Market Board Tax Changes

Patch 5.2 came in with some new changes to the tax system in place for the Marketboard, and well I just had a few questions as to ....Why?

It felt fine before, infact it was well worth to cough up a few gil 999 or 150, 200 even to teleport somewhere and avoid a 4k or 6k or w.e large amount of tax.

So why now? Why is it if I'm in the crystarium, buying from a crystarium Retainer vendor, that I have still have to pay a tax?

Maybe I'm missing some part of the puzzle, but it just doesn't make sense to me at all.

Anyone wanna shed some light on decision, because my minds boggled. The way it was before was great for those trying to save money (Which I always am).

I'm kind of hoping it changes back...

I would assume it's just a way to make a larger gil-sink in game. As it was before, you usually either had people teleporting (tiny fee) to get to their city to buy an item, or they just paid the fee flat-out. Now it's even across the board.


A most-likely-incredibly-inaccurate thought I had is maybe their awful coding is getting bogged down by a city or two having a large majority of the retainers/transactions, and this is a way for them to try and even it out. If you pay a fee in all cities, people won't be so picky as to where they place their retainers. :P

Because SE wants more/bigger gil sinks in the game. Though knowing players, this is going to result in someone starting up a 3rd-party market listing site so people can set up direct trades for high-price items to bypass taxes.

There was way too much gil in the economy even without gil farm bots being a factor.

It'll still takes ages before this has any meaningful impact, though.

Really, that's square's fault more than anyone's though. They handed gil out like candy on Halloween for doing the smallest of things.

This. Yoshida and the dev team clearly have no idea what they are doing when it comes to an MMO having a balanced economy. You can tell because they just removed Reused when it was a brand new move. They are too wishy-washy and they need to stick to one formula. Changing things around all the time makes everything so inconsistent.

So is there now no effect/reason to having a retainer based in a particular market?

The amusing thing is that the new tax system is actually BAD for the economy.

Before, when selling something, sometimes you could get away with selling it for more because you're selling in a certain city. Now? Well, now there is NO dissadvantage to just undercutting by 1 gil all the time, literlally no reason not to.

Money is strange in XIV.

Crafting and market board selling is a gil maker, but I've seen so many new players put off and discouraged by the undercutting that they remain on a 300k on average budget. All the people I know with like 30m+ are long time, active players or grind nonstop.

You either have too much from lack of ever buying anything, choosing to do everything yourself, or none at all because for want of minions, buying gear or apt. housing items.

Its because of world visit.

Most everyone uses Limsa to world hop, since it has mb's in the same zone as the aetheryte hub. This led a lot of people to move retainers to Limsa,because buyers are more willing to buy your equal costed thing if they dont pay a tax.

Thus, fewer taxes.

They either had to:

1. Remove all mb taxes.

2. Tax everyone the same.



They certainly werent going to do 1.

You know players are spoiled when they balk at such a small gil sink. There's not that many in the game to begin with.

The thing i dont like about this new MB stuff is that it feels again punishing players for something that clearly is the devs fault because they didn't thought enough ahead. Yea Limsa is without a doubt the best spot for the mentioned reasons. It allows world travel and the mb and retainer is just a jump from the aetheryte away. But it was clearly the wrong decision because it ruins a lot of other features.

For example if someone had put up some very expensive items in less frequent zones like Uldah or Kugane it was still worth a visit, now this zones will get even fewer players because it dont matter anymore. Players will also still favorite Limsa because of the mb close to the aethrite and world travel. It would have been a far better solution for our lazy devs if they would also enable world travel via Kugane and the Crystarium. This way the two citys would get more visitors again and would provide a good alternative to Limsa because there mb can also be reached real fast without changing how the whole system works.

This was clearly a very lame move. I do not have a issue with paying the taxes but i feel relay sorry for players that do not have so much money and used to travel to other city's to save some.

It's not that I'm 'spoiled' or other players are 'spoiled', in my case it's more of, I'm POOR, and saving money/making it is not really easy for me and many others i meet. Sure sometimes the markets great and we can make a few, but then it goes back down again.

Point is, this whole jumping cities was saving a few pennies here and there and that HELPED. ALOT. Believe it or not. So no its not being 'spoiled' in my case, it's just being POOR.

The only people its going to affect are those who actively are buying stuff from market, a newbies who has just started the game.

Now I can't RP as a corrupt politician that would teleport to cities to evade taxes anymore :(

Well why, now you can RP as a corrupt politican who makes his purchases on Black Market (i.e. direct transactions instead of using certified sellers services)

Ehh, I like no longer being obliged to teleport to a different city just to get the discounts on crafted 480 gear.

the small gil sink is about 5% of your purchase price. if my math adds up. I bought an item for 2mil yesterday, I had to pay 100k gil on top of the item. I was rather put off myself. Can I afford it? Clearly.

Does it surprise me no..seeing how much abuse world visits have done to market boards. Just seems another attempt by the dev team to fix the problem they created by punishing everyone instead of just putting a stop to world visitors liquidating complete market boards to resell elsewhere.

Look at the bright side: you no longer put your retainer on the "wrong" city!

That's not what changed with this tax change. The change was buying things from the marketboard, not selling them. Ishgard markets on Cactuar is still 2% reduced.

The whole point is that if you're trying to sell lower level blacksmithing products in Ul'dah, you might not see as many sales as you would if they were being sold in Limsa instead because that's where the BSM/ARM guilds are. Some people prefer Limsa as a selling location regardless of the product because it's just that convenient of a hub location compared to the other two starting cities.

Now though, it apparently won't matter where you sell from, because if buyers are getting taxed no matter where they are, the buyer's location won't encourage/discourage sales.

Hence why I'm looking for an answer to my earlier question -- does it not even matter anymore where the retainer is based from? Because it's kind of a deprecated "feature" now, if so.

No not really, I used to have a retainer in Limsa, Gridania and Uldah bc to me they are the larger markets now I have them in Gridania (my house location), Ishgard and Crystarium (because I like them).

This actually hits the rich WAY more than the poor. All those 1million+ purchases result in alot of gil going away. I think its a great move.

For those whining that "its SE's fault for not dealing with it" - guess what? They ARE dealing with it.

Most rich people have ways to acquiring gil fast so it really doesn't matter to us. I'll make millions upon millions a day if i'm actively crafting. Though what it will impact is overall prices on the MB. You're going to see prices go up from omnicrafters buying mats and then passing the tax onto you guys in the final sale.

At this point, next step is make the market board datacenter-wide. Huge QOL because today we all jump multiple servers for checking it but restricted to ours when selling.

Think this was long overdue. XIV needs more gil sinks.

Just for playing the game, you get gil handed out like candy. Not to mention the other currencies like scrips which can be converted into gil.

Then there was Reclaim/Reuse. Let's face it, while it's fun reclaiming/reusing expensive mats; it devalues the selling price of those mats in the long run.

I'd also like to see super expensive mounts or glams as additional gil sinks eg: 50 million gil or above.

I know this has kind of passed by now but, I thought it'd be worth to give a visual I've just encountered.

If you're on a budget, there's no way this is new change is going to help you save. 33 extra in tax, regardless of where I am, infact it only goes up as prices increase.

Who was this supposed to help exactly? At the very least, put the actual tax into the base price, so it's not a surprise when i click on it to purchase.
Can we get it changed back, I'm already poor as is, this is NOT helping.

It’s probably to help pay for the servers.

I don't mind it. I'm so cheap IG. I wish I was this cheap IRL.

oo tax 5k ok I can pay 200 Gil to save 5k teleport away I go.

And I have over 45m gil.

Add property tax and add another 0 to it for every property you own so those players with multiple FC houses grandfathered in can be wrung for everything they are worth.

I kind of like the fact that selling in a different city than Limsa is a thing again. Checking the city taxes when selling is a nice replacement for teleporting to different cities when buying.

Undercutting hasn't really changed. You still want to be at the top of the list but now you don't have to undercut by more than a teleport cost. It makes a difference for the smaller sales.

I'm amazed people actually go to the trouble of porting somewhere else to save on taxes. Then again I don't often buy from the MB, prefer to make things myself if possible.

I also struggle with the idea that it's hard to make money. I make a few hundred thousand a week without trying, just by selling the stuff from Quick Ventures. If I actually try to make money, I can make a couple of million a week, no trouble. I bought a new house a couple of weeks ago (haven't had one for a while), it cost me around 3 mil plus the cost of building the house. I was back up to my pre-purchase savings last weekend. All I did was have my venturers farm high level mats - just basic 70-80 mats - and then I quick synthed a few stacks of ingots, lumber, cloth and sold those. 3.5 mil back in less than 2 weeks

On the big ticket items or huge stacks of items like crafting mats, tping to the city where the retainer was selling from could save you huge amounts of gil. For example 5% of 500k is 25k.

Vet players might think it's little but for sprouts it hurts.

But yeah, it's easy to make gil although I will add the caveat, with crafting/gathering being casualised and everyone and their aldgoat being a crafter/gatherer, it's harder to make sums like 100m a day/week that crafters used to make in previous expansions during the initial few days of patches.

There are other ways to make gil which do not involve crafting/gathering but these 2 are the most consistent gil makers.

I think many sprouts see vet crafters who have gil capped, wonder why they can't do the same as they have to deal with aggressive undercutting thanks to the increase in number of crafters/gatherers and World Visit. Additionally, now they are being slapped with additional MB fees.

Everyone now is in crystarium or ishgard.

As a new player who never dealt with the prior system (and got here while looking up what purpose the tax served), I kinda wish the game kept track of your taxes paid per region and did something with that information. Being that it shows a grand company logo on my screen, I figured it would have something to do with my relationship to the grand company. I'm no fan of creating a class structure out of how much business one does, but it just seems like it would be interesting information to keep track of.

Like others have said, it’s a Gil sink for the most part. I’m not a fan of it and I hope they reconsider implementing the old system back.
