Anyone having fun with DOL?

I started playing FF in 2017. I played WOW from 2007 until 2017, I pop on every now and then, it's hard to break away completely ;). The one thing about FF that I wish was more WOWish, is the collecting of materials. It would be so much easier to DOL without having to change in order to see what your collecting. Or at the very least have a location map you can switch to enabling you to view what is in the area you're at, kind of like the Aether Compass. I've started DOL a few times but get bored or frustrated and quit it..Is there any hope for me? And please don't tell me to go play WOW if I don't like how things are done here, it's a childish response and totally unnecessary. :) Thanks!!

Many of us enjoy it because it's not like gathering in WoW. It's better done when you want to be gathering as opposed to take a random whack at a node you just happened to be passing by while doing a quest.

If you gather enough, you get to know what nodes are in the zone and roughly where they're at. If you want to go after a specific material, the gathering log is always there to help you find the general location (and time if it's timed node you've gathered from in the past).

If you're hoping it's going to get simplified to WoW levels, I'd say you're out of luck. The boredom and frustration you feel at the need to change classes isn't likely to go away.

I have fun with DoL. There are few things I would change about it, nothing big.

The changing of jobs and classes by equipping a different weapon or tool is central to XIV so that won't change.

Never played WoW so I can't compare the two.

Its more of a mindset. "I'm going to gather/fish now..." usually with an objective in mind - like fill up the gathering log or get some materials to make something. So I don't mind changing - I guess i'm used to it. (never played WoW)

The new Stealth and quick gather make it actually perfect for me. I'm not big into Fishing, but I do like the boats.

I put on an audio book and just disassociate. Next thing I know I have 300 of X. It's wonderful.

Gathering (miner and Botanist) has always been relaxing to me. Fishing i just find boring.

I like gathering a lot as I find it relaxing. It's nice to spend some time out in the open world seeing the sights and other players running around.
Leveling fisher in Costa Del Sol enjoying the ocean and night sky is a fond memory of mine.

I've liked doing DoL stuff because it doesn't require relying on other people (usually). The ocean fishing motivated me to start playing Fisher again after abandoning it during HW, though naturally since it's the fishing RNG plus relying on other players, I've put it down in hopes that there will be some adjustments to make it better. But now I'm interested in going around fishing again. I get pretty tired of the same old gear treadmill that plagues MMOs, so having something on the side that's less about raiding and meta crap and more about doing what I want is very nice.

While WoW's gathering system is more integrated, it gets extremely annoying when you're in a no-fly zone and have to go out of your way while questing just to get a certain mat (*shudders at the things I'd do to get more Anchorweed). So I'm perfectly content to have it as a separate class. Especially since the nodes are in fixed locations instead of being in various random locations depending on RNG.

Usually, I try to gather knowing what I'm after so when I'm i! the appropriate zone, I can just switch my class.

My only thing with WoW gathering is that they have a method to get meat and skins reliably and we do not. One day we shall get it..maybe...

Can get the ShB ones through the fate gemstones though.

We totally have that now. Its the aether bazooka we use in diadem. Quickly reduces an enemy into its base parts. Now to figure out a way to sneak it out while getting it to hold its charge. Machinist side-story quest?

I think FFXIV's gathering (and crafting) is far and away superior to how WoW handles it. If anything gathering and crafting in WoW has gotten worse over the years >_<. Especially crafting. Hopefully Shadowlands will fix some of that.

Ever since I tried them out they have been my highest leveled jobs. I just kind of like them.

Fun? I wouldn't really say I have fun with it. But it does have its uses. This Ishgard Restoration stuff is probably the most use I'll get out of my gatherers aside from collecting my daily treasure map. lol At most I would say that gathering is tolerable, at least for me.

Actually, I find FFXIV gathering to be more efficient than WoW's system, but extremely boring, in that you just circulate between 6 nodes in the same area over and over again. At least in WoW, there was some adventure to it, and the added reward when you came across a rare node. One big issue with WoW was that the nodes disappear a short time after being collected by a player, so the bots could clean out a whole zone unless you could get there before it, or just follow one and gather them before they despawn.

Not having fun at it though. I have more gil than I know what to do with, so the only times I gather now is to make stuff for myself that I don't want to pay MB prices for.
