Chocobo Color issue

So for what ever reason i am having massive issues trying t change my chocobo color in game. im trying to get soot black but when i follow the color calculator i get kobold brown. then i will adjust the calculator to go from kobold brown to soot black and follow it i get ink blue. does anyone know the exact fruits i need to change the color to black or can at least tell me what i am doing wrong?

I assume I know what website you are using, are you expanding the list at the bottom that shows what order to feed the fruits in? I was easily able to get soot black following the guide and feeding order. I recently used the same site to change colors again, and got the color I was going for without any further tweaking, but sometimes it is necessary because I think the RGB is slightly RNG if you know what I mean. LOL

Are you making sure to follow the suggested feeding order as well? Feeding in the wrong order can result in a different colour than you intended.

Also if you do not get a message about the feathers changing colour after feeding each time, it is possible that feed did not take effect the time a message didn't come. Following the feeding order reduces the chances of this happening.

It isn't an exact science so there can be some trial and error.

yeah ive been doing all of that and still nothing. i have no idea why. somethimes when i would follow the order i would move on to the next fruit and get the message telling me that my color will no longer change.

i used that website along time ago and it took me multiple tries to get it soot black. Like you, I followed the feeding order, my chocobo went from yellow, to dark brown, to violet to dark brown, dark blue and then finally soot black.

there's going to be trials and error, all you can do is follow the feeding order to (whatever color it currently is) to Soot black.

tl:dr if too much math just give me a shot and do what i wrote in the end in bold and underlined, basically yea, just believe me

to help understand just why soot black is so hard to get having an understanding how it works in general may help, i'll try to explain to the best of my ability, if its to convuluted than sorry

Basically your chocobo color is determined by literal rgb values, the color that you end up with is the one roundet closest to the value that your chocobo is on.

baseline your chocobo starts at desert yellow, Red 219, green 180, blue 87. your values cannot exceed 255 and can not go below 0

when you now feed your chocobo than every fruit either raises 2 values while lowering a third +-5, or it lowers 2 values while raising the third +-5, thats also why feeding order is important, as the calculator will assume every fruit counts, so feeding 20 xelpathol apples say is -100 blue but as you would hit 0 blue after 17,5 apples (if starting from desert yellow baseline chocobo) the last 2,5 apples (or -13 blue) wouldn't be accounted for meaning when you are finally done you end up with 13 blue more than intendet.

there is some rng involved, but its not completly cleared up how that came to be, theorys range from some fruit not registering to rgb values not allways moving +-5 but actually moving +- 3-7, at either rate the reason why you (and many others) end up kobold brown or ink blue is the following

sooth black rgb:43,41,35 (+119 points from 0/0/0)
kobold brown: 48,33,27 (+108 points from 0/0/0)
ink blue : 26,31,39 (+96 points from 0/0/0)

meaning kobold brown and ink blue are technically more black than sooth black while Also (thats what makes it so much worse) sandwiching sooth black kinda inbetween as both have 2 lower and 1 higher value , a different one at that.

the problem this presents is that you don't know your exact values, your ink blue chocobo could be exactly 26,31,39, or it could be 0,41,35 which would put 2 of 3 values at exactly sooth black level but still make your chocobo ink blue as the red value of ink blue is so much lower than with sooth black that it would actually match your given rgb values (0,41,35) 3 points closer than it would match sooth black.

Now even the calculator only knows your color, not your exact values so if you now tell the calculator your chocobo is ink blue the calculator will work with the assumption your color value is 26,31,39 and tell you to feed your chocobo to get its color values closer to 43,41,35.

If however your real color value is say 30,20,30 which would also give you ink blue than by trying to change your values from 26,31,39->43,41,35 you actually would go from 30,20,30->47,30,26 which would than again put you closer to kobold brown than to sooth black

unless you want to do a shitton of math yourself at this point your 3 best bets are

1 just use the calculator again, stop feeding the chocobo the moment you get the color change message, don't care how many more food it says to use, repeat until you get sooth black, should work out after some trys 99% of the time unless you are at some really fucked rgb values where you do an exact color bounce between two colors down to the sub value.

2.try to tank its values completly, so get it down to 0/5/0 or 0/0/5, (just feed like 15 apples/pears/berries in a 1/1/1->1/1/1->1/1..... way if you are allready kobold brown or ink blue, and get the most ink blue chocobo in existance), from there work your way upwards 17 apples followed by 8 plums (no alternating), should do the trick (with a bit of luck, again rng...)

3. if both fail. reset its color and start anew, though i would really recommend variant 1, it should work out given a few more trys.

On 2 occasions I got soot black, I changed either the amount of fruits needed or the order. The calculator is not as accurate as it’s lead to be believed. When you get stuck in a loop, change things up a bit and you’ll hopefully land on it. It worked for me that way. Good luck.

You seem to forget how costly these various food items cost. Someone who wants a color change but has limited funds 'resetting and starting anew' can be impossible.

I know it took me FIVE tries to go from Rolanberry Red to Soot Black and I followed the calculator feeding order for each color... thankfully the number of food items decreased the darker the chocobo turned out... still, when Marketplace sellers sell stacks of 99 instead of smaller stacks, it can become quite costly just to get the handful of food items that you need.

which is why i gave it as a last resort ? aside from "i really don't know how costly they are nowadays, especially on different datacenters, back when i last colored a chocobo that stuff no matter the color you wanted would have cost me less than i spend in a week on raid stuff" it was literally what i recommendet him to do when he basically reached a point where his color values are so over the place even the calculator basically turns into guesswork that may take him nowhere in ages. I quite literally ordered my recommandations (which i actually did explain how/why they should work, though i admit thats so much numbers it even gets hard to follow when you are the one writing them down) based on cost/ease of use.

I guess I have it easy then...being in an FC where I have constant availability and use of our garden (since no one else uses it). Growing is so great compared to buying the fruit on the MB. I guess I also have it easy when it comes to using the color calculator site, every time I've ever changed colors, it's either been right the first time, or right the second time after a minimal second feeding. /shrug

You can grow the food yourself and you can buy the seeds with allied seals (if I recall correctly) and they're very cheap. I think they take two days to grow.

There's a bit of RNG involved. When I was trying to get mine to soot black it took me some time, even though I knew I was doing it right. Think I went between green and brown a few times before finally landing on soot black.

When going from the original color to the desired color I'll just directly follow the amount/feeding order from that site and cross my fingers. If it doesn't get the desired result, I recalculate using the same site from the current color to the desired color. After recalculating I'll write down the new feeding order and feed the chocobo until the message pops up that the feathers are changing, at which point I wait out the color change. If the result isn't what was desired, I continue down the feeding list, waiting out each color change as the message pops up that new feathers are growing in.

I just used this method again on an alt that didn't reach the desired color the first time, the new calculation had about 8 fruits to go through, but I got the feathers message with the first fruit and stopped at that. That one fruit managed to get to the correct color. If I had just thrown the entire second batch of fruit, I would have overshot the desired result. Whatever method you use, good luck!
