Ten characters of no.
Unlikely. Chances are they're wrapping up the story of the Ascians and Zodiark with the next expansion, but after that there are other continents and threats to worry about. We still haven't been to Meracydia after all to say nothing of Sharlayan. Or even the other shards. When one story ends, another begins. :)
FFXIV is one of their major ip's bringen in money (and the amount of whales waving their visa cards at the mogstation).
Anyway, it doesn't make much sense that they would just stop FF XIV development when it's still bringing in this much cash. They could however announce a new MMO and stop developing for the current one but I think it's very unlikely since again making a new MMO is a huge investment and they can still make cheaper expansions for the current one.
FFXI is nearly 20 years old and they're *still* adding new story content. I think we can safely say that FFXIV's going to keep going.
I think in a past interview they said we're like 70% done with the Hydaelyn/Zodiark story. I'd say either the last or second to last then it goes into maint mode
I kind of hope the tease at the end of 5.3 gets wrapped up in 5.4 and 5.5 and they do a totally new story with new villains for 6.0. I would like to see some new bad guys and storylines.
The way it was worded in japanese makes it sound more like the last story about the star itself, not the last story ON the star.
AKA closing the Ascian saga.
I have a feeling this next expansion is going to be very big.
The game isn't ending anytime soon, according to Yoshi-P. It's just the Ascian, Hydaelyn and Zodiark story that is coming to a close.
There's still a lot of territory to explore within the Source alone, let alone the potential if we go to visit another world.
Early MSQ spodles
Better not be the end of the story since they teased new classes. Imagine waiting since heavensward for a new healer and then only getting two years with apothicary
Come 5.4 Zenos gonna be like: "You couldn't find any worthwhile adventure's on another star, where did it bring you? Back to me!"
I am wondering if those new classes could possibly be:
Necromancer & Berserker (melee Warrior type)?
My concern is the possibility of Xenos being the main protagonist in 6.0. Ugh.
I don't know about FF XIV as a whole, but the Shadowbringers storyline definitely seems like it's pretty much getting closed...
Story wise, we're kind of done being the Warrior of Darkness, and don't for the purposes of the MSQ have any reason to go back to the First for some time... The only open story lines currently out there in the First to finish are Eden and the Nier storylines, which both are sidequests...
MSQ is back to business as usual as the Warrior of Light, fighting the Garlean Empire. Which honestly could easily involve a full new expansion where we go to Garlemald.
Nah, from the beginning it has all about the "tale of this star". Where one story ends, another begins. I sincerely doubt that the next expansion will be the last. As long as the game remains popular and makes them money, they aren't going to send it into maintenance mode. I have a feeling that the end of the Ascian storyline is just the beginning. With WoW, at least from the beginning, it was all about the lead up to Arthas. 2 expansions later, he was dead. That didn't stop Blizzard from making more expansions since there is so much more that they could do. If WoW can do it, FF XIV can.
That definitely wouldn't be the way they announce when the game is shutting down; especially not this far in advance. Once you announce that an MMO is shutting down people start immediately abandoning ship. There's no way SE would do that before the next expansions releases; it would kill sales.
Like people have said, it likely just means we're wrapping up this part of the story.
There have been 5 patches in each expansion so far. Patch 4 usually starts the lead in to the next expansion. The wording could mean anything though.
We still have some raids left to do on the 1st shard which should be in Patch 5.4.
I hope we kill Zenos in 5.5. Don't want to see him as the main villain again in a whole expansion
Since I have to have some words not hidden, my reply is all spoiler territory.
Also apothecary, Ink Mage, there were a few hinted at WoL classes in this portion of the MSQ, not to mention Geomancer which has been teased forever. My hope is a Hammer using combat class, if they had a hammer combat class heals, tank, or DPS I would be making a Lala alt for it. Because Dwarf RP is awesome.
Off topic but we have fought zenos like 5 times already not counting memories or apparitions. Im sick of him he better get killed. Varis only fight was far more exciting and would've been a amazing villain far more complex than "I i wanna fight cuz im bored" and yet another token charismatic ascian...but well see where this goes
They mean the end of the ascians and very likely Zeno.
I really wanna like zeno and I kinda do a bit, he looks badass and has a great anime villain voice, but kinda want a new rival villain.
Idk...ever since SB...I know we need someone as strong as us but I feel zeno doesn't get enough screen time for me to really like him.
He's just strong for the sake of being our equal somehow.
And when he does appear on screen he hardly says or does anything and just sits there smirking.
I know they're going for a badass approach with him and it works to make him seem cool but...idk.
I just have big mixed feelings.
I guess I just don't like the wanna fight just for the sake of fighting type of villain.
I'm still holding out some hope that Zenos gets straight-up killed by the next main antagonist, to show how powerful the new baddy is. Ideally before he ever comes face-to-face with the WoL again.
I would be a bit disappointed if we didn't fight Zodiark as our actual endboss.
That might be, however, they started setting up this stuff BEFORE Shadowbringers.
They only started really setting up the Shadowbringers plotline as people started getting their souls summoned into the First at the very end of Stormblood... Like it was some kind of side story...
“The Final Chapter of this Star” probably just mean the end of this whole garlemald x eorzea conflict thingy, its not the end of the game.
at least if the game still has a lot of active playerbase iam sure SE will keep the game alive with new saga and such. i mean we maybe WOL but we are adventurer at heart in the story so we can always go to new continent / new planet / new dimension and voila a new chapter.
Same honestly, if only because I very much feel like there's plenty of other villains to chose from for 6.0. We still don't know the source of the noise that caused Terminus to begin back in Amaurot and Zodiark themselves is still out there. If Zenos ends up mantling Zodiark as some plotlines have been hinting towards I'm going to be rather checked out of the story. The only way to really salvage Zenos for me at this point is if they rejoin his soul enough to make him a more interesting character or a new person entirely.
I think "this Star" possibly refers to the ascian quest to make the Source whole. While the unsundered ascians are no more, there are still other ascians around meddling in the affairs of mortals (which is made very clear at the end) so I suppose taking care of that would be the final chapter of the ascian arc. And/or taking care of Zenos, who is a product of ascian schemes, would be part of that as well.
The end?
After Elidibus did...
... steal alot of WoL souls from another shards, I think there is enough to do in the future.
Everybody keeps saying we will get to Zeno in 5.4-5.5. I think your speculations are wrong. Since 6.0 will obviously take place into Garlemald it's safe to assume we apprehend Zeno in 6.0 as the Final boss like Emetch-Selch (Hades) in ShB. "Zeno" killed the king and is taking reign in garlemald. I highly doubt we will see much of him in the coming patch let alone fight him.
