2B outfit "cutouts"

Now, I love the fact that we now have a Nier raid, and Nier outfits. So when I rolled on the coffer and won it tonight, I was stoked....until I put it on....

The cut outs were so....bad....both on the front and the back in contrast to skin tone, but the back can be hidden with hair, the front???? not so much...being bothered by it, and not wanting to completely burn the outfit (or stuff it into a retainer to never be seen again...) I fantasia'd
Problem solved! Or is it?

As someone who may or may not have a fantasia problem and realizes some races have a lot of different colors they can be, there has to be a better way to do the dress mesh cutouts no??? Maybe it's just me? T.T (I mention here I see it's a dress mesh cutout. Dress meshs like this tend to show off faint skin tone from underneath in some form. While hard to recreate in FF that way couldn't it have matched the dress a tad more then? Since 2B's does?)

Those cutouts aren't showing skin though. They're just patterns on the dress.

The only part showing skin is the boob window, and that matches your skin tone.

Correct but if you see the actual dress design from Nier it's more of a black mesh, so shouldnt it match the dress tone then?

That's 100% an oversight...Hopefully they will/can fix it.

They probably should have used the same stuff that's on Viera racial gear (the see-through cloth)

I'd probably agree to it being an oversight, since that skin tone is probably the most common. Even if it meant to be that color, it does look a bit odd on a darker character.

I noticed the same issue with Minfilia's white dress - there's a panel at the top that seems to be intended as transparent fabric with a hint of skin colour through it, but when trying it on my green-skinned Roegadyn character, it doesn't reflect that colour. And i believe the bunny tights have the same issue?

It seems like it could be a running problem that they can't make things take on shades of skintone.

They do seem to be able to add sheer fabric though, so I wonder where the limitations are. Does it only work for loose drapes? Harder to implement for tight-fitting gear? Maybe it has to be a separate layer above the character's skin and ends up too bulky or something.

Try putting it on a Male character and see how bad it maybe :p

PS I see SE is finally giving players more Multi-gender outfits now.

It's just joining the club full of armor that is known to have a portion that just wont dye, or dye poorly but serves as a huge focal point and it makes the whole outfit not worth glamouring to something.

This outfit is very pretty, but I think that the "cutout" patterns should have just been black or grey, especially since there are so many different possible skin tones in the game. Alternatively, they could have made it so the "cutouts" switched to black when dyed like the white parts of the sleeves and gloves do. The tights have the same skin tone problem at least for grey skin tones (it seems to change to fit human ones) but there are many other tights in game that can be used instead that are similar that is isn't as annoying.

This is actually kind of an embarrassing oversight for a glamour outfit that people have been eagerly anticipating as one of the biggest rewards from this raid series. It feels like they took a modelling shortcut when it came to making the upper chest window and either were in such a rush they didn't test it on anything except white skin, or expected people would somehow not notice.

I'm not even particularly sure if it will be fixed at all, because in order to make see-through cloth (like in the starter Viera chestpiece) they need to remake the model so that the character's skin is actually rendered under the cloth, and then add a semi-transparent texture layer on top of that skin. In the 2B outfit, there's nothing rendered under the flesh-colored cut-outs whatsoever, so fixing this issue means remaking significant parts of the model and of the model's texture, which is the kind of work Square Enix has never done when it comes to models that are already in game: There's models with texture bugs (for example, Lightning's haircut on Miqo'te has messed up specularity that makes the back of your head look like a cracked egg) that have gone unfixed since A Realm Reborn.

Because of this, the 2B outfit, despite being one of the most eagerly anticipated raid rewards for this expansion, will likely look absolutely strange forever unless your character has a light skin color similar to the actual character of 2B. This is terrible, and what's truly most concerning is that Square Enix has a pattern of considering gear models that are already in game to be a done deal, meaning that this game, despite supporting a variety of skin colors that include ones that don't even exist in reality, will forever have this crossover outfit look immersion-breaking for an enormous number of players.

See this is what I was curious about since they can add sheer, we've seen it with Viera tribal gear. At least with this dress since it is such a large focal point, I'm surprised no attempt at all was made to make it "blend" in at the very least with the dress color. You are right on the Minifilia dress however. With that dress though I just assumed it was because we also couldn't dye it. But after dying 2B's and seeing it still there....

The bunny tights do as well, but its the same as those tights you see with 2B's if you take a look at my pictures. It's just you can hide them a bit more so its less obvious, the issue mostly being, it's near impossible to hide the chest.

You know, as ridiculous as it looks on say, a Hrothgar (I had a really good laugh at that one......) I'm all for it.

Like I said overall I love the dress, and I don't normally hate on gear but this one just had something I couldn't ignore...and thankfully I'm not the only one, so hopefully it is an issue they will at least perhaps fix in the future. Until then, I will be a very grumpy pale moon cat XP

It honestly gives some grounding to a long-term suspicious I've had that they barely test art assets when they put them in the game. It could very well be that their production pipeline is such that by the time a model made by the art team is in the game, sending it back to them to fix glaring issues is impossible due to deadlines... which I would be willing to understand if they actually fixed gear once its already in the game in a latter patch, but I feel like unless people raise a huge stink about the 2B chestpiece, it will simply go unfixed permanently. I would've preferred if they withheld this glamour until 5.3 or even 5.5 if they were going to take shortcuts that harm player customization like this, nobody should have to fantasia their character's skin color just to wear an outfit.

The more I look at it, like on 2P, the more I think definitely oversight. It looks like they tried to pretend it was a bit see-through, with a cheap texture. Like in a PS2 game or something. Rather than do like with the Viera racial gear. It's almost the same color as her skin, but slightly darker. Those are for sure meant to be faux cut outs.

I agree with the production aspect. I'd like to think people would make a stink about it enough, but a lot of people tend to run the skin tones that are close to that color, so I'm just not sure if this will happen. Sometimes I do feel like an oddball with the skin choices I pick XP

I also agree with being ok witholding the glamour. No one should have to fantasia at all to at least make it look less ridiculous looking. Just because I could fantasia, doesn't mean every one else can (or want too), and they shouldn't have to suffer through it or not enjoy an otherwise well made glamour that's extremely popular. Especially with all the sacrifices that have to be made to the RNG gods just to get it! XD

Taking shortcuts or a "one size fits all" approach isn't new in the game. A few other people have mentioned the bunny tights. Not only does your skin tone not show on them, but Au Ra scales on the legs completely disappear. The Au Ra collectible NPC in Eulmore has actually had this corrected, as both her grey skintone and white scales can be seen through her fishnets. Au Ra scales also disappear with the new Neir tights. There is also the general lack of accounting for tails in designs. It is something I've gotten used to working around it for glamours in the game, but I wish they applied a band-aid to the 2B costume top that better fit all races even if it wasn't quite as accurate to Neir Automata.

FFXIV updates quite regularly compared to many other MMOs, and as you said the production schedule is probably extremely tight but as I play a race/skintone combo that gets the short end of the stick frequently in can be a bit frustrating.

I'd like to think this is an unacceptable oversight for most players, both EN and JP, and an embarrassment for the Dev team. It very much looks like it's supposed to take on the skin tone of the player wearing it. If it's not supposed to, then they should push it to a color that doesn't look flesh toned.

We'll see what happens, but for the games most ambitious crossover to date, the launch of their latest alliance raid and, for the centerpiece reward of the patch, it's pretty cringey.

I think it's an oversight while also being a tad bit lazy... You can see it on the legs as well, where the mash lace-like material is just colored in to *look* like mesh. They've used transparency-like cloth before in FFXIV. I have a dark-skinned character and a lack of funding needed to buy Fantasias on the dime. So hopefully this can be fixed by the time I get that coffer... (Still grinding for that thing, Square! Give it to me!)

I haven't got the glamour myself yet, but I'm curious on how it changes Au Ra scale legs. Anyone have a screen?

It's been accepted as a bug, so there you all go.

The leggings also have this issue as well. Kind of a shame for those dark-skinned toons (myself being blue xaela au ra). Hope it gets looked at/fixed.

The fact that it wasn't sent to that section right away means that they are gonna do something about it. Not sure what though - taking closer look at the dress, that is part of the design, but it being cutout would be a nice touch.

If you look at 2P in any of the other media she has been depicted (such as her introduction in Soul Calibur VI), those segments are her skin color, so I think they're meant to be semi-transparent cloth rather than part of the dress's design.

We don't know yet, they are investigating.

It will then be moved either to "Confirmed/Planning to Address" or "Working as Intended".

If anything, I think its probably just an issue with how the skin was made. Someone didnt set a transparency correctly in a field or painted it a skin color they thought it was supposed to be. Itll probably get addressed cause frankly, its a pretty big "Oops, that looks atrocious", even by the worst of FFXIV standards. It doesnt scream professionalism, and I think the devs know it.

They aren't cutouts. They are a pattern on the dress.
