It just occurred to me . . . .

If FFXIV comes to the PS5 (not counting PS4 backwards compatibility) , it will have been on three different generations of consoles. What do you think about this?

Personally, I think it's nifty but at the same time would prefer FFXIV didn't come to PS5, as that would probably be a gigantic mess.

Other then the PS5 having build in SSD ( last i heard anyway ) there would not really any upgrade to the game itself by going from ps4 ( pro etc ) to ps5.
unless they plan to up the graphics.

In what way?

Why would it be a mess?

No real different to FFXI being originally designed for PS2 and Windows 98 and yet getting not only a (now shutdown) Xbox 360 port (which, to be fair was just a straight port of the PC version), it is now running under Windows 10, nearly 20 years after it was first launched.

Plenty of games are such long lived they are ported to multiple successive console generations, and FFXIV would be hardly unique.

Yes, this right here. The generation console jump from ps4 to ps5 is not very revolutionary. So if Yoshida and crew are going to utilize the PS5’s specs somehow, it would have to mean a graphical upgrade. Otherwise, it’ll be the exact same as playing on a PS4 Pro.

Yoshida has said before they unfortunately have no plans in the near future for a graphics upgrade (likely will not ever happen anytime soon) so if it’s going to be on PS5, it’s just going to take advantage of PS5’s backwards compatibility feature, and look/run exactly the same as a PS4 Pro. Not really anything exciting about that, honestly. The purpose of it being, to reach out to players who perhaps traded in their PS4 for a PS5, and want them back on the game quickly.

I think they are also planning on launching FFXI on mobile devices now too.

Why on earth would it be a mess on the ps5, its likely using the same archetecture just with more power.

You say that, but "revolutionary" isnt really a thing that can happen anymore in terms of consoles really. All thats left is VR, or the holodeck lol.

The PS5 will be a larger leap than most think. The PS4 runs on a terrible CPU and an OK low end GPU. You will see a lot less framerate issues on the PS5.

May I ask why that is?

It won't really matter much except "oh hey, new console". They seem content to idle in the game's current limitations instead of upgrading what needs upgrading, so...I'm not gonna get my hopes up that a new generation of consoles will mean much for FF XIV.

Don't know why it would matter if it was coming to PS5. I thought they announced XBOX, and since next gen is coming out, you would assume they mean the next xbox.

FFXIV's will have been on 3 PS console generations. The real question is, will we get these HD Textures that people have been rambling about that we "Need" so much?

Unlike consoles, I've never heard a company saying "Due to some player's bad PC specs, we are having limitation X because we don't want to lock out people". I just heard it with consoles that are hardstuck with their hardware. So either I understood you wrong or you worded it poorly. Also, PC players can have different bottlenecks that you can solve by changing options (e.g. video memory, GPU power, CPU power, RAM,...) while the options on a console are built-around the fixed specs.

Compare the minimum PC specs with the specs for a PS4 and tell me again which is holding the game back.

Just imagine if that is an MMO :P

As for the PC minimal specs thing. You need to compare that to a PS3. They have made some improvements since dropping PS3 support however a majority of it was possible on a PS3 but it would have run like crap at around 15-20 fps. 1.0 had more visual detail than 2.0 however the PS3 struggled with it along with most non gamer PC's and low end gaming PC's. So they reigned it back with 2.0.

Literally FFXIV did this for Shadowbringers;

"We are dropping 32-bit support please upgrade if you want to continue playing", they wouldn't have done this if there wasn't enough of an issue in continuing support be it design, money cost what have you.

No console lost support this expansion only PC spec, small i'll grant you but PC themselves can be the weak link too it all depends on that minimum spec requirement.

I'll go with the unmentioned Option C: the discontinued platform, PS3 (or at least, that's the clearest example we've seen yet of a weak link).

It's also worth pointing out that minimum specs aren't a good barometer for whether PCs are 'holding a game back' or not. Unlike on fixed-hardware consoles, SE doesn't need to ensure that minimum specs for a PC provide a good experience - just a nominally playable one. As such, they're almost always lower than they should be. Recommended specs are a far better view into what a developer things a game needs to run properly, and lo and behold, those blow stock PS4 hardware out of the water (in fact, they're roughly what you'd see if you were trying to match up with PS4 Pro hardware).

A basic prerequisite for this condition to arise: the number of impacted users has to be significant enough to justify the development compromises. The 32-bit PC crowd is most assuredly not large enough for that. While we lack hardware statistics for XIV players in particular (or at least, I'm not aware of them if they exist), it's highly likely that SE wouldn't lose an appreciable number of customers until and unless they began pushing system requirements beyond the capabilities of a PS4, at which point that platform would definitely be more of a loss.

All this to say, PC as a platform is almost never a weak link from a hardware perspective. Occasionally weaker PCs may fall behind, but the numbers aren't large enough to restrict developers.

That's the big thing there about PC requirements. It's minimal spec to just run the game in a stable state. The game could be running at 30fps on minimal display settings to achieve that stability. Where as static spec consoles have an expected visual quality attached to them

How would it be a mess coming to PS5? They are working on a version for it. It was on PS3 and the transition to PS4 was great..
Also apparently xbot will be included next year, so same could be said for that platform then.

Consoles wont overtake PC anytime soon, simple because after each console release you won't see any new one for at least 5 years ( maybe even longer ) while any PC user can upgrade CPU/GPU etc every year if want to.

Also sounds like the people you have been raiding with need to upgrade their PC if they are having issues.

The people in your raid group sound like they're playing the game on $300 Walmart "gaming" PC's, don't know how to optimize their PC, or are playing on a PC older than a PS4. Or any combination of the 3. The only reason I sit at 60fps on 4k with max settings and all effects on is because the framerate is capped to not go any higher than that.

The main thing a consoles primarily hit is a good performance to cost ratio. Even when they launch they can't compete with the raw power available to PC's when the focus is on PC performance rather than cost.

I think it would only be a 'mess' if they were to port FFXIV to the Switch. I'm hoping that next-gen will see some sort of substantial upgrade in graphical fidelity, and that would be very difficult to achieve were the game shackled to a console that is even less powerful than the PS4.
