Mount information confusing and unhelpful

After I reached level 20 seeing no information about obtaining a mount I purchased one from MOG station, there was no warning I would not be able to use the mount or how I would get the ability to use the mount I bought. After joining a main company about level 23 there was still not a clue, messaging in Uldah general chat only got one response from a guy who thought it had to do with the main company... I finally found a 'commander' with a common blue bubble that gave me the quest, but I was level 27 before the game sent me to see him about another quest. At any rate I was walking several levels with a mount I had paid for from MOG station that I couldn't use, but could have if I'd have known about the quest, trying to figure out the main story I don't click on extra quests often. There should be a 'chat' setting to reach a 'mentor' as I understand there are those guys who help, never seen one though.

You can't use ANY mounts, even ones you already 'know' until you obtain a chocobo through the main story. When the MSQ has you a join a Grand Company you'll be able to get a chocobo license. That will give you a chocobo mount, and also unlock all the other mounts you may already have.

It doesn't lead you into it, but if I remember correctly once you've joined your chosen Grand Company you can purchase a chocobo license with the company seals you earn via doing levequests, certain duties, etc. from the Quartermaster NPC.

I dont know which mount you did buy but actually there is a little warning before you buy it.

Mentors are those guys with the crown next to their name. Aks one of them to invite you to the novice chat, there they should be able to answer those questions immediately in-game.

Done this with an Alt lately. You don't even need to farm the seals, the joining quest gives you the exact amount needed for the Chocobo.

The quest for a chocobo is not MSQ; it's a side quest available after the MSQ forces you to join a GC. At your GC headquarters, pick up the quest "My Little Chocobo" (Lv20).

I believe the game also tells you right at the beginning 'tutorial' section in your starter city, after you speak to Baderon/Momodi/Miounne that the big shiny blue quests are also important alongside the MSQ quests and unlock important stuff. The quest to unlock your chocobo literally pops right next to you as soon as you join your Grand Company

Yeah, they lowered the price on the mount license awhile ago. It used to be advised that the first thing you did with your GC membership was some fates or GC hunting logs to get the thousands of seals a mount unlock cost.

Hey xdandeman. Sorry you had to experience that!

I also missed/forgot the memo about unlocking additional game content via the "blue/+ sign" quests, and had to go back through areas I already explored to pick a bunch up. Those quests unlock additional game content that ranges from treasure hunting (I think) to new optional dungeons. Always be sure to pick them up alongside the MSQ so you don't miss out on anything.

I learned this after I hit 50. Now I make sure to clear any blue quest givers before I leave a zone. Unlocks classes, dungeons, raids and flying.

Yes, treasure hunts were unlocked via a blue quest(i think one that started at wineport). So was the casino, the sightseeing log, the challenge log, dozens of optional dungeons(starting as low as level 20), 7 sets of optional raids, 5 sets of hard optional raids, harder versions of some trials, the glamour system, using color dyes on your gear, the deep dungeons, eureka, the hildi questline, a dozen or more extra emotes, 13 and counting beast tribe factions, and honestly im sure theres more that arent immediately coming to mind.
