There are decent mentors out there. It's too bad that the nublets have to sift through a mountain of crappy crown cravers just to find em.
More than half? That means there's at least 40% who are good...
I'm actually okay with those numbers.
I'd say about 9.5/10 mentors are bad - attitude and play. At this point they should just close the whole program.
The mentor bogeyman strikes again.
The mentor crown is a joke that most people don't take seriously.
What's stopping people from falsely giving low ratings to every mentor?
The knife cuts both ways. I completely agree that MEAN mentors are bad, however to the "unhelpful" mentors comment, I would ask you... did you ask for help? Many have learned by now to not provide unsolicited advice. It's also worth nothing that not everyone is going to know everything. If a MNK asks me how to optimize their rotation, or if someone asks me to go over the mechanics of Alexander 2-1, I'd be hard pressed to provide an answer. I rarely play MNK, and I'm not intimately familiar with Alex 2-1.
My experience as a mentor is that, back when I attempted to give unsolicited advice, I'd generally get a quite bitchy response. You know the ones. "You don't pay my sub," "I don't care," "Keep your advice to yourself," etc. As such, while I will happily run things as a mentor from time to time, I will keep my mouth shut unless asked, and after a wipe I will ask something along the lines of "Does anyone have any questions?" which usually doesn't garner any response. If no one asks for help, then I'll assume my "mentor" duty is simply to be a competent party member.
I will also say that if you queued into an Extreme primal duty, it is not rude for a mentor to tell you that you should be doing the content via the party finder. Though I will agree that it's bad if they tell you in a mean way or if they exit immediately without even trying.
With that said, I completely agree that the mentor system could be improved, but I can't think of any solution that would satisfy everyone. My best idea is a sort of "apprentice" system where newbies could apply for an apprenticeship and a mentor would be found and assigned to them. These two would (hopefully) work together a lot, and as a bonus, it could help establish a sense of community and/or friendships.
There's an easy solution to all of this.

THE MENTOR OF DARKNESS!
You can report someone for being mean. No meanies allowed in FFXIV.
Mentor system is a currently a joke and in need of complete overhaul.
PvE Mentor don't for example don't even require someone to have completed a single Savage.
What is such a mentor gonna teach to others? The mechanics of Sastasha?
They just shouldn't offer rewards for it. Leave it only as a convenient way for people who want help to meet/communicate with people who want to help, and even if 90% of the mentors leave it'll still be a better system.
I think we've got a toxic mentee problem.
I see more anti mentor toxicity, if you want help, ask it from the mentors who are in mentor chat and not from random people who are using their mentor icon.
This would be ridiculously abused. Given all the hate that people have for mentors in this community, any mentor who isn't a perfect human being in every way and completely flawless in their play in every single duty would get flooded with bad ratings by bitter people who want to maliciously attack them. Simply wearing the crown would make you the target of this kind of abusive behavior.
... but all that happens if you "fail" is you get stripped of the crown.
I agree if there was any sort of "ding" system for being a mentor it'd have to have regulations on it and balances so a guild couldn't just hammer someone with reports (only 1 report per run with a mentor on a roulette when they have their crown out or some such) and a high threshhold or maybe several strikes needed with slowly progressing punishments (no mentor roulette for a week)...
But the system is already all kinds of messed up with people only fulfilling it for the reward. Newbies need people they know they can ask questions without getting harshed upon themselves.
.. if you don't want to help why do you have the icon on?
There's a lot Toxic Mentors in this game, i left Novice Network because of that, many elitist Mentors that never interacts with chat not even to say "Hi" and loves to ban people without any relevant reason.
At the beggining for ShB i was talking with another mentor in NN about GNB skills, a Randon mentor said that wasn't the place to talk about game mechanics and we should send PM to each other because NN was made for questions and nothing more, well, there's no place in game or Lodestone that says that NN is made for ONLY and EXCLUSIVELY answer novice questions, and who socialize or talk about game mechanics is bannable. The funny thing is that 5 min later the same mentor started to talk about a "Pizza Bob" that he bought last night, so i can't talk about game stuff in NN but he can talk about Pizza?.
To be honest, most of Mentors, like over 90% of them do not know nothing, do not help anyone, do not answer any question or anything that the purpose should be, they are mentors only to talk in NN, to get Mentor Rolettes Achievments or just because Mentor Icon is "cute" to use. Are useless abd arrogant people in their most.
But some people that aren't mentors are quiet abusive too, last week i did a Rolette as AST against Lakshmi, everyone forgets to use stance at least once in your life especially in Sync content that reset your buffs when you start it, so the other healer started to scold me with offensive words saying that he was healing alone ( as if AST can't heal at all without stance ) and that mentors these days sucks and etc, i just reported him right after that fight for harassment.
Mentors are human at the end of the day and they can be jerks just like anyone else. Don't put too much faith in someone with a crown, you'll find those without crowns can be helpful perhaps even more so.
The burger king crown is a joke. Just replace it with something else
Half of the mentors are clowns ὃ⍜ὅ
I wouldnt be surprised if some mentors have gone toxic, the amount I get screeched at for providing friendly advice is insane. "You play your class I'll play mine", "Im having fun what does it matter" "You dont pay my sub"
That's what happens when you put a mount (reward) behind something so silly.
I have on the mentor crown, but I've encountered too much backlash for saying anything or just for merely existing with that damned crown, so I keep my mouth shut. If you ask about something, or if we wipe to a mechanic, I will speak up, but otherwise I'm going to assume you're on an alt and know what you're doing.
Let talk about new players that tell us good mentors to "stfu" or "It my sub, I'll play my way." or just the classic, ignore what being said and just run in head long as we wipe.
Used to be a mentor, I let the status drop when I came back to the game.
Stop pointing fingers and saying that mentors are the only toxic players. New people alike can be just as toxic.
Unless you can show proof of a Mentor doing this in a dungeon run....With the way you've been acting in this thread I'd be more inclined to believe you're blowing things out of proportion at this rate.
And besides, there are assholes in every community, this is nothing new.
Even I'm over here like:

After reading this page.
Or you can just be a mentor without giving a damn about the system. There are hundreds of mentors who help just as there are hundreds of non-mentors who help too. The only difference between the two is that one is perceived with unrealistic expectations and the other is still told to shut up when it comes to giving advice. I'll let you decide which is which.
I was going to say something worthy and helpful, but instead, I'm just going to eat popcorn and watch this thread burn.
It literally says, 'Reply with Quote' right underneath the post.
Edit: Gosh darn it, I guess this could be considered helpful. Bah, can't do anything right.
I don’t really have an issue of people taunting me or discrediting me because I am a mentor. However, I do have issues with leafs and flowers using NN as a random discussion place and people complain to mentors all the time why nobody is being helped. If mentors try to step in to police the chat, we get told we don’t know what we’re talking about and what we’re saying is fine.
It’s a two way street.
