Or, hear me out: You can pay attention to the option you select and to the confirmation window that comes up when you select it. =O
They should honestly just rename "Retrieve Materia" to "Remove Materia" and that would make it a billion times better.. I dont know why its worded like it is now honestly..
It's a hold over from when they were named retrieve materia and materia assimilating so there wasn't confusion. They changed the latter to extract materia when they changed how spiritbond works and so it became confusing because they now sound synonymous. If it helps, I like to think of it this way: retrieve implies getting something back from the item that you previously had while extract implies getting something completely new out of it.
I've recently discovered the "customise subcommand menu" setting and you can move commands to a second tier of menu instead of having them immediately visible in the list. I did that with the Retrieve command to hide it since I'll only need it rarely and not in a hurry.
Feels like the option to make materia from spiritbond should be "Create Materia" or something.
"Extract" is accurate though - you're drawing out the spiritbond energy from the item so it coalesces into materia... I suppose that's technically creating it, but the implication doesn't ring quite right to me.
The best equivalent I can think of is that saying you "create" the materia would be like filling a glass with water and then saying you created a glass of water. You didn't create or transform any of the components, just moved them from A to B.
Or perhaps a better analogy would be wringing water out of a wet cloth and saying you created water by doing that.
I tend to be against dev work being used to fix non-existent issues. OP wasn't asking to use the button. They were asking for a feature implementation. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
How about you recommend the Extraction button directly instead of trying to farm your own upvotes by bringing me into it? =O
Actually, how exactly can someone choose the wrong option when the freaking confirmation windows are so different?

Yeah that doesn't quite work, because we actually do talk like that if you used a similar usage as we use now.
You are right. We don't "create" water by transferring water from one point to another. On the other hand, we say water is created or formed by two hydrogen atoms and an oxygen atom. Your analogy also doesn't work because we are not removing materia from it. We are not removing spiritbond to get spiritbond; by the powers of aether mumbo jumbo we form a materia of a previously nebulous state to become a static thing. Spiritbond is used to produce or create materia.
We often use the word "create" when the input and output are more arcane or it's hard to attribute it within the context of our language. A film or popular series has creators, even though the components and inputs include directors, CGI, acting, etc. Even something as arbitrary as a file creation might seem like it comes from nothing, but it's instantiated from memory and vacant binary we can arrange the bits and bytes to arbitrarily convert it.
