If Arcanist could do it...

So, since arcanists can be two different roles by lvl 30 with summoner and scholar (with both jobs sharing xp and a weapon type in books), why not apply it to some other jobs as well?

For example:
- Pugilist to Monk (DPS) or Puppeteer (Tank)
Puppeteers used knuckles in FFXI so I thought it could work. Now, my idea for puppeteer is that it would mimic your combos instead of being a too much of a pet class like FFXI. Imagine something like Hugh Jackman and Atom at the end of the movie Real Steal.

- Machinist (DPS) or Corsair (Healer)
Based on how I understood it, the corsair is a support class in XI. I could have misunderstood though.

- Gladiator to Paladin (Tank) or Rune Knight (DPS)
In Dnd, the rune knight's skills don't exactly involve casting damaging spells. Rather, it's more of buffing yourself with runes. Something like, imbue your shield with the rune of wind and have a higher chance to dodge attacks (solely projectiles in Dnd). This way, it could help distinguish itself from paladin and red mage.

- Marauder to Warrior (Tank) or Green Mage (Healer)
I really want a green mage. They will wield hammers but will have the same auto attack animation as axes.

Of course, one of the issues would be the job storyline. Why would these base jobs choose the alternatives? Depending on how it's written it could work. Instead of the spiritual nature of monks, pugilists can go the route of a tinkerer in puppeteer. Something like that. XD

Another issue would be that my idea would ideally be available at level 30, so there might be people too lazy to do level 30 job quests with a level 80 character (since both paths would share xp).

Lastly, I don't know how easy or difficult it would be to add new weapons that start from level 30 to fit the new alternative roles like adding knuckles with tenacity, guns with piety/intelligence, etc.

These are just my thoughts while taking a shower and reading a thread that heavily compares XI and XIV. Thought it be nice to share. :D

I was actually having a discussion about this concept with some friends the other day, each time it gets brought up here though people remind us that the devs hated the issues they had with branching jobs from arcanist and that they won't ever do it again unfortunately. I'd personally love this so that we could get more mileage and variety from the classes (this wouldn't work for jobs that don't have a "simpler" class to pull from) and could potentially see different versions of classes in different roles. Yes this would be quite the undertaking but it's all a question of money and effort in the end and we all know that the former is not in high supply despite this game being a cash cow.

As an aside, corsair in XI was a damage dealer with support options (much like XIV's ranged classes with the eventual exception of mch) that would use its cards to give various buffs to the party.

And on the topic of puppetmaster, I would love to see them migrate over to Eorzea as well what with the mammets that are common to the world but after their struggles with smn I don't think they have the chops to make it work in a satisfying way and we'll most likely see PUP as another limited job if we see it at all sadly. As for rune knight, your description fits closely with the rune fencer job that is also in XI where it tanks and uses elemental runes to raise resistances and get special bonuses as well as protect the party. I could see it being adapted to a DPS in XIV but it might step on the toes of pld perhaps or feel too samey by being another sword wielder.

Pretty sure SE said they regret this decision because it made balancing both smn and sch troublesome.

Limited jobs would be fine if it were purely solo-able and not be capped 20 levels below max. I love blue mage; I hate them here. I mean, most skills are only obtainable in instances where you need a party. Solo play my ass. XD Horrible setback for a class I really love which is why I feel strongly about it. Oh well. It is what it is sadly. Screw it if they do the same for PUP if ever though. :(

It'll never happen again. Sch and Smn were hell to balance and the devs literally saud they regretted doing that and would never join another class like that again. They need to get rid of the classes ingeneral and just do jobs like they have been doing. There's nothing good about trying to change points everytime you change jobs becaue they share a base. Thank god that's over.

Isn't Scholar basically Green Mage?

Drui- err, Conjurer splitting into White Mage or Geomancer could be so easy, but yeah, they stated since Summoner/Scholar they're done with jobs sharing a same base class.

I know they said they regret it back then but now game and how damage scales works is very different so im sure they could do it now but wont happen

The original design was that all future jobs would have branched off of classes, for example dark knight was going to be a dps branch off of gladiator using a two handed sword, but due to all the balance issues they suffered with SMN and SCH they chose to abandon that route, things such as stat point allocation meaning you could only play one of them effectively, SCH doing way too much dps for a healer due to having a dps for a base class (In certain situations in early ARR SCH did more damage than SMN) and having to balance SCH healing around MND when they had INT as a base stat.

They have solved a lot of these issues now but they’ve solved them by basically removing them entirely. Stat point allocation is gone, practically all of SMN and SCH’s moves and traits have been separated and their moves have been adjusted to be calculated off their proper main stat. So while it could work, at this point why bother when they could just add a separate job?

The only “advantage” to having the class linked to multiple jobs now is that you can level one job and have the other levelled for free, which brings a whole set of its own issues such as a dps levelling all the way to 80 and then having a free level 80 healer they have no idea how to play.

Given how the game works right now, where your stats come from your gear and players have a separate gear set for each of their jobs (with different materia at least), I don't see how "balance" is still a problem. The only truly unique thing is your job's soul gem.

I could see this being a common player objection, "I want to be a Green Mage, but I don't want to Marauder not even for a mere 30 levels". The easiest way to avoid that is to make "Green Mage" just another job like Samurai, Machinist, Dancer, etc... that anyone can switch to.

Arcanist was designed to split and even then it's been a headache for SE and they've tried to differentiate summoner and scholar more over time and regret doing it the way they did.

Taking classes that were NOT designed to branch like this and trying to force it on would just be clunky and add problems, when they could just continue the current trend of releasing new jobs not tied to classes.
