Ranks Beyond Level Cap

Can we have a implement of levels beyond cap. For example we reach the current level cap of 80 after level 80 we could have a mastery rank that would allow us to continue to see some sort of progress as we continue to play with our level 80 characters.

As we progress to new ranks last 80 maybe we could unlock unique glamor items that are only accessible with a certain mastery rank. Perhaps even a special mount or emote. Maybe even a passive ability that increases stats slightly or running speed slightly. Perhaps a unique store opens up that sells unique items. Maybe with each mastery rank we unlock we receive a rare coin that can only be traded for one item out of X amount of items available. Giving the players that one chance to pick only one unique item per character. Maybe only one coin can only be obtained per account. The new ranks could give players a new symbol next to their names along with a title. The unique symbol next to the players name could be a rank like we have for the Grand Company except this would represent the Mastery level.

The new ranks could take longer to achieve than a regular level perhaps 10 times as much as it would take us to level from 79-80.

As a new expansion comes out the mastery ranks get reset or paused until they reach the next level cap. Maybe the ranks we achieved get turned into a slight experience boost or coins to spend at the unique Mastery shop.

I think that would give us some sort a goal to shoot for after we level to 80. To make it easier the Mastery levels should be universal to each class as long as you play with a level 80 character the experience for the Mastery level goes up.

Such a system is currently pointless as the level cap is raised by ten levels when a new expansion launches which happens every two years or so. This is different to how things were back in the heyday of FFXI when the level cap was frozen at 75 for something like ten years so a means of boosting stats etc beyond that (aka, the merit points system) really was necessary.

Gear item level technically already satisfies this anyway (new gear with a raised item level cap is always being added nearly every month or two), so at the moment there is absolutely no reason to introduce a stat-boosting function beyond level cap, as the level cap will end up being raised in another twelve months or so anyway (the next expansion will probably be released sometime mid next year if SE's usual timeline is followed), thus making it completely redundant.

MMOs don't handle endless player progress well, even if it's a secondary leveling system. Players also get very upset with systems where their progress gets reset and they feel like the game is taking things away from them that they had earned.

Level caps serve to give new players time to catch up to veteran players. Any sort of secondary leveling system that's only available after achieving level cap would effectively become the new level cap and be seen as mandatory by players, especially if rewards offered any sort of game advantage no matter how minor. It would become another tool players use to discriminate against others.

As for rewards that don't offer a game advantage, we've already got plenty of those to farm. They serve just fine as goals to shoot for once we reach level cap. No need to create a secondary leveling system to give those rewards when they can be added to existing content or other content planned for release.

Honestly, it's better to have a hard stop for progress than an endless system that makes players feel like they aren't allowed a break from the game. That leads to stress and burn out.

What do we get for playing as a max level character? Tomes, how many times have those reset? How many times have we tossed out our gear? How many years have we played collecting and resetting Tomes? How is my idea bad and what we have now any different? At least as we mindlessly grind and rest the Tomes we could add a passive grind that doesn’t reset. We won’t even notice while we play with our max level characters.
This idea doesn’t have to be part of the daily grind. People are going to grind for Tomes, Extreme /Savage content anyways. How many times do people do that week after week. Why not add a extra reward for playing as a max character?

What if the progress never reset, but instead paused until the player reached the next level cap. Like I said before even if it reset the points levels that reset could be turned into currency to spend at the secret shop. A win win for the player either way. It isn’t meant to be punishing just more game play added to our max level characters.

This game is designed not to be played 24/7. It is designed to be played, then you take a break if you can/want to. It is designed so that people can jump into it easily and not be intimidated by a system like you would suggest is so massive that it would turn off people because they would feel that they "have to" be playing the game continually.

You don’t even know me. Why assume anything about me. Why even bring this up in the conversation? How is questioning my life choices benefit this conversation? Do you do this to every post you go to and tell people this? Maybe you should take a look at yourself first.

I agree with you in the system that allows players not to be intimidated. That’s what I’m purposing a system when max level players can gain extra credit for special loot by just playing. Do your savage content, do your daily Tome grind. Of course it doesn’t have to be exactly how I say it has to be. The Devs can tweet it to their design.

Look at PVP ranking and it’s rewards. Its limited and forcing players to participate in a limited time content. Not everyone can obtain them which is sad. Look at Tomes and even achievements with their long time commitment requirements. All I’m asking is give us something that adds along side of grinding for weekly Tomes. I played with my max character so much grinding Tomes and clearing new story/Extreme dungeons that by now I would of had some extra Mastery points added along side by just playing.

Another example is the Relic weapons. Look how long that takes especially Stormbloods weapon. You have to grind a whole new level. Now imagine while you were grinding this whole new level in the Stormblood relic quest. Unknown to you, you we’re gaining another rank by just playing as with your level 80 class.

Remember all those light farms we’ve been doing for relic quests, by just playing the game. Now imagine a rank that progresses by just playing the game. One that rewards you with a little extra for the time you spent. Doesn’t have to be hard the Devs could make it easier.

The rank system beyond level cap, it progresses as you play with your max character. It add points to whatever you do crafting, gathering or fighting. it doesn’t have to be limited time. It can itself have a Cap for example that can be finished by doing 1 or more dungeons. Just an example.

Just want to add just like everything in game it’s optional. The relic, Tomes PVP ranking, Savage/Extreme/side quest, achievements and much more. Don’t see you against any of those things. How is my idea any different? How come you’re not fighting the good fight against those things like you’re against my idea that is basically the same things, weak after week.

because asking for these things is pointless. you're just asking for extra busywork. *optional* you say. anything in this game that would provide any kind of benefit is never *optional*.

Nope, it is good that a level cap is a cap - that makes it so much easier for us more casual players to catch up without stressing.

Why assume it’s meant for hardcore gamers? I can also speak on behalf of people based on what I hear and see. There are a lot of max leveled players. Most have nothing to do. If I’m correct there was a post a moment ago about one player bored asking when the next patch will come out. You see players want something to do why do you assume they do not. Is this place not a place for ideas?

It’s not meant to be a grind. By the time the next expansion hits people would be capped. Say it only went up 5 levels. That five levels take as long as getting the first 2000 of the current new Tomes.

It could be easy as running one dungeon and you make the new Mastery cap. Why deny it and assume it’s hard. Why not contributed to the conversation and help improve the idea instead of going post to post and being negative all the time. You might realize yourself.

Then why are you here? If you’re not helping contribute to the idea and help it grow why continue to be here? Do you do this everywhere you go? Is this place not a place for ideas. To help the game grow.

Everything we do in this game is busy work that’s what a game is. If you don’t like it why do you do it then? Why continue to play? There are a lot of players bored wanting more to do. Most of these patches are cleared within hours or weeks. Players crave more. What would you know?

Everything in this game provides some sort of benefit. What are you talking about? Are you really this negative all the time? Look at the limited content that’s coming out with Shiva. Why are you up and arms about that?

players will always consume content faster than can be produced. this is why you do other things when you have finished consuming what you have been doing. if you can only play one game or choose to only play one game that's a pretty sad existence.

just because I don't agree with someone's opinion that does not equal it being negative.

throwing out ideas is fine but be prepared to receive criticism on those ideas. if you cannot handle that then you have a fragile ego.

I see it more as a on going debate. Breaking comments down asking why they think as such is interesting. I enjoy knowing someone’s thought process. Then again this is already getting off topic.

No I don’t represent anyone hence my point. How can we assume what people will like or hate?

The new ranking statement after level cap is meant for casuals. It isn’t meant to be punishing. A player isn’t forced to finish it. They gain it by just playing. Same way we do Tomes and relics. Meant to take time and there’s no time limit. You just get rewarded some extra content for you playing. It gives options for people who may or may not be sick of dungeons dailies. More options is always nice especially when you have down time and don’t want to do daily dungeon grind. There are times I don’t want to run dungeons . Knowing I’m making some other progress by just playing is a rewarding feeling.

We have content after content that dies upon release. With the Mastery ranks it comes with just playing game. You don’t need to depend on people. It’s solo friendly, a personal achievement like the many time consuming achievements we already have. It’s literally no different.m than the mentor, fates or PVP achievements. No different than Tomes too.

Personally I'm not a fan of long term ambiguous grinds. With a system like this I would either feel somewhat forced to play a max level job at all times, like any time I spent leveling another job would be time wasted (especially if the rewards increase your power somehow), or I could choose to not care in which case it may as well not exist. When you put content in a game you want people to care about it, that's why it's there, and if they care about this it feels imposing and limits their freedom to do whatever they want because it never ends.

I don't find this kind of thing rewarding either because you don't have a clear path or goal, you just get a bonus sometimes. You don't really earn anything with a system like this you just derp around for a while until oh hey free stuff, cool I guess, whatever. A better sense of reward comes from effort.

Besides if it's tied to exp, roulettes and dungeons are probably the best way to go anyway so I'm not sure what this would accomplish that additional ways to spend tomes would not, and it certainly wouldn't help if you're bored of them. What else would you do to increase your rank, fates? Hunts? Beast tribe dailies? Crafting and gathering? They have their own rewards. Side quests? They give garbage exp. (I would like to see a better reason to do side quests though.)

You could also look at gil as a similar system to this already - you get it from just about everything and can buy all kinds of stuff with it, even a house. Why would we need something new that fills a similar role? The only thing unique this new system would bring is an arbitrary number denoting your rank - any of the rewards could be obtained by other means.

Finally there is a lot to be said for being able to finish something, as others have said here already.

Does FFXIV need a system like this? Definitely not, there's plenty to do with more being added all the time, and plenty of rewards to go with them. Would it benefit from it? I think it would actually be more harmful than good.

It feels a bit redundant to me personally. Anything that's part of this prestige level grind could be awarded somewhere else in some other way. And there are plenty of grinds to tackle in the game. Stuff from relic weapons, to pvp, to tank mounts.

There's nothing inherently wrong with the suggestion I'll add, it would be perfectly fine if they added an extra progression bar that unlocks at 80 and gives cosmetic stuff for grinding I guess. But at the same time they could equally just put that stuff in other areas and it would functionally be the same.

They could add this prestige level along side our daily dungeons Tomes runs? We clear those weekly to upgrade our gear anyways to progress. So it wouldn’t be too much of a burden if the progress is made in the background. It would definitely be for cosmetic purpose. Perhaps the reward would be a visual color change to some of our attacks? More customization would be a plus.

Perhaps this ranking system can be added to side quests. We already have one for Fates which is nice. Adding a ranking system to the side quests along with the experience and Gil could maybe open up a whole system. Where progressing through the side quest, helping people, shapes the world around us. Maybe secret areas open up or new shops open up.

It could, like an additional reputation thing similar to beast tribes, or they could be lumped in with Fates. I kinda get the feeling SE doesn't want them to be rewarding though to encourage people to do more group content. :/ But boosting the exp on those and replacing that exp with gemstones or something at max lvl would be nice.

Definitely that and maybe add a completion bar for the map that gives us a reward. Perhaps the reward could be the current local gear. The current fairy glamor we got at the Mogstation could’ve been a reward for finishing all the quests in the fairy area. Doesn’t have to be that extreme. The wings could’ve been enough of a reward. Anything other is better than the small amount of experience points and Gil those quests give.

My sub ran out and I took a break.

I did play GW2 but haven’t logged in for years now. I enjoyed all their world explorations and activities.
The visual presentation is perfect. Exploring and doing Fate like events are fun. The whole world was a battlefield and the visuals represented it well. I started multiple new characters because it was so much fun to start over. The combat hooked me and the world made me want to explore more. The story was perfect too. Even though they used the same voice actors for every conversation I appreciated hearing the characters talk.

Can we get ranks beyond level cap like in zadnor but instead of it being tied to character power it would be just for rewards. It could reset with each expansion. Maybe have a cap like in zadnor. Perhaps increase the amount of rank points we get based on how many new people we help in raid finder clear for the first time. No party finder allowed. This would help a lot of new people not have to rush to clear new content. Since after patch release, raid finder dies quick.

This will give people something to work for when. Like the relic weapon we have to wait for mid expansion.

Let me go dig up a comment I made on reddit a couple weeks back

Ok here it is. So basically, we'd hit 100 and reach our max level, as dictated by tradition from previous FF games. So we need a new way to 'level', but not with 'levels'. While the execution was debatable (Maw of Souls spam...) I really liked the 'idea' of the artifact weapons from Legion, over in WOW. The idea of building a talent tree, of having choice over your level up reward skill/traits, at a time when they had 'choose one of these 3 choices' once per 15 levels, was cool. And the tree was shaped in the outline of the weapon was a nice touch.

So I was thinking, why not have something like that, but instead of us empowering a weapon, we're 'writing our own memories' in the Soul Crystal, having learned everything it has to offer us? For example, I knocked together a DRG themed one. Note, that while you can choose which way through the tree you go, you'd have 10 points to spend, for the 10 'levels' you earn as you go through the expansion. Thus, while you might have differences between two DRGs who are still levelling, due to them making different choices of pathing, at max level you'd have the full tree filled out. There would be no 'you haven't taken the X talent? stop griefing, kick from party'.

It's an ok idea. The people who write on the forums the most will always shoot down people's suggestions and explain why ffxiv should stay the way it has always been. This is the usual response here.

I already play a game with an infinite exp system. PSO2 converts any levels beyond the current cap into ex-cubes which you can spend on items or enhancements. It doesn't force people to play more because there's no reason to grind out huge amounts of cubes, it's just nice to have something in exchange for what would otherwise be wasted exp.

Yes, they could add anything anywhere to just be an extra grind points that you get along with just playing normally. Dungeons could maybe have their own ranks as you play. Giving you a unique minion, stat or golden weapon for that dungeon. It would give players more to do while grinding tomes. I’m sure many players reached the 1000 or 10,000 dungeon achievement. By then they could’ve had their dungeon ranks maxed out by just playing.

I agree. I think the system as it is is pretty much okay. Level cap, grind for item level until level cap increases. It's not super simple, but it's simple enough.


I guess the waste of exp is proposital though. When you level up everything and don't need the exp, they want you to do things for other reasons than leveling up.
