Magical Damage Indicators

Coming from playing other games, I find it bizzare that there is no way of telling what is a magical or physical attack. On my job I have a cooldown for magical attacks, but I don't know what will be a magical attack.

I can't understand the logic of checking my in game logs during a dungeon run to see, or god forbid actually downloading a third party tool and look through a pletora of information just to see what was magical damage. To me that is borderline ridiculous. Why do SE not just change the colour of magical attacks to purple in the name and cast bar of an ability and leave it as that.

Why would I be there guessing what ability to is going to be magic? If you see an animation starting, you may think it's going to magical but it isn't. I wan't to have the relevent information during the fight so I cna best react to it. This only seems fair and would be good design. I don't think its any good to just tell players, just get hit by whatever ability and see if it was magic or not.

Tbh I find there is a severe lack of information here, which can be worked around, but does hurt the experience a bit. It doesn't make you a better player because you looked at ACT after a dungeon run, or guessed what was a magical hit before it hit you. It's a thing where we SHOULD have indicators, so we can react to what is in front of us.

This is my take anyway. I hope my point is clear anyway, and that I don't upset anyone with my opinion.

Nearly all AOE dmg is magical.

Also, indicators for it are quite useless because you shouldn't stand into the aoe fields anyway.

There is also no real need to mitigate aoes in you normal dungeon or alliance raid. Just active it when there is a stackmark or any other aoe.

Just for savage/ ultimates you have to know what kind of dmg the boss does, to plan the mitigation with your group.

"you dont need to mitigate it" isnt the argument you think it is. and indeed its relevant when doing savage and ultimates and most likely why theyre asking this in the first place


i agree with OP, trying to guess what is and what isnt phys and magic is annoying, especially when you want to plan uses of feint and addle and other stuff.

I was given the advice that everything where the boss actually hits you is physical back in Heavensward. And then there's Titan where almost everything is magical...

Auto attacks and tankbusters are generally physical (Ramuh being the oddball with magical auto attacks) and all types of aoe generally magical.
You have a few exceptions here and there but that's a rule you can go with.

And I highly appreciate that you want to use mitigation regardless of content. It may not be neccessary outside savage/ ultimate but it still helps. I love seeing a Heart of Light on stack marks, Shield Samba in big pulls, Feint on tankbusters etc. regardless of content. Trying to use all your skills even if the difference they make is neither big nor neccessary is a great attitude.

They should make the cast bar purple or something if its a magical attack, theyve already shown they can mess with what the cast bar looks like with the interrupt indicators they added in shb.

Yeah. The game is playable without it, but it would be a decent QoL if cast bars were color coded to phys or magic damage

It'd be nice I guess. Definitely require less trial and error. As of now, the way you figure it out is basically try eating it without your mitigator, and then eat it with. Note the damage difference. That or, if you parry it, it's physical, if you never parry it, it's not.

All in all though, with how they've moved away from damage types in general, it wouldn't surprise me if they stop differentiating between magical or physical all at some point in the future.

It would be a time waste and will confuse many new player.

The type of player who really need to know that information, will figure it out by themselves while progging the ultimates.

For every one else is 99% of the time: Aoe cast = magical dmg.

What would having this information do for you?
I think only one job would care (DRK) so I'm not sure it'd be worth it.
And as a DRK understand what is and isn't magic damage isn't that hard (and honestly not that important outside of ultimate and week 1 Savage prog).

I presume its meant to ensure that if Feint/Addle are used, then it would be used to their highest potential, as opposed to being wasted on something that is the opposite type of damage (orc merging the two into one single ability would also get the job done and would be more in line with recent changes)

If an attack is energy based, it's magic, like 95% of the time. If it's a raid wife aoe or a stack marker, 95% it's a magic aoe. Most tank busters are slams, smashes, stabs, body slams and are physical

Good point.
I forget about addle.

Addle, Feint, Heart of Light, Dark Missionary, Dark Mind, Fey Illumination and to a certain extend Camouflage are all skills that only work on one of the two damage types and having to guess what is what or needing outside sources is rather annoying, combine that with the atrocious combat log this game has and it becomes an exercise in frustration to figure out if your mitigation is actually even doing anything.
