Is the White Mage job story enjoyable?

I've been trying to decide between White Mage and Scholar, and even though I like the overall aesthetic of Scholar a bit more I'm thinking I'll be going with White Mage because I prefer their reactionary style of healing. Shields have never really been my thing as a healer, I like fixing health bars. However, I've heard that the White Mage job storyline isn't really the best. That's nothing that will stop me from playing the class but I am just curious about it.

Imo it's one of the weakest story line, at least the 30-50 part.

I actually find them both to be rather mediocre. I will say however that Scholar's story was a complete snooze fest while White mage had some kind of...excitement? I don't know, go for the one that makes you feel good or something.

CNJ 1-30 is the only remotely interesting storyline. 30-50 isn't... terrible... but it isn't terribly interesting either. It's all downhill from there. The final 80 quest felt like an insult it was so awful.

I normally really prefer reactive healing also, but for some reason I ended up liking scholar better than white mage in this game. So, like, try both and don't rule anything out.

As for the quests...the white mage ones are definitely kind of boring. The 1-30 ones are okayish. I also didn't mind the 60-70 ones, but I think I'm the only one.

I found the scholar ones better because they have a lot of the Nym-vs-Mhach-vs-Amdapor history involved. But it may depend on how much you like lalafells, because basically every ten levels that questline gets a new potato with a new potato name. The astrologian ones were really good, though, just because of Leveva's attitude toward Jannequinard and Kyokuho.

Finally, thank you for posting this thread, because it reminded me I haven't done any of the 80 healer job quests.

Not gunna lie, the 80 quests in general are awful and some of the titles are even worse.

I've not done Scholar passed 54 but neither of the quests interested me, if I had to pick one though it would be White Mage.

Do you think you could elaborate on why you ended up liking Scholar better? Also I do definitely plan to try them both, I was just more trying to pick one to go with first.

Of all the 80 quests I've done so far, WHM is easily the worst by a wide margin. The rest have been mediocre but inoffensive. The 80 SCH quest was legit good and actually felt relevant and rewarding.

Someone wants me to be even more of a verbose windbag? MISSION ACCEPTED.

I guess the reason I've always preferred reactive healing is that I have a slow reaction time. So if the boss starts casting Big Damage Ability™, and I can either shield before it goes off or heal afterward, I figured afterward would be better. But in practice I found that scholar shields last a long time, and there's enough mana to just put them up whenever. So what actually happened with scholar is that I had more time to react, because instead of healing right before or right after the damage, I could heal any time before the damage. Plus my stress was lessened because the shields made the health bars stay higher. And if you do fall behind, scholar has some good emergency heals---resource-gated and less powerful than their WHM equivalents, but more flexible.

Of course, there was also the fact that I didn't like white mage lore that much. I swear if I'd seen any more rainbows and sunshine I'd have had to find a kitten somewhere and strangle it.

As for astrologian, if you were wondering---the healing feels very simple, but effective as long as you can manage mana properly. The complexity comes from the card minigame.

Basically, I'd say that for me, WHM feels like doing a simple task, SCH feels like doing a complicated task, and AST feels like juggling multiple simple tasks.

Haven't done the lv 80 SCH quest, but in general, I enjoyed the SCH quests more. I did actually like the SB WHM quests, though. The lv 80 WHM quest, however, was...bad. Just...bad. Like...why am I doing this? I'm the warrior or light/darkness, why am I bothering with this dumb thing?!?!

I enjoy playing WHM more than SCH, though :P

WHM story quests are all pretty terrible. We go from being communers with nature to being environmental health and safety (don't bury your tainted meat on my watch, lady) and then become child protective services.

The WHM story is kind of bland and boring. Almost sterile, even. It's mildly interesting in the Stormblood section, but by and large, one of the weaker job story lines. What hurts it most, I think is the lack of identity and cohesion. You're jumping around doing different things each expansion, without much of a tying thread. You're not really bettering yourself (everyone considers you a master WHM/CNJ at lv 30), you're not really mentoring anyone, and you're not really working towards a goal. "The elementals are out of whack. Go fix it." "Here's this child. Help them."

SCH is okay. The lv 80 quest is a decent conclusion to the arc, but can be a bit dry if you don't like the subject matter. They kept to one theme, The Nymian Plague, and that works well to its favor.

AST is pretty decent. Haven't done post SB story, but the characters are a bit more engaging than either SCH and WHM's characters. It seems to have more of an emotional depth to it than SCH and WHM stories.

Personally I was disappointed in the story for whm. White Magic and Amdapor has some pretty interesting elements to it that I wanted to know more about but it's all thrown out the window in favor of... being a healer.

30-50 was decent enough, I wish there was a moment or two where the quest giver was like "I'm putting alot of trust in you with this power," especially with the quest you learned Holy.

50-60 I liked the least, I liked the antagonist but the "learn your spells from cleaning taint" felt weak to me.

60-70 was meh to me as well, It wasn't a bad story and did like seeing that certain someone again, but again it wasn't what I wanted out of the storyline.

The 80 quest I did like well enough. But ultimately my issue with the whm questline is less what happens and more what they didn't cover that I wish they did.

Eh....no. The 60 to 70 wasn't too bad though.

The Level 80 AST quest focuses around mainly Leveva. There was a status update on how Geomancy is taking off again, but it mainly was how Leveva was acting odd which lead Kyokuho believing it to be love related (likely from the fact he kinda has a hard time hiding the fact he loves her) only to get his unfounded assertion crushed. She was having trouble trying to figure out how to tie Astrology and Geomancy together and when she had tried to gaze upon the start she was on (like geomancy does) she was blinded and could not discern anything. So your character shares their experiences and show her the bond with the astral energies of that nightless sky of endless light. Showing how to connect with the stars even when there was no visible stars. Which gives Leveva some inspiration on how to break through her problem. She also makes it clear that her sworn love is Astrology to Kyokuho's face which leaves him momentarily despondent before he remembers he has a job to do and rushes out to get back to his students.

whm quest line is one of those quest lines that make you want to slap an npc and idc if she is a kid. I really just wanna slap her.

I play a Fem Roe at maximum height and it made my Scholar quest super awkward when I had to party up with my Lallafel Warrior to defeat the bad guys. I tried to take the situation seriously but it just lost all sense of urgency when I would accidentally step on the tiny Tank.

I can't even recall any WHM quests... Except it involves helping children every single time... That's how much they bore me I basically skip reading through 80 levels.

I think I might actually give Scholar a shot now instead. It's aesthetic always appealed to me more (I love book wielding spell casters), everyone here seems to agree the job story is better, and if it's shields are actually last a decent time it isn't as un-reactive as I assumed. (I come from WoW where by the time I started playing it the only real shield was Disc Priests Power Word and it only lasted like 15s which felt too short for my liking)

Im lvl 63 on my WHM and i didnt find any part of its job story interesting at all,maybe 50-60 with the Lancer chick was ok but judging from the Stormblood lvl 60 quest and the lvl 63 seems 60-70 is weak af

been AST since HW and I'm not 80 yet, so I must agree with many here, I think I just slept through the WHM story quest. SCH's at least taught me why I shouldn't cross a tonberry. xD

The 30-50 quests never made sense to me tbh.

Raya-O: We're in a race against time to heal the spirits of the wood before they destroy us all!. To help us, we'll teach you the forbidden art of white magic, which would take a considerably longer amount of time than just asking our older sister an hour off her very busy schedule.

Then there's the 50-60, which is....mediocre, with little to no effort put in it.

This Auri girl is contaminating the spirits of nature because...reasons, then you befriend her, also because reasons. There's also this other chick who resents the Padjal for never actually doing anything (which is true).

60-70 is actually a nice change.

You're basically the "bad guy" breaking the rules for the sake of not destroying a family. Also, Sylphie from the 1-30 questline comes back.

its story about tress and girl who want to heal but don't want to dps :D (WHM)
SCH is story about blight or sickness w/e ...

the white mage job itself is enjoyable (arguablely the best healer at the moment). its engaging and fun to play especially in dungeons
that being said, in my opinion (i main tank, and second WHM) the storyline is really dull and uninteresting. Even the job gauge is boring and uninspired

The level 80 quest was cute in my opinion :)

Edit: It also showed the character growth of the NPCs.

CNJ 1-30: A lot of lore about Gridanian conjury, and a nice bit of character piece with a healer who ONLY wants to heal and won't accept the elemental's aether in casting as a result.
WHM 30-50: Essentially an expansion to the above, showing how those allowed to be WHM's fit into Gridania's society, and a little bit of why White Magic forbidden.
WHM 50-60: You investigate some Auri necromancer's taint.
WHM 60-70: A look into how padjal work and more about gridania's culture, as told through the story of a woman who hid her child away because the kid's padjal and therefore would be taken from her.
WHM 80: A short slice of life piece checking in on the healer, necromancer (now a conjurer), and young padjal from the previous questlines.

If you like lore, everything except the 50-60 and 80 is alright. 80 is... mediocre unless you really got to caring about the healer or the padjal girl, but even then it focuses on the necromancer who they have to try and build a character for out of nothing in a 5 minute long quest. 50-60, where said necromancer is from, is one of the worst quest series in the entire game imo.

SCH, on the other hand, pretty much is a course on Nym. If you want to learn more about Nym, you will be satisfied. If you don't care at all, I hope you grow to like Alka Zolka or Surito Carito.
