BLM flow and instant Cast logic problems

BLM instant casts and instant procs Arent Actually instant And they Should be off the GCD




It makes no sense ... when the BLM has the Cast time of a spell 2.6 seconds and the GCD of my BLM is 2.31 seconds
instant casting of the spell Gives you :::: 2.6 - 2.31 = 0.29 of Time.
that is how fast you cast An "instant" spell Over a normal cast ...only 0.29 Sec Faster.

The instant Cast spells all they actually do is lock your character from casting any spells wasting about 2.5 seconds of your rotation when they are spoused to be Side castes between spells and the BLM is a very time-specific job casting an instant Cast Lightning or fire III is just a waste of time over a Fire IV if it wasn't actually instant.

why in the middle of my rotation should I Lock about 2.31 seconds of my 15 secs Astral Fire to cast Lightning that interrupts my whole cast flow and deals inferior damage and can easily make me drop the astral fire faze... IF NOT to be only a side spell That should Be Actually Instant OR EVEN in umbral Ice Faze it slows the whole casting flow of the job and Just Feels So Clunky.


TLDR: the instant cast isn't actually instant It's only about 0.29 secs faster than a normal Cast For the sole reason that it's Chained to a GCD that renders the "Instant" cast ... Not so instant



the BLM is by far one of the hardest classes to play in high-end raids and be useful I can swear most of the time you are running around spamming umbral soul and trying to keep alive while juggling your 15-sec timer that if run out you need to spend about 10 to 8 seconds starting the rotation again



BLM is a mess in both game design and gameplay flow ... a time-based job that has many spells and mechanics that contradict its gameplay flow and whole idea making it one of
the most annoying painfully clunky classes to play and it needs to be fixed

alongside the instant cast problem, there are many mechanics in the BLM that are clunky and contradicting but this instant cast spells thing is the most annoying one so far

I'm no BLM pro but from what I read from you I gather that you might be misunderstanding the point of instant casts entirely in BLM's (and perhaps all casters') design.

Now that the stances are 15 seconds long and more comfy, there is no real way you can drop them by refreshing your Thunder DoT as long as you know that you can safely cast Fire 1 (or 3 with a proc) to refresh Astral Fire before it ends. Thundercloud offers some flexibility on when you want to refresh your DoT and offers a GCD where you can move or weave, that's it. It might seem to be a waste compared to a cast of Fire IV, but DoT uptime does compensate for when you cannot DPS much or at all (when moving for a mechanic for instance, and even then you have abilities like triple cast and Swiftcast to avoid "spamming umbral soul", which you should not do in an encounter unless the boss is not targetable)
Instant spells are weaving opportunities and movement tools, and arguably Xenoglossy is a burst opportunity with some flexibility to it. If you lose your AF or UI because of instant casts, you might be doing something wrong with the overall rotation of BLM.

I think BLM is currently at its highest, design wise with Shadowbringers? From what I read and my current experience of it at least. I don't think it's a Time-based job, but rather a job where optimization lies in planning ahead any mechanic / movement. There's nothing in its design preventing BLM to perform, and it actually has efficient tools to do so.

Most of the time that you lose your astral fire faze is after casting an instant spell because of the GCD lock of you other spells ... BLM is a cast based job haveing a GCD on such a class that already spends 2.6 seconds doing the abilities is in itself an error in the design of the class and let me tell you... BLM ISNT one of the best classes to play high end it's even statically the lowest job to complete high-end trails and raids ...the lowest

Uh. Instant casts aren't meant to be placeholders for hard spellcasting. They're there to give you the ability to either move, snap refresh, or weave (which BLM doesn't really have any weaves apart from buffs). Firestarter and Thundercloud are nice because they allow you SOME ability to move without sacrificing all of your damage. It's why Scathe, as bad as it is, should probably be on your bars somewhere, just to have your GCD continually moving when you are, as a last resort.

If you're willing, I'd say give Red Mage and Summoner a spin to get a better understanding of what instant casts will do to your kit, just how much they add to your mobility and weaving potential.

that is adapting to the problem not fixing it ...and its called instant for a reason it INSTANT ... which is both contradicted and ruined by the GCD that is basically the same (time-wise) as casting the spell normally making it basically useless if not just to cast a spell when moving ... once every 60 seconds in a fight that you can't even stand still in for even 8 seconds without and Aoe or a mechanic interrupting your rotation

Th...then don't use your Firestarter and Thundercloud procs when you don't have to move? Instead continue to cast Fire 4 and Fire 1 to refresh Eno and Astral Fire stacks, as you should be doing, and when you have to move, use that instant Fire 3 or Thunder 3 you have waiting in the wings so you can deal some damage when you move? Or Triplecast to cast Fire 4/1 on the run? Black Mage is the hardest class to optimize just because movement is their arch-nemesis, but it's really not that hard to understand why instant-casts are integral to your kit.

am sorry this reply in its own shows that you don't understand the flow of the BLM ... I don't Get to cast whenever I want there is a timer stuck on my forehead to keep the fire or ice faze alive ... ... AND LOCKING my character (which my main issue here) for two seconds for a fake "instant" cast is my problem ... playing a black mage you can barely finish a rotation even a single time in the high-end content AND it's CLEAR that instant spell intent in their design is to be as the name suggests instant ... this is my main argument the GCD makes it not so instant ...

Wow...this is wrong on so many levels I don't even know what to say and it just shows that you don't understand the role of procs in the BLM rotation and how to manage your enochian and fire/ice timers...in other words, you have a poor understanding of BLM's general rotation and priorities.

Truly, asking for more oGCD stuff on BLM has to be one of the most absurd things I've read on this forum.

you see ... this what I mean adapting to a bad clunky mechanic instead of wanting it to be better ... I have easily over 2000 ++ hours playing ONLY BLM AND ONLY THAT ... I don't care to play anything else am a caster player in this game and many many other MMOs
every time I try to speak about the BLM I get flooded by many people who don't even main the class comeing to speak about it ... am sure your lvling experience was good in the BLM but if you ever tried to play it more then just to max lvl you will understand the little things that makes it one of the most underperforming jobs (high end) in this game ... people are easily blinded by the damage thinking this job is doing great ... I LOVE casters I love that style of gameplay ...but in a class that has Cast time having GCD at all makes no sense

Adapting to bad design doesn't make it non-exicitent ... SURE you can sleep on a hard rock like a master ... but it's still a painfully annoying rock you are sleeping on

I think you're seriously misunderstanding the basics of BLM and some things in general.
Instant casts and off globals are two completely different things and have a different purpose. Instant casts are casts that are on global cooldown BUT have no casttime - like Xeno, procs and any triple/ swift casts. They offer you a double weaving window and mobility for one gcd.
Off globals are a completely different thing. No skill in this game was ever turned from a regular cast into an off global via buff. Off globals can be weaved during your global cooldown and while the BLM doesn't have many skills that need weaving, without instant casts you'd constantly be clipping. And THAT is the actual "locking your character in animation and preventing them from casting".

Triplecast/ Swiftcast doubles as dps gain when used on casts longer than your gcd and mobility tool. The ~0,3sec you gain by having three instant Fire IV compared to casting it not only is a dps gain, it also gives you almost 1sec of additional breathing room to get more casts done before you have to refresh AF. And the mobility + 3 double weaving windows are fantastic. It's the reason why the opener works as well as it does, because you can pot, throw LL and (if neccessary) use Addle/ MW to help mitigate damage if the boss starts with an aoe.

BLM is the class with the least ogcds and weaving windows (only counting dps classes here), so asking for instant casts (which offer said windows) to be turned into ogcds (which need said windows) is a pretty good way to completely screw BLM gameplay.
The challenge of BLM is to maintain your steady rotation while keeping uptime and handling mechanics and I can assure you, it's quite possible. BLM performs really well. The only boss where I found many mechanics a nuisance was E3s.

I'm not sure what you did with your 2000++ hours of playing only BLM but leaning the basics of the class apparently wasn't part of it. And stating that people who know what they're talking about (just because they haven't tagged their main class as BLM in forums doesn't mean they have no knowledge of the class) makes you seem like a troll.
BLM definitely doesn't need any changes in gameplay. It flows and performs well, escpecially at max level and has enough tools to react to mechanics but not too many which would take away the biggest challenge of playing BLM well. Some classes have more difficult rotations but are easier to handle in practice, with BLM it's simply the opposite.

Alright so i could take my time to carefully explain to you why you are wrong and why instant casts work the way they do, but i'm sure other people can manage to do that far better than i ever could. Instead i'm here to call you out on your bullshit. Specifically this part:

You have grand total of 8 mounts and 30 minions. There is absolutely no way you have 2000 hours played. The claim that you only play blm is false too as you have lvl 80 ninja and some parses on that.

Speaking of parses you have no savage clears and your highest Normal raid parse with blm is sitting at grey 23% in voidwalker. Your only extreme primal clear is single titania where you got mere 8% which in all honestly is pretty pathetic. So tell me dear OP, what were you saying about that "high end" gameplay?

So I'mma admit something: My BLM is level 71. Mostly because I've never been a fan of turreting. I like having my movement options. It does feel good to roll out the Fire 4s and watch boss HP just melt, but I like to jitter and move on a whim more, so poor BLM sits on my To-Do list.

However, just from a cursory glance, BLM changes very little from 70 to 80. They get a Fire phase combo ender, the ability to swap with full stacks after emptying mana, a great Eno maintainer during downtime, and a single target, instacast Foul. Nothing genuinely game changing, just new toys and lovely QoL things. Which tells me their general gameplay flow changes very little from 70, which is something I know and understand like the back of my hand. I use Sharpcast on cooldown for that delicious proc; I use Triplecast to stay out of danger when it's not in my opener; I have Swiftcast available with an easy buttonpress; and yes, if worst comes to worst, I have Scathe in the cases that I screw up boss timings and have nothing left to help me in my movement.

Unlike you, sir, I take the time to learn the kit, even on classes I don't necessarily like all that much. Partially it's because I do like to help other players struggling to understand a class, but also because it just makes me a better player to know the strengths and limits to different jobs. Black Mage is extremely movement averse, and the most basic use of their oGCDs is to help mitigate that aversion when all of the endgame fights require movement. It's really, REALLY not that hard to understand.

again, just no. with 2000+ hours in blm practice you should be able to execute the rotation (which is incredibly straightforward too) without having to look at your AF/UI timer too much. you can easily utilize thundercloud procs/firestarter procs/xenoglossy for movement purposes, granted you're familiar with the fight. try to find VODs or study logs of high-level players to see how they manage to keep uptime, but please dont spread outright lies like "even the best BLMs cant keep with the boss attacks and mechanics". BLM as it stands has a ton of movement options, and you can now refresh thunder ANYWHERE in your rotation.

I get where you are coming from. However due to the game being designed the way it is, what you're asking for is pretty much impossible.

I'm a BLM main who's been playing since HW and each expansion has made high-end BLM a slightly different animal. If I understood right, your complaint is from the fact that so-called 'instant' spells still have CD that must be observed, separate from cast timers. This is true for every class/job in FFXIV. Its the very framework of the game and its there for a good reason.

Imagine if you had 2 xenoglossys saved up and a third was about to be ready and you were going to pop all three together but you mashed the button too quickly and only one went off and that threw you off and you mashed some more but you missed that window and lost the third xenoglossy and your enochian dropped off as well. The mandatory space between when you can press buttons and perform actions weeds a lot of this out, or at least that's what I've come to understand.

Unless there's another argument I'm not seeing. In any case, I'm happy with how our instant casts work (along with Triple and Swiftcast). Sorry its not working out for you but I feel like the alternative would be a hot mess.

Whenever I speak about the BLM ... there is always your kind of people...Barely play it - only lvled it - never even did like the class - AND BY GOD ...you are all masters of it when it comes to speaking about it ... I play BLM I am friend with many BLM and I watch a lot of people who actually play it Mainly ... and every time there is a new high-end raid or trial am left with the question how the hell am I gonna be useful running around most of the time (KEYWORD USEFUL)... A "TURRET" class has no place in the move around land that is high end.

and you will not see me stop playing it ... I love the BLM unlike you I want the class to be better and I can see CLEAR problems in it when it comes to high performance while for some reason YOU ALL see a perfect class that has NOT A SINGAL PROBLEM

Thats why i love BLM, its slow but its not easy to manage and play properly. I dont want it changed because you cant play it, you should try different job if you find it annoying.
Instant cast is there so you could start your opener fast. Light spells are not useless, they are doing decent dps if you look into logs.

First off, no one here is angry, you just seem to fundamentally misunderstand the class and how instants are supposed to work. If youve such a mastery as you say you do, have you cleared all of savage on your black mage? Can you clear stone sea sky on black mage even?

As for your final point, to an extent yes, black mage does need to be "clunky" (despite this probably being the smoothest iteration of black mage yet) because an optimised black mage does so much damage it would actually be unfair if black mage wasnt "clunky", and both the other casters would essentially be pushed out of content.

Its great that youre passionate, but try to listen to what others say to you, a good hint is if everyone you speak to is saying youre wrong, odds are you should consider what theyre saying, instead of spouting out a no true black mage fallacy

er, im just gonna give you the benefit of doubt because im honestly not sure if you're trolling or not.
but anyways, you seem to be under the delusion that having to cast thunder at all is a loss compared to exclusively just focusing on f4, which is not the case. it's been mathed out that you should just use thunder like any other dot in the game, refreshing it as it's gonna fall off. however, with thundercloud procs in the mix, you don't wanna let those drop either so in fact: refresh thunder as the dot OR the thundercloud proc is about to fall off, and it will be a gain even if you have to "interrupt" your rotation.
that being said, thunder being instant just wouldn't work on a job like blm. you're locked to casting most of the time, its the whole idea of the job - you're locked to place a lot of the time but you have a simple rotation in exchange, and your optimization is mostly going to be fight-specific movement optimization. you can't just suddenly give blm a ton of oGCDs because we simply don't have the weave space for all of em. thundercloud procs should be a movement tool for you if anything. if you dont have anything else and you need to move, its ok to clip your thunder dot a bit too and use your proc early for movement. plus the gcd thunder puts you on will allow you to weave stuff in. i really don't understand your point on how it's a "flawed" design.

and believe me, reaching the 23rd percentile on voidwalker does not count as "reaching that mastery". and before you ask yes, i do actually main BLM and i have no issue with not being a liability, so i really don't understand where some of the comments you're making are coming from.

I have a question. In the OPs opening statement he tried to showcase the actual "cost" of an instant cast by subtracting the GCD from the cast time. I think he did 2.6s - 2.31s getting a positive 0.29s. But isn't that the reverse of the logic. I would think you'd start with the GCD first and subtract the cast time. Because with the you'd get 2.31s - 2.6s = -0.29s indicating that you've wasted 0.29s before you can next attack, if the skill is hard casted. This works with all of the spells/skills that have cast times. Its recast - cast to show you how much time you gain or lose to use another skill OGCD or GCD.if I have an instant cast Fire spell that's basically 2.31s - 0s = 2.31s, giving me that time to use an oGCD skill in its place or move as needed.

Yes. Though it doesn't matter which one you subtract from which as long as you understand what's going on. That's why triplecast for example is a gain and not just a movement tool, since the cast time in fire IV is longer than your GCD, making it instant you'll shave off the extra time needed for the cast. The OP did understand that logic though, what they're suggesting is making thundercloud actually instant, as in make it an oGCD that doesn't trigger the GCD at all.

Back in early Heavensward I really wished that Thundercloud procs refreshed AF or maybe just added 3s to both your stance and Enochian timer or something so that it was never self-sabotage to use them. Nowadays, our timers and general job mechanics are generous enough that we can pretty much always fire off our procs without regretting it. It sounds like the OP just hasn’t learned good rules of thumb for proc use, so they’re getting frustrated at what appear to be conflicts between Thundercloud and Enochian.

Generally, DarkMagician, you’ll want to release your Thundercloud proc when either it or the enemy’s Thunder III DoT is about to run out. As long as your AF timer has like 6 seconds or more on it when you do this you should be able to follow up with either Fire or Despair and keep all your plates spinning. My favorite thing to do is to use Thundercloud or Firestarter when I have either 4400 or 4000 MP left, because I can activate Triplecast during the global cooldown and then cast F4, F4, Despair at instant speed and therefore a substantial time gain.

You have time on your timer for procs i think it is just a matter of your timing. I can see somewhat what you are saying though.
IDK blm flow is not the most natural among jobs, but is still far better then Nin i think, lol
While i have not played blm much at all in Shadowbringers, i had been a blm main for 4 years. (I main DNC in Shadow and did Red Mage more in Stormblood)

So, from what I understand is the TC has trouble reading. The tool tip says it makes the spell an instant cast and it does. No where in that tool tip or skill description does it say it makes the cooldown of said spell instant also. This all boils down to the topic creators failure to comprehend what he is reading.

You're talking about shoving nearly 2,400 potency a minute into the job by putting procs and Triple affected spells off the GCD.

That's bloody absurd, and you're going to make the job feel worse at the same time.

Truly an amazing accomplishment to completely unbalance a job and make it terrible to play at the same time.

For god's sake. NO. Absolutely not.
It would fuck up the whole gameplay while at the same time making it completely unbalanced.

BLM has relatively few oGCDs and weaving windows in an optimized scenario as you hoard Polyglot stacks for raid buffs which leaves you with fastcasts (used for Sharpcast and Triple primarily), procs and instants from Triple and Swift. Making procs and triple convert hardcasts into oGCDs would leave you with fewer weaving windows while at the same time increasing your amount of oGCDs significantly. You are left with only 3 instants per minute but at least 5 more oGCDs on top of Triple, Swift, Leylines, Addle, AM/ BtW, Manafont, Manaward and Sharpcast. Pots also prefer to have their own little instant.
Not to mention a huge chunk of your mobility is out of the window.
You're asking for a clipping nightmare and insanely low mobilty.

Average BLM is underwhelming because it's not a progress-friendly class and needs a lot of optimization and decent planning to pull nice numbers. Until you're comfortably on optimized farm you're usually fighting for ever % of uptime and Leyline uptime because bosses constantly chase you across the platform.

BLM is in a fantastic spot right now. If played somewhat well it offers really good and well-deserved dps, the whole toolkit it well-balanced and thought through. It's a class that offers constantly high dps compared to heavily- burst focused classes like DNC and is great for utilizing buffs on short CDs like AST cards or Trick Attack.
It's imho one of the few classes right now which turned out well in every aspect.
The whole concept of a simple basic rotation for casual content with a lot of optimization potential for endgame works really well.

I hope they don't touch BLM. It's near perfect as it is.
My only mini-gripe is the awkward mana tick. One instant tick/ small MP reg tied to the AF3 -> UI3 switch would be nice but that's really all I could possibly wish for.

BLM is one of the most stable jobs in the game. Your specific criticisms reveal a misunderstanding of the jobs fundamental gameplay loop, I'd highly recommend reading some guides.

As someone who's mained it since Creator and generally considers myself decent at the job, my only real criticisms of it are:

1. Inconsistent nature of Mana-tick timings, leading to inconsistent fight timings for potential b4 skips
2. High spell-speed builds outpacing Polyglot generation, sometimes forcing you to be even more immobile on the back of the already fairly rigid b4 skip opener.

It's lvl70 content, but BLM didn't change that much, mostly got QoL.
Since that's the producer himself playing the class, I think its a strong proof on its own if OP wants to stand on its position.
Or maybe even the producer himself was performing a lied rotation all along.

The OP simply missed the difference between instant cast and oGCD ability. He's probably a sprout with a very superficial understanding of the job's mechanics.

Indeed, and not only the job but basically the game's core gameplay.

This confusion seems to happen a lot on the forum lately.

TC doesn't just misunderstand BLM, he misunderstands the game mechanics in general.

Cast time is entire seperate from GCD, and they have their own functions.

Cast time is the amount of time it takes to charge up the spell, requiring you to remain stationary. You can have cast times of 1s, 2.6s, even as much as 8s. These implement 'cost' in the form of 'time remaining stationary'. This is time you are unable to react to mechanics.

GCD is your minumum time between weaponskills and spells. Sometimes it's consumed by the cast time, sometimes it's not.
You are free to move about during the GCD, generally.

The benefit of instant casts spells, is that you can utilise your GCD to move and react to mechanics, instead of sitting there like a muppet while you get hit by an AoE.
It is not the ability to chain cast high potency spells in rapid succession. That would be insanely overpowered.


This is stuff you should have learned before level 50.

Mobility would not be worse if Tripple and procs were off the GCD..

What?
Mobility means you can keep your uptime while moving/ playing mechanics.
Uptime means keeping your GCD rolling. Running around and spamming oGCDs is not keeping your uptime, it's poor practice and always a dps loss compared to keeping your GCD rolling while weaving oGCDs.
Everyone can just run around but that's not mobility.

Mobility would definitely be A LOT worse if both instant casts were instead oGCDs.
While Triple is also a dps tool, every time you use it it still gives you the opportunity to preposition for mechanics. Same with Swift and procs.
That starts as early as during your opener: it doesn't only give you proper weaving windows for pot, Swift and Leylines (Addle/ Manaward as neccessary), it also allows you to get into perfect position for the first mechanic(s) and minimize uptime loss in your Leylines. That's part of BLM core challenge: using every mobility window you have for prepositioning yourself to minimize movement for the next mechanic because you have no "on demand" mobility you can use without dps loss.

Of the 8-9 instant casts per minute (1 from Swift, 3 from Triple, 2 from Xeno, 2-3 on average via procs) this suggestion would turn 5-6 of them into oGCDs, therefore taking away 5-6 mobility windows for prepositioning.
You can't be serious when you say mobility would not be worse.
BLM would be a clipping nightmare with much less mobilty.
