An update. But, even if The Witcher is nice, I think it should be an animation series.
Imagining an realistic Lalafel give me cringes.
Or a Daddy-Roe.

Wasn't there one already that was ridiculed for its name: Daddy of Light or something?
DADDY OF LIGHT. :'D That trailer seemed so awkward, haha.
Yeah, I agree with OP in that it should be animation. Whether it's CGI like FFVII Advent Child or more of an anime style. Final Fantasy does actually (and old one) have at least one anime, so they could definitely go that route, imo.
That sounds terrible.
Unless it has state of the art CGI, practical effects, costumes and make up it's gonna fail.
For it to succeed it will need a WoW movie lvl of production and budget.
It will look and feel awkward eitherwise.
The Witcher show managed to pull it succesfully because The Witcher is based on a realistic mediaeval world which is easier to repliacte than Eorzea which is wilder and way more fantastic.
I hope Hrothgar look like the "Cats" from Cats
The WoW movie looked pretty decent imo, but it was still considered a failure. Personally I enjoyed it, but to enjoy it fully you kinda had to be "in the know". A good or half decent budget doesn't always make a good product. It is what people choose to do with that budget that can make all the difference. Personally, I will remain cautiously optimistic about an FF XIV live action series. I want it to be good, but I'm not expecting it to be.
If it isn't animated, I don't have high hopes.
I wouldn't mind a retelling of 1.0. Though I would absolutely be opposed to them just rehashing the MSQ. That's a recipe for disaster given how it's structured.
I just can't see the character designs lending themselves well to live action at all. Either you severely compromise on the more fantastic races, or you need a lot of good CGI to make them work convincingly - and they still might end up in the uncanny valley, because realistic humans aren't supposed to have proportions like that, but stylised characters get more of a pass.
I can see this working as an anime, but IMHO not so much as a live-action show.
I totally forgot this was a thing. Unless this has a pretty big budget and some big names attached to it, i'm expecting Sword of Truth quality followed up by a cancellation after a negative response from everyone that isn't familiar with the game.
If the show would be like The Witcher in quality, if not higher then it should be great and I would gladly watch it.
If it ends up being like most Japanese TV shows then it won't be that good!.
I mean, the use of clunky CGI depends on which part of ffxiv they are aiming for, if the story is set around lets say as example Garlemald civil war after the death of Solus or the events previous to that it would fit for a live action serie as the characters that appear would be human-like.
But a group of adventures fighting a Morbol or the WoL battleing Ifrit would look ackward unless very good cgi was involved.
I agree here and there is context missing: The last high budget FF movie series that wasn't just some pandering tie-in to the mainline non-mmo titles was Spirits Within. So temper your expectations and your will I understand that.
However, this is also supposedly the same group who cast and did The Witcher show which I've heard is fantastic despite what mainstream review sites say and is super successful so they probably have a half-decent budget to begin with. I'm not saying we should be hyped but I am saying being cautiously optimistic is a very good thing to be right now given what we know.
EDIT: It might not even come out. This is just looking for a director.
I have hope for this.
Hmm. Honestly I didn't like the Witcher series that much. The production values were decently high, but I found the characterizations and specifics of the narrative a bit wanting (were they expecting all the sex scenes to carry it, or something..?)
I hope they'll do better for an FF14 series. But. Well, Witcher is mostly humans and very human-likes. FF14's races also give me a new worry - In a live action performance, it will be very easy for the costumes to be... unconvincing, shall we say.
To each their own, I loved the Witcher series. Granted, I'd probably be more apt to judge it had I read the books, but I plan to do so anyway. But for what it is I think it is great. Not perfect, but definitely a fun ride. It was never going to please everyone though, but overall it seems to be getting positive ratings from fans. Kind of reminds me of The Boys on Prime Video (LOVE THAT SHOW SO MUCH) because it was basically a hit right out the door, too. Critics are unreliable nowadays, so I typically don't take them seriously. And by the positive feedback coming in regarding the Witcher, a lot of others clearly don't.
And about the sex scenes...there were barely any. I'd honestly call the Witcher "Game of Thrones Lite" in that regard. Sure, there was nudity, but it wasn't all used in a sensual way. Obviously it can be perceived as such though and I can understand why. I just didn't get such vibes from all of it. I more or less saw it as a show of vulnerability in some scenes. Some of it was obviously fan service, but not all. After watching Game of Thrones, however, I think I can just overlook it. That show left me cold to such things and pure violence in shows and movies. lol A movie or show is much more enjoyable if you can just...view certain things passively so that you can enjoy a good story, at least in my opinion.
I'm curious about an FF XIV live series. I really am. And I really want it to be good. Video game to film adaptations just rarely go over well. A select few have succeeded, but there's a reason we don't see too many of them. It's about the risk vs the reward. When such a risk is taken, however, all that really happens most of the time is the film/series goes belly up almost immediately. It is one of those things where I've learned to hope for the best and expect the worst.
The Witcher worked. I thought it was really good, but you could really tell where they had budget constraints. It was also carried by some decent actors, especially Henry Cavill. The Witcher universe is primarily humans as well.
Budget constraints such as, the dragon(s), and the final battle, costumes, etc.
An FFXIV live action series would have to have great casting, and like I said a massive budget. There would be no way to bring some of the fantasy creatures, and the like alive without it. I do not see it pulling it off. Things like player races would look ridiculous as well, unless they showed primarily Hyur. Roe, lalafell, etc. would look awkward at best on screen. That is unless they altered these race's designs for the screen. Disney Star Wars works with a multitude of races, but Disney is also Disney.
It could go either way..
I would have preferred animated, just like Castlevania which is great
Ugh, I hated the witcher games - lackuster combat and boring plot. Devil may cry is loads better in every way.- And I don't think live action is the way to go for FF... animation or cancel the freaking project. I'm sick to death of productions thinking live action is the thing to do for anime like games. -stares at sonic. I don't care if it's so called fixed... his design is still fucking ugly as hell.-
Didn't they say the story was going to be centered around Cid before he left Garlemald? If so, that would remove the need for heavy character CGI. The other races aren't going to be found in the heart of the Empire.
