Now, I might be talking out of my ass here. But bare with me.
I had leveled THM to 36~ before they completely redesigned the job. So after hitting 50 with WAR and taking a break from leveling I finally decided to take up THM.
Boy was this strange.
Its like, I thought it'd be like on XI in which you had to wait up pace yourself in as to not pull hate, then dish it all out after the enemy's already a bit weakened.
Completely wrong. But we'll get back to that in a second.
At first I just assumed all my elemental spells were the same thing but of a different element. Wrong again.
Thunder tier spells = single target, they combo. Thundara in combo is fast-casted. So great.
Blizzard tier spells? They don't combo. No, but one inflicts heavy and the other bind. And the one with bind is AOE. But I thought man, this is one of those things that never trigger off... wrong. The spell is fast-cast and inflicts bind pretty much always.
Fire and fira? They combo. And they are AOE. And they do DOT. So great for multi enemy battles.
Sleep? Sleepga? NO RECAST TIMER! My god! MY GOD.
Freeze? It lowers your hate by a FUCKTON. Seriously, you can go from blinking red to green basically.
And flare is this awesome AOE that casts regardless of your target dying or not!
So back to the story. So after testing out all these spells and seeing how well they perform and how totally overpowered they are in terms of damage I realize: its not about pacing yourself. Its about distance and hate control!
Flare hits everything? Just toss a sleep at one, or freeze at the other. Or hell, sleepga if you're feeling it (although mobs go down so fast its not even worth it).
Toss blizzara and run away, then follow with a fire combo. Mobs are done!
Run out of MP, BANG! Convert and you keep going.
We might not have stoneskin but we get decoy and feather foot. Plus healing wind to heal ourselves every now and then which is specially nice after convert.
So yeah, so far I'm seeing BLM as this bitching hate juggling dynamo instead of the usual fragile figure that hides in the back lines. I'm sure it won't be like this in boss battles, but in its every day use? So great. And different!
(oh and our job abilities? we get m acc +, reduced spell cost, converts damage to MP, converts to HP, all sorts of useful stuff! Its pretty damn hard to run out of mp if you keep using these even without refresh)

I forgot to add that thundaga is broken and needs to be fixed. Seriously. Thundara is fast-cast on combo and does more damage and gets resisted less often.

I have both my Blm and Whm 50'd and at this point I'm having a hard time picking my next job.
None of the melees seem to even come CLOSE to the pure destructive power Blm can put out and all that retargeting after a mob dies and chasing things around seems like such a hassle. Being on Blm is more like sitting in an ops center and launching tactical drones at targets from a few dozen miles away and watching the pretty explosions. The melee just seem so boring ~.~* -

Well, I think you have some misconceptions about the job but they are the nuances of content-runs and not really anything else. Here are some things you can put in your back pocket as you experience it more. And yeah, reading the OP gets me giddy because the job really is that good.
1. You are going to have to pace/parse when you fight bosses. Actually, anything that doesn't die fast needs this.
2. When nuking with thunder spells you actually will get more out of just throwing out tier 1 > tier 2, and then repeating that cycle (using freeze when needed). The reason behind this is because cast timers and mp preservation along with a minimal difference between tier 2 and tier 3.
3. When you have to burn a crowd down (ironically, with fire spells...) make sure to work with the other BLM so you don't rip hate and get yourself dropped in all of 5 seconds - especially because one nuke won't kill them and you are bound to have trouble casting with 10 mobs popping you.
4. Save Blizzara for tight spots during crowd control since instant casting can save you.
5. Don't overlap sleep - the patch introduced resistance over time.
Sadly, you missed out when THM could solo most anything. I used to solo the sentinel's helmet (a nightmare to get to alone so I would usually just stay there after farming was done.) If I had a time traveling Delorean I'd spot you a ride! -

The easy explanation of why your Thundaga's are "weaker" then your Thundara's is because Thundara (on combo) receives a INT modifier bonus. No other spell receives this. As Actus said, it's not broken, you just don't fully know the in's and out's of your job.
Now, I should mention that running heavy INT can produce a better yield of parsed numbers, but generally a heavy MATK build will produce much higher numbers on other spells then what you see with Thundara on a heavier INT build.
I'm not sure what Actus's build is, but I've been playing around a lot with heavier MATK builds, INT builds, a mix, etc. on Coincounter and Chimera and I see numbers a lot like what Actus posted above. I had a Burst crit for 1998 just tonight, which is from this parse on a heavy MATK build (no pot).

We don't know if Actus had MAP potion or just some crappy hp/mp regen thing on, but his log does mention medicated status. Mnks have super awesome 120+ DPS on miser.. IF this this this this this are all goin on, it IS impressive, but take away the buffs and the numbers plummit. It could be that a BLM with great buffs does great damage just like a mnk with great buffs does great damage.... common sense? yep, but take em away? Its just best to list all buffs when showing a big number, like full SS's instead of partials.

To piggy-back on some of the math already hinted at in this thread (it mostly comes from posts I make on BG)...
Thundara is very consistent on high level targets because you receive a straight +700 MATK bonus when you combo with it. There is a MATK vs. Ele-Resist check involved in the magic damage formula. So for high level targets, your check will come out in the mob's favor; however, with the +700 MATK bonus on Thundara, it makes this check much, much more favorable for you. This is why on nearly all high resist targets like Chimera and Ifrit, Thundara damage actually exceeds Thundaga damage (possibly even on Crit) for players who do not min/max their gear with knowledge of the formulae.
Thundaga's crit bonus is indeed +175 'crit potency' and it will allow you to break the normal +175% critical damage bonus cap. Actus's screenshot is impressive and I think likely accentuates this point. While I do not know his gear set, I would venture to say he has correctly matched his gear set to optimize Excruciate . I hope he comes back and post his gear set, but based on my knowledge of the formula, it is likely close to...
If I had to go out on a limb and guess, his +potency from gear it would be around 275 using a triple Saga Might hand. Even with all this and the +175 bonus from the combo, you still don't break the 175% bonus even though you're allowed to. You can debate on whether damage output is actually stronger with normal damage gear on the head and legs also.Quote:

I think the battle mechanics portion of the dev team has done a very stellar job with stat adjustments despite the majority of the official forum community complaining incessantly about it. BLM damage sets are a very obvious example of this as I promise you a "normal" BLM probably does literally 1/2 the damage on a Thundaga as Actus did in the screenshot. -

The SS was from testing with gear swap macros and a MCP build. Not a highly DPS efficient means for instant fights such as Coincounter, but might prove useful in future fights.
I've been trying to get a maximal attempt w/ a Burst combo. It should top 3k easily if I can pull it off right.
