Anyone else think that they should do away with automatically showing full maps for areas?
FFXI had the system where you'd have to quest for a map, I loved that. Finding, collecting and hunting for maps is another great reason to level up and gain that feeling of 'progression'.
Other MMOs see maps slowly reveal as you venture into a new area for the first time. You can only see the areas you've actually been to. We all know this. It gives a further sense of accomplishment and adventure.
In addition, i think we should be able to turn the mini map off (can we do this already, I don't know? ? ?)
I find myself staring at the mini map on long journeys instead of appreciating the beautiful landscapes.
Anyone ever used a sat nav in their car to get places rather than just find it by trial and error?
The sat nav will get you there quicker, sure, but its the journey and the path that counts. You miss all the beauty on the way, plus you'd never remember the directions going a second time.
Personally, I like to find things my own way.
So, I advocate a toggle for the mini map, and all maps except starting areas needing a quest.
What say ye?

I don't think they've mentioned anything about that. Though I'm sure in 2.0 someone will design a UI mod to hide it, there's enough immersion fans around to justify it.

Having a "Fog of War" over the maps sounds like it would be really cool. I also liked XI's "buy your map" but for certain places like Temple of Ugglakamakihagamataga, SSG, the various mines, etc I never actually bought a map. I just ran through the places so many times that I just memorized the zone. It would kind of make sense too because irl you don't (well, shouldn't) need a map to get to common places you go because you have a mental map. I'm certain our seasoned adventures have a mental capacity high enough to do the same :P

Well, even with a FOW, if you took the wrong path the first time it would stay as part of your map. So you would just know to find a new path you havent explored yet XD. For 2.0 they could do it node based, ie if you have Emerald Moss, or Wyrmking's Perch, it makes that region lit up. (For those of us who've been playing, we'd have some/all "map"s unlocked, but new players would have to hunt around in the dark until they found an aethryte to light up the map.
Besides, 2.0 Black Shroud will not be NEARLY as horrible as current Black Shroud. -

I would like to earn my maps but not hinder people just starting out so common areas that you would expect your character to be familiar with can have automatic maps like starter towns and zones. Go ahead and let your journal help you pinpoint where you are supposed to be if you need the extra help.
Further out it would be nice to have fog of war and/or purchased/quested/coffer maps. Would love it if the further from civilization you go the harder it would be to obtain a map.
I say this as someone who can easily get lost with a map. -

Mobs that probably can 1-2 shot you and you don't even know how they aggro. Killing weaker mobs just to see what they drop or what abilities they use. That is half the fun :DQuote:
