world was dangerous and the content was easier (and a ton more fun) with friends.

9: Darker themes. Not every story needs a happy ending.

10: I would love the original zones to be expanded with new maps so we get more of what we lost back. We are missing at least 2/3 of mor dhona for instance. All zones are a fraction of what they were.

To be fair, I don't think this one is entirely on SquareEnix, or even on 'casual' players. ARR had some dungeons where they were experimenting with multiple paths and whatnot, and in ARR (and even Heavensward), raids had more than just a single boss fight in a big arena. They were clearly willing to follow that path!

But people started optimizing. Why take the side paths in Haukke Manor, when you can just blow through to the end? Why go into the treasure rooms in Qarn? Why even bother to get the pieces to solve the puzzle? Forget about particular mob mechanics, just gather everything and pull it as far as you can, burn it all down at once.

Even now, when the devs do branch out to try something different—like the Great Hunt (Extreme), or the mechanics challenge in Bardam's Mettle—a vocal portion of the playerbase groans about it being weird or different or just plain inefficient to run compared to other content.

I mean, the playerbase demonstrated that if given dungeons that had multiple side areas to wander into, puzzles to solve, and whatnot... well, we'd treat it as a corridor dungeon and pull until a wall stopped us, ignoring every puzzle possible to ignore. So SquareEnix started giving us corridor dungeons where you pull until a wall stops you. I kinda feel like we as players bear some of the blame there.

(I do agree with all your points otherwise, though.)

Every race (and both genders of those races) (if they had their opposite gender.) having different death animations. A wipe would look more realistic (and less weird) if everyone didn’t collapse the exact same way.

Only 2?!

1.} Absolutely Auto-Hide chat log. It makes the screen so much more clean and you really get to immerse yourself into the game when its doing its own thing when people are quiet.
2.} Quality cutscenes. If 1.0 did anything right, it was their cutscenes. The 1.0 development team clearly loved their game. Unfinished, and a mess, yes, but loved very dearly.

I wasn't here for 1.0 but I did start during the ARR beta. From that era, I'd bring back 8-man feast.

The only way you'll get players to interact with the dungeons more is reinventing the dungeons themselves.

There is many ways for dungeons to be more open rather than linear, but the way the Developers have done so far that is not going to happen at this point.

I wouldn't be surprised if FFXIV is ending soon (if this is the last expansion coming up) because of the inherent issues with this game that they can't simply redo.


Actually maybe it will give them a excuse to make a new final fantasy MMO and learn what worked and what did not.

- More seamless connectivity between zones (aka no loading black screen)
- Fluid animations in cutscenes... and overall just fluid animations.

I never played 1.0 but watching some videos, I really like how smooth movement looked back then. I assume this had to be changed since combat is much more snappy and faster now, but there were small little details to the 1.0 animations, like your character swaying their hips as they're about to turn, or coming to a natural stop when they go from walking/running to standing.

I just want elements to matter and to have corsair thats all

I agree, honestly. And CLL is a perfect example; you can blast through the middle section and ignore the prisoners OR you can try to save them and get extra rewards. People do the prisoners because the rewards are worth it... at least for now. (Though let's be honest, if you've got a healer with Essence of the Ordained and Lost Death, it's not really 'try to save them', it's usually just "click a button and move on.")

But the thing is, we also have a lot of people in the community who complain about effort entailed in getting things. And I won't even say they're 100% wrong; the overall MMO crowd's age has pushed older, and those of us who were playing MMOs in high school and over summer break and whatnot now have fewer hours to put towards them due to Life. Which can make some people less eager to tackle a longer effort to grind things than they would've once been willing to do.

If they had groups of dungeons where various side rooms had challenges where you could earn tokens that could be exchanged for glamour items or something? (Think Bozjan Clusters here.) Sure, people would be willing to do it! Some folks would want to run the dungeons over and over and get those tokens so they could farm all the glamour (or mounts, or whatever).

But there'd be some folks who were like "I want to do other things in this game than run the same three dungeons, that glamour should be accessible in the Mog Station as well." And there'd be folks like "This is terrible. I just want to get through and to the end when I get that dungeon, and all these people want to make it take longer by going in these side rooms."

And I wouldn't be terribly surprised if eight months down the road, we have people who have already upgraded all their Resistance gear groaning about people rushing to save all the prisoners in CLL when they don't have to bother doing it.

There's no decision that SquareEnix can make that will please everyone; that's true of any game, but it's particularly true with MMOs where your play experience is directly dependent on everyone else's. And it's not even like there's a wrong way and a right way to play; I might want an instance with more depth and branches where I can dig in deeply, and someone else might want a shorter one so they can log off afterwards and go do something non-computer related.

And neither preference is wrong, but they are in conflict.

And I think it's a sign of the original MMO crew getting older that the balance of player preference (or at least, vocal player preference) seems to have shifted since 1.0... and that SquareEnix has adapted accordingly. Even if there are parts of 1.0's design philosophy I miss. (Albeit maybe not always the 1.0 implementations of that philosophy.)

#1 It's a toss between better cutscenes or better dungeons. The cinematography was certainly better for some cutscenes in 1.0, and weren't you rewarded extra for doing more(tasks?) in certain dungeons?

#2 I totally miss the run-stop animation(s). I know it wouldn't be able to come back in quite the same way, because of how content is run now, but PSO2 doesn't seem to have issue with it.

Because it interfered with efficient spell casting in battle (it's called 'animation lock', where you couldn't cast until you stopped moving completely), taking that extra second or two to come to a stop when moving around in a battle just annoyed people too much (and that was on top of 1.0's slower battle system).

So it's removal was a concession to better gameplay, as a means of speeding up battles (I mean, we're still getting people complaining the battles still are "too slow" in ARR, so nothing much has changed on that front.).

Once again, you can't have your cake and eat it too.

just commenting some popular points:

-mocap for cutscenes
There were some clips during one of the 14 hour streams showing that motion capture is used (again?) since at least Heavensward, although mostly for combat animations (both player and enemy). But there were also some cutscene examples, like Exdeath getting succ'd into the void or the Lise vs Fordola duel during early Stormblood MSQ.
Also cutscene quality has already improved greatly during the last few patches, gotta give that to the devs

that's still just different (better?) character lightning. Miqo'te butts were just as flat in 1.0, you just had some extra shading emphasising the curves and thus making it look bigger
