The issues with Skybuilder Rankings

Making a big edit here because reading through the posts, I see the same conversation about self-control coming up when it comes to player health, and I guess that didn't cross my mind. I'll leave the section about bots as it is, but when it comes to player health I totally agree with you all, self-control is probably the most important thing to have when it comes to content like this, knowing when to say enough and take a step back isn't something the dev team can do for you. Someone brought up a really good point of this being the same behaviour that would show in any other content, and that this is just more obvious because of the ranking system. I still believe changes need to be made to the way Gatherer skybuilder points are granted for those with less time on their hands, but I think the issue of player health goes far beyond Ishgard Restoration. Thank you for showing me this ^^


Botting and account sharing:

There's two sides to this. First off, any kind of cheating-- including account sharing should be punished. Gaining a cheap advantage over the ones who put in their time and dedication is wrong, I don't think anyone would disagree with that, other than those who actively do it. But, some of the things I've seen said by the community have been hurtful, I have seen accusations towards others with high scores and I have read just some of the most disheartening things. I love this game, I love the community-- there is nothing wrong with wanting to make sure bots are punished, but please keep in mind that the account owner has likely earned that score without any methods of cheating. Let's be kind to each other.

On the other hand, I can't really blame the community, as again this is an error on the dev team's part. This system is built in a way that openly invites that kind of speculation and behaviour. This really needs to change in the next season-- but with the current gathering mechanics, I'm unsure how they could make it a skill test rather than endurance.

Sorry for my initial post, I think my concern got the better of me and I didn't entirely understand the situation myself.

Why does peoples health keep coming up? They have the intelligence to operate a computer and play this game. They should know not to damage their health.


People attacking you since you are first report and move on. They deserve what they get for being bent out of shape.

I understand what you mean and I don't disagree with you, but it's like how it is with housing, people will spend days at their computer for a chance at a house and sadly people will put their basic needs second to that. I just don't believe anything should be designed around the question of: "How long can you keep this up for?"

Because SE is very slow to deal with bots and competing with them for long durations is bad for your health.

If you trust the OP he said he wasn't botting and he is first. I would like any rewards to held for a month and SE review everyone who placed for bots. But that is too much to wish for.

The souls of those who died no-lifing so much because they didn't drink enough fluids, ate poorly or not enough, lack of sleep or no sleep, would like to talk to you. If you want something bad enough and self control is not a strong point, you will fall.

Never said OP did any botting. It's not like this event is planned as a one time thing so future people would still have to compete with others using bots in varies ways, directly or indirectly.

I doubt SE will and SE does need to deal with bots and botting better in general.

Yeah, this is why I’m not trying to go for any rank or anything.
My long grinding in Eureka when it came out revealed that, my legs have circulation issues, and I was getting blood spots on my ankles from capillaries bursting from sitting too long.
My circulation issues aren’t from any particular health issues, I’m not overweight, far from it, and I asked my doctor about it, and he said some people are just born more prone to it. I honestly cannot no-life as much as I’d want to. I’d be too at risk of blood clots.

Look after your health first, guys! No titles or gear is worth damaging your body over.

This general concept applies to a real world job too though. So you can't judge people too heavily for having their priorities skewed. We can at least say this is a game, there aren't many choices in real life.

the ranking system need work, but irs actually very small amount of people in the ranking who have no life, i dont know about gatherer but atm if you can make an expert recipe you can make it to the leader board with 1 hour work of crafting which if perfectly available even if you have job and take care of your health, so please try not to jugde people just because they rank in high... most of them have job and a life

i said this because i know some top ranker

also people who screw their health and job over this ranking is probably already screwed up before this ranking come up anyway...

If only there was some sort of automatic system in place that could limit the amount of time that people are allowed to access a game, to force them to log out and prevent them from playing themselves sick... oh wait. There is. It's called "Parental Controls" because the only people who shouldn't be 100% capable of prioritizing their well-being over a video game are children who have not yet matured enough to be responsible for themselves.

Any adult who is incapable of doing this on their own has much bigger issues that need to be addressed and should probably see a professional.

i think they should limit the item you can turn in per day, maybe 20 or 30, yes several people will get the 1st ranking but be real, how many people atm that max 20 or so expert recipe per day? that alone net 30k point which not many people did atm anyway and people who did that is already in top 12, only the top3 actually over done stuff...

Funny that limiting amount of play. They did that in 1.0 and were crucified for it. If you played way too long you had diminishing returns. They even had fancy pictures to show why and how it worked.

I've been doing 30-40 expert crafts a day, personally.

Might grind them out for a whole day or two depending on badly I tank by the end of today.

It kind of depends on your leaderboard, some are full of people who do 30-40+ crafts a day and others might have a pretty low score for top 12

Though honestly, if you can expert craft consistently, you can get into top 12

we should also take gil away from rich people and give it to casual players who play maybe 30 minutes daily.

There is no difference here compared to any other aspect of the game. The no-lifers will generally attain things first, with everyone else catching up to them.
Crafting has never been an exception to this, but I think the scoreboard coming back after about 8 years has shown some people may not have realized it since they'll only do things when attention is brought to it.

Guess I'm in a bad datacenter for this. Got people doing up to 350K per day on DoH which is so far beyond extreme or what you could imagine being possible even if able to maintain intense focus on zero sleep. That guy got 500K in multi classes already.

I picked the worst class to try, with a dozen people now pulling 50K-200K daily making it a very competitive "no life" to get the Top 12 achievement / title. I keep considering dropping out or switching to a less competitive class this late because it is possible I could push my limits getting up really early each morning to fit more repetitious synths in and still not get a good rank.

On a healthier datacenter a fraction of these scores would be good enough for top 12. So yeah depending where you are this is a very draining competition both physically and mentally. Basically who can play the game the longest over a long 10-day period. 5 days would be better.

To be fair, that's pretty much every MMO ever with just about any content and RNG. Obviously some take it way too far though, but there's always going to be those people. Unfortunately, they cause themselves problems that they alone can stop from happening to begin with. I do realize that some do not have that level of self control, but that isn't the vast majority of MMO players. Most players know when enough is enough.

Good thing all people are fighting for are a few lame titles. If that's enough to jeopardize your health, I dunno what to tell you.
