Besides taking rings to Mordor.
Popotoes.... po po toes... boil em mash em stick em in a stew
I am thinking they are better linkshells.
Pretty much this, though it begs the question what use Linkshells will be after they're implemented. Frankly they seem designed to act as an in game way for things like discord communities to coordinate. While the max member amount is still too small for something like, say, the Balance Discord to have everyone on it, it's stilll a huge step up in terms of keeping everyone in one centralized in game chat while they play.
You aren't able to chat in Fellowships. This is strictly an organizational thing that I suspect will receive much more use and praise in Japan than anywhere else. They seem to like this sort of stuff, which is why the Companion app was more warmly received. In NA/EU, we have discord. So these types of additions are largely pointless. Personally... I think it's a big waste of resources but I'll reserve judgment for when I actually see it.
they should probably still work just fine to organize stuff like crossworld hunt trains, weekly rival-wings runs ect
Or finding a static members!
What we wanted was a FC alliance system, what we got well of course something entirely different than what we have been asking for......
It's basically a way to spread information to up to 1,000 players in-game. Think of a Fellowship as a hashtag, everyone subscribed to the hashtag (i.e. a member of the Fellowship) will get all the announcement made to that hashtag, and there's one Fellowship comment board for members to leave short comments.
It serves a different purpose to Linkshells and Free Companies.
For example a player who runs a coffee shop in-game could create his/her own Fellowship and people interested in such interaction can join it, and the player would be able to announce things like "closed on Friday" or "special event next Saturday". Members can see these announcements easily in-game and doesn't have to feel the social pressure to respond or to actually attend.
Or a streamer could create his own in-game Fellowhsip to announce in-game activities. It's also got a survey function that provides for up to 5 options.
Unlike Linkshells, because it doesn't provide a chat room, anyone can easily create and manage a Fellowship without having to watch the chat all the time and respond.
When they first started talking about it I was excited over the prospect of moving some of the hunting discords back into the game... but after the explanation slides it sounds like a less useful discord channel ^^;
They help you take the One Ring to the fires of Mt. Doom.
Personally I will be using fellowships in two ways (or more probably!)
1. I belong to a community that still runs Eureka - BA and this may help consolidate the community directly from the game (we run off of discord atm).
2. I also belong to an RP community that has really wanted to be able to announce events across servers when particular RP events are happening. Fellowships sounds like a perfect fit for us!
That being said, it does seem like LS and Fellowships should sorta be combined. Maybe they will do this in the future?
I don't have any use for them myself. About the only interaction I have with other players in the game is helping kill things announced in my hunt linkshell, and running dungeons. I may talk to a FC member if they ask me something, but that's about it.
dot hack bbs?
I didn't understand the point either; they just seemed like neutered linkshells. Anything that people would use these things for (primarily hunts, I would imagine) there probably already exist not only linkshells but dedicated Discord channels for, both of which allow... actual direct chatting.
Its purpose is to reinvent discord :)
To announce an event in game to a specific community. For example roleplaying events. Say you shall host a RP event in three weeks at a specific time, then you can post it there and everyone who are interested in this will know about it so discord doesn't have to be used.
I am seeing a value in the concept.
I understand it this far from how a podcast covered it so if this is correct:
1000 member max
Can set it to be open joinable or apply/invite
Can set up polls
Message board shows last 100 posts
Then it looks great for themed grouping.
Roleplayers will love it. Form a RP event, list it, and folks in the fellowship can join or not.
Casual raiders will love it. Raiding in FFXIV is either the duty finder or “post your logs and your tax returns in your application and as a casual raid we raid 8 nights a week, 25 hours a day.”
- a fellowship might work for those hardcores that claim to be casual... but more for actual casuals. Use it to find semi-statics of people who are not heavily experienced and can commit to so many nights but will put in effort when they do go. Leave it open and people come and go.
It’s basically a discord in game.

An in-game version of this.
It's finally nice to see.
I know my FC and several others are planning to make a fellowship so we can easily see each other's events and have a forum, two things discord doesn't have.
It's a place to ship your fellows.
Now there's a blast from the past... FC alliances... Something Yoshida talked about adding way back in 2.1... Still nothing by 5.1... Perhaps 8.1 will finally see it added?
Jokes aside, I hope Fellowships has a FC tag option, because then it can essentially just be used as a FC alliance system; Make a FC Fellowship and invite multiple FCs as an alliance.
yea but lets be honest, the only reason to even have an alliance is the 24mans. and they aren't even hard enough to warrant putting one together. (efficiency for drops at most imo) It would speed up some organized stuff but you will always have to overbook for something to account for noshow's. While I can see some value in it. I hope resources go back to other things when this comes out as I feel its going to be a waste. People will use it for a little and then get tired of waiting for responses. The PF will still trump this message board because of speed because people will get tired of making a time for something and then having to use the PF to find fill in's.
in the end this is going to be wayyy too slow for people that are always "PULL WHOLE DUNGEON PLS"... it looks nice though? they should have just updated the PF to allow for us to put up an alliance. Would have been much better use of resources to be able to recruit a 24man via pf. Ahh well, one can dream. Grats to the RP'rs for that's all this will be good for.
