I've waited for six years to rise out of the hollowed out mesa of Little Ala Mhigo and recreate the opening credits for Airwolf, and I can't fly high enough to do it!
Most disappointing patch ever!
I was excited to finally be able to fly, yet immediately disappointed as most zones only allow you to fly a few feet off the ground and constantly remind you every few seconds that you can't fly any higher. And when you see something cool in the distance and head over to explore you smack into an invisible wall.
I'm hoping that the next expansion will be set in the old zones now so that they can fill in the massive amounts of completely empty land with something interesting.
I bet two lalafells, that most people won't get this reference. But I chuckle none the less.
I think it is probably the most helpful and enjoyable in Coerthas Central Highlands. It seems like they opened up a good bit of that zone to explore. Otherwise yeah, it is just a minor convenience in most zones by the looks of it. I don't feel it was necessary to begin with, but it's nice.
This only makes my trip to the T3 Thanalan soil node that much faster.
Can you fly to the Isle of Umbra?
I was disappointed I couldn't check out wanderers palace.
Yes.
Also I was similarly disappointed at the height you could fly. Don't love that I still have to fly around the mountains in Southern Thanalan going from Little Ala Mhigo to Forgotten Springs. It would be nice if future patches raise the ceiling. But also I can't be too upset since the flying was another of those pieces of content that were added due to work people did on their own time rather than something officially initiated by Square.
Oh sure, I'm not angry and I'm going to demand that things be expanded since what we do have was done on the free time of the people involved. Just saying it was a little bit of a letdown that in some areas, flying still means having to go the long way around a zone rather than being able to go more directly from Point A to Point B. Still an improvement I'm glad we have even in its current form.
The ARR areas were never intended to be flying zones - that's why flying wasn't unlocked until HW (with massive areas that were so inconvenient for land travel, you *had* to fly :/ ).
If it makes anyone feel better, just think of it as lore-building: HW has higher flying heights, but also tons of aether currents you have to attune to before you can fly in an area; ARR doesn't have any aether currents you have to attune to, so mounts can't fly as high in those areas :)
It still doesn't make me less miffed that SE added the flying right after the Ultima Weapon quest, instead of at least waiting until it's introduced in the beginning of HW...
When I first logged in for 5.3 I immediately went to the Central Shroud to fly around, and oh my god it was more thrilling than when I unlocked flying back in Heavensward.
It's so fun to zip around Costa Del Sol and see what the birds look like up close and land on those raised bridges that we couldn't reach before.
It's great zipping around Mor Dhona and getting a better look at the devastation.
Sure, I wish we could fly around in the Floating City of Nym, but all in all I'm having fun.
Not to mention the functionality is super appreciated.
Flying in ARR, just made me miss the days I use to go out of bounds to explore the hidden lands. I actually could go further out in foot when out of bounds than we can flying. Some maps are massive, but locked behind invisible walls. So sad we can’t go further out. Fun thing I did find was the Gold Saucer in Southern Thanalan. It’s west of the southern Aetheryte. It peaks out behind some mountains.
I would guess that by 5.5, or 6.0, the entire zones will be revamped so it's not just OOB unlocker. Because above W. Thanalan is the worst in showing the areas were never meant for flying. Waterfalls from nowhere, music fading out, and the swamp bog lighting going in and out. I hope to see those areas given better form.
I really liked going under East Shroud more than above it. It also makes a huge difference to clip through and see the sights on foot versus flying and being unable to land. I really wanted to try to get to the top of the crystal in Eastern La Noscea because I never could pull off the OOB glitch which oddly enough only seemed to work with male models? Tried it with different people of different races and for some wacky reason, only the men could slip through.
I don't know why I'm surprised, yet I am, that people are complaining about the constraints of flight in zones we were never intended to fly in in the first place. Just be happy for once people.....
It just proves my theory that everything is on a holodeck. :D
I was actually expecting less. There are actually a few new places to explore, very few. But for the most part like I said when it was announce, most of what you couldn't reach before are places you can't even land, which is what you should expect with how flying is in zone designed for flight. It's just how they do things. I'm not complaining I'm just not impressed and underwhelmed. They might have bigger plans in the future but they haven't really said that. This doesn't really "open the door". Turning on flight is the easy part. Redesigning the maps is the hard part and they had to do a lot of that for this. I don't think they want to do it again very soon. I'm not saying I want more, I'm just saying why bother?
A lot of you aren't happy with anything are you?
I've found a few points of interest when I started flying:
Souther Than. You can see the Gold Saucer far clearer now, even better looking at night.
Cortheas Central there's a patch of snow you can land on at the South West right by the tower (look for the rocky arch) where you get a better view of the frozen Castrum further West.
Mor Dhona, lots of little nooks you can land in at the town square that were accessible to Out of Bounders.
I like that I can just fly to where I needed to be, and consider with Yokai coming out, traveling to fates will be even faster than before.
It's like being given a birthday cake that isn't sweet. It's got icing and candles, but tastes like white bread. It's nice, yes. But people are listing improvements on something that gave better results with just OOB glitching. And it can't be too hard to code in "make this thing solid and raise ceiling five feet." Because the ability to land and go there is there. You can look up OOB videos to see for yourself.

Look at this. We cannot fly here.
I want to fly here.
We are literally flying in out of bounds areas. Go to Horizon, fly to Cape Westwind. You will see how very much not meant to be seen by players it all is. And if we can see rocks spewing waterfalls like it's a whole river above us, then we should be able to fly atop a crystal.
This isn't like swimming in Costa where the entire ocean was revamped to accommodate. This was just flipping the unlock switch.
You think I'm upset, I'm just very much wanting. Having something left to be desired is not complete disappointment. If you don't think it's important, that's on you and it's not the point I'm trying to get across. It's more options and something the many people who checked out that OOB location would like to see. More to it for some, but that's as simple as I can get it across.
Yeah the new sky barrier for the ARR zones is disgustingly low, don't get me wrong we don't need to be able to fly to space but it could stand to be higher.
I want to re-examine my earlier statement. I really don't want the devs to take the criticism as a negative. I love flying in ARR, and they did an amazing job in all of the zones.
The only gripe, and it's a small gripe, is the low ceiling for flying in some of the areas. Again, it's a small gripe and it's still plenty of room.
However, if they have time/money to redone some of it-it would be nice if they could raise the flying ceiling a little bit more.
In its totality they did an amazing job, this is the message I want the community managers to pass to them. I have incredible respect for the environment 3D artists of this game, they are the real MVPs of this game in my opinion. Thank you for all this amazing work.
I think what they want is to have more of an explorable area when flying. I’ve been out of bounds in many of ARR areas and the maps are massive. We would like to visit certain areas we use to and be able to walk around it, too. For example, you see the mountains in the far background in the North Shroud to the north, you could’ve easily walked right to those mountains and they were far. I was able walk far to the right that I was off the literal map you open. After awhile you would get stuck, but the journey exploring the terrain was fun. Also, flying is fine, it just reminds some of us of the cool areas we use to go and explore back in the day.
Here is a picture of me making it right next to the base of the Crystal Tower in Mor Dhona

Idk, I think it might be still fun to keep those OOB zones for the players that enjoy finding them. For most of us, that's not really on our radar. But for explorer types, that can be some rather satisfying moments. So, while it might be nice flying all around out there, maybe it might be better to let you all keep your own secret special places.
My only complaint is that everywhere I try to go fly around to explore, I keep getting foggy weather or thunderstorms so I can't see anything.
