Races of the Source vs the First and those unique to each

interesting that the Fae Folk appear to be unique to the First

questionable: Are the Hobgoblins of the First what Goblins of the source would look like without their masks? (my guess is yes as the Hobgoblins look like the classic FF enemy "Goblin")

Through a quest (main or side I dont remember) in Rak'tika, we actually know that namazu did indeed live on the First. The image of one is found on a ronkan coin that we find. That they can't be found simply points to them becoming extinct in the wake of the Flood.

Also the Amal'jaa equivalent are called the Zun.

As I recall, there was a carving of a Namazu in one of the Rak'tika quests, implying they were at least around during the days of the Ronkan Empire. They were simply wiped out by the present.

Likewise, it would seem Fae did exist on the Source at one point, given Bismarck is a Fae on the First, and a creature of mythology for the Vanu Vanu (who are also Source only, along with the Gnath), implying he at one point existed on the Source to inspire that mythology. The Sea of Clouds possibly being the result of something similar to what we saw him do in Tempest.

EDIT: Perhaps also worth noting, there doesn't seem to be a Sea of Clouds or Churning Mists on the First, Sohm Al is entirely absent despite being fairly inland from the Flood. Entirely possible they fell during the Flood of course, but to me that does raise questions regarding the idea that the Floating Continent existed since before the First Calamity, and was subsequently broken up by Calamities. The Norvrandt map has roads, bridges even, leading towards what would be Idyllshire, so it's not like that region wasn't explored in their history, and I think a floating mountain would draw attention, more so with there being no Dragons guarding it on the First. The only floating islands we do see on the First are "man" made (Vauthry raising Mt Gulg) and, interestingly enough, Pixie related with Lyhe Mheg, implying that Pixies do have a habit for making floating islands, perhaps lending some weight to the idea that Bismarck (also a Fae) created the Sea of Clouds?

It's possible that fae still exist on the Source somewhere since there's at least three continents we have yet to explore; at the bare minimum Bismarck is/was around to inspire his primal version that the Vanu Vanu worship. But on the other hand it's pretty safe to say the Source's races missing on the First are extinct or never existed at all, since we've been pretty much everywhere that isn't the Empty.

I think too much of the 1st Shard has been destroyed to say if the races we don't see on the 1st Shard weren't actually there at some point in time. Other then races like the Ixal (which are Allagan creations) it's entirely possible they migrated to different parts of the 1st Shard and were simply swallowed up by the Flood.

We've already seen that Roegayden and Au Ra are in the location of Corethas (instead of Elezen), while the Kobald and Lalafel swapped places. There's also primarily Viera in the place the Black Shroud is instead of Elezen. And the Elezen were in the 1st Shard's verions of Mor Dhona. So there's already a precedent for different races settling in different locations on the 1st Shard compared to the Source.

So Moogles are the only race that got same name on the Source and the First? Does this mean anything?

There is an item obtained on the source called pixie earrings. I think they are a hint at fae being on the source.

Just as a theory...

It's possible that the First's balance favoring Light (even BEFORE the Ascians started messing around) could be why Pixies and Fuath form there, and do not on the first. Perhaps the heavy Light aspect causes Aether to flow more sluggishly there. Upon death, rather than quickly being absorbed into the Lifestream, the souls of children and drowned linger for a bit, giving them a chance to reform into new forms before dispersing.

That doesn't really explain why OTHER souls don't also linger and reform. Perhaps they do, and we just haven't encountered the sort of creatures that are thus produced.

If you go by another Final Fantasy game, moogles exist in the rift between worlds, so perhaps they came from the rift after the worlds were separated.

Pretty much this. We only know what we see. There could very well be First versions of goblins, ananta, vanu vanu, etc, and we just don't know about it because they were all gone long before we ever got there.

There is a sort of goblin on the First, hobgoblins specifically, although they don't seem to be a beastrace per se and just generic monsters fought on the beaches in Kholusia (also, like the Eorzean/Source goblins that take the appearence of FFXI's goblins, the First's hobgoblins actually take the form of FFI's goblin enemies instead). So whether the hobgoblins are a similar race to the Source's goblins (and just evolved differently) or are a completely different species is unclear (I'm liable to lean towards the later theory myself though).

Most of the fae races in Ill Mheg were specifically mentioned during the MSQ as having fled to there from elsewhere on the First due to the Flood (only the nu mou were native to the area, having been shown in Echo scenes to have been there during the heyday of the Voeburt kingdom at least), so in reverse it is highly likely a lot of 'missing' races from the Source that haven't yet been seen in the First were simply rendered extinct by the Flood.

A lot of that could be just put down to "it's a paralell world so things turned out differently there", but you also have to remember that most of the current day races in Eorzea on the Source have had constant cycles of migration and the rise and fall of successive nations due to the constant cycles of Astral and Umbral Eras, with Calamities serving as a repeating cultural reset button, none of which ever happened on the Shards, until the First was hit with the Flood of Light, and then everything there went to hell in a handbasket. So the races of the Source have long been moving around the world, settling nations that are often destroyed and replaced when a Calamity hits, something the First never had.

The Elfin Bow in the loorbook talks about how there was once an tall and slender race knowns as "Elves" that the Allagans warred with and made extinct I think. It's not known if they were related to the modern Elezens.

At the very least, it looks like some racial names were shared between the Source and the 1st, but due to various reasons the names changed between shards. Makes sense since they all had the same origins until the Hydaelyn split the world

My thought was that moogles can travel between shards and that's how they managed to keep the same name.

Or maybe they are also unsundered aliens who somehow managed to end up everywhere :D

I beliebe that the first is the «first» era of the source.
I mean that is how the Source atleast looked like before all the calamities happend and reshapen the continents and enviroments.
So there was indeed fea in source but not the exact same type that lives on the first.

I mean we know Bismarck was the one who created the Sea of Clouds, so this does add more to the concept of our Bismarck being a Fae and how it ties itself back to the First.

I think the Hobgoblins are very clearly meant to be the First's Goblins, not a separate race at all. They answer the age-old question (dating back to FFXI!) of just what a Goblin looks like with its mask off. (The answer? They look like classic FF goblins, of course!)

They're probably as surly as they are due to having to smell us stinky humans all the time. Kind of makes me want to be the entrepreneur who introduces breathing masks filled with fragrant herbs to the Hobgoblins. Totes should have been part of the Facet questlines, given we did the same for Amal'ja gauntlets and such. It could revolutionize human/Kobold relations - and become gillionaires in the process!

Well, there is old concept art from FFXI that supposedly shows a FFXI/FFXIV goblin without it's mask, which looks nothing like the 'classic' FFI style goblin, but I doubt the accuracy/canocity of the piece in question (the goblin in the image has glowing yellow eyes, where as goblins have large dark eyes (which could be seen on the 'goblin tinkerer' type goblins, the ones in silver armour whose helmets allowed their eyes to be visible.). Either way, if that image is to be believed, goblins are green-skinned, vaguely boar-like creatures, unlike the hobgoblins of the First (and FFI's goblins) that are rather ugly vaguely human-looking gnome-like creatures, not surprising given FFI was basically a Japanese clone of Dungeons and Dragons, but I digress...

Also, in regards to their masks, has it been mentioned anywhere here in FFXIV that the reason goblins wear their masks is the same reason they did in FFXI? (That is, they cannot stand the smell of the 'enlightened races' and so their masks contain odour filters to remove them.). I do know they do filter odours in any event, but I just don't know if they can't stand our scent! (It would explain how they can stand repugnant odours like that smelly cheese the Illuminati stole from Brayflox, their masks filter out the smell!). ;)

Actually, yes! There's a Gnath Beast Tribes repeatable quest in which you procure the herbs for the mask, and it explains why the Goblins need them. While Upworlder stench is not the only reason, it's one of them.

It was also confirmed via minions that Elezens, Miqo'te, and Lalafell were known by the equivalent FFXI race names, Elvaan, Mithra, and Tarutaru, at one point in their respective histories on the Source, so there are already examples of names changing in game.

Not necessarily; the descriptions for the mithra, tarutaru and elvaan minions in the minion guide had a very tongue-in-cheek tone (using terms like "supposed ancestor"), and hinted that might have just been a bit of fanservice referencing to FFXI without actually welding that to the lore, suggesting even in-universe that it was just a bit of joking around by a trolling Sharlayan scholar. Besides, hyur in the First might be known as humes like FFXI, but the other races there did not share FFXI names (mystel instead of mithra for instance).

So until SE officially confirms that the races of people in FFXIV originally had the FFXI race names, I'm taking that as just yet another callback to a past FF game without specifically making it part of the lore.

I'm interested in the fact that the Xaela of the First are from Voeburt; I'm pretty sure all of them were Xaela in the flashbacks. So where did the Raen hang out originally?

I don't think they're really 'Xaela' though as the various clan variations seen on the Source don't seem to exist on the First (or if they did, the Flood of Light probably rendered it moot).

Another species (I use the term species as 'race' isn't really appropriate with these things) that interestingly is stated in-game as to be not be native to the First (in other words, does not actually have a true counterpart race), but has only shown up recently there... is the 'poster child' monster for ShB, the gremlins!

Despite showing up frequently as annoying enemies in Norvrandt (especially in Lakeland), a Lakeland sidequest actually reveals that gremlins only started appearing shortly after the Crystal Tower materialized nearly a century before and, further more, were believed to have actually come from the Tower, suggesting the ones seen in the First are actually from the Source, that they hitched a ride in the Crystal Tower from the Eighth-Umbral Era Source timeline and are now well and truly ingrained in Lakeland, where they're regarded as pests (none the less because they have a bad tendency to desecrate graves in cemeteries, adding further misery to the already suffering inhabitants).

So, they're basically now the First's version of feral rabbits in Australia (only with a lot more bad language) ;) ....
