So they did, originally, recreate bazaars in a roundabout way. In 1.0, retainers were available to station permanently in the Market Wards. Great in concept, right? Except there was not enough room in the hallway to load all the character models, and you had to click each character to see what they had, because there was no actual market board.
Part of the patches to 1.x that Yoshi P implemented included a proper search function in the market wards, but a hundred zombies afk and flickering as they loaded on and off is a lot less appealing than the Jeuno markets were.
By 2.0 the market ward concept was scrapped, and retainers became invisible. They added back the ability to display retainers outside of houses, with the ability to browse things for sale, back when housing was added.
Oh for the love of all that's good, no. It's great from a nostalgia sort of sense, but spending an hour going through over a hundred bazaars looking for the 1 item you want at a price that was fair, or worse, shopping around for the best price, was horrific.
They had it in 1.0 and scrapped it for the market board system which is better in every way. Sure it could use some changes, but personal bazaars are one thing that should be listed under "good bye and good riddance"
FFXI veteran here, I do miss some stuff from XI too, sneaking due some monsters aggro by sound/sight/smell etc, having to actually walk to get places, music, summoner with full model avatars, hard to acomplish level breaks due Maat fights... but BAZZARDS???! NO please no.
Want this game to go back to RO era?

I enjoyed ffxi, I've been paying it since last year but omg is it a better game, the sense of danger around every corner, jobs really stood from each other, the story....I wish for ffxi remastered
I miss Rolanmart back in 11. Fun just checking on what people had up for sale. Then there was the time that Simurgh glitched out and chased a person all the way to the entrance of Jeuno and killed all the people who were AFK or had mules up in Rolanmart. A GM had to be called to kill the damn thing to reset it.
Yes but no, FFXIV 1.0 also had player bazaar, so it just looks like yet another generic automatic answer about how 1.0 was bad, even if it's out of subject.
So, to get back on topic : what's the point of player bazaar.
In FFXI, a lot of strong equipments could be traded, no "bind on equip", high value items kept their high value for years, and there was a high tax for putting an item on AH. Selling and buying was thus much more important and an actual part of the game.
Also it wasn't possible to just teleport anywhere anytime, so selling the right items at the right place was also an important aspect.
Player bazaar in FFXIV would be pointless because the AH tax is negligible, the actual use value of items in FFXIV is very low, and the AH is always one teleport away. Trading is very superficial and is in the game "just because".
you think you do but you don't
People's memories and desires are not wrong just because they aren't yours, pal. Maybe say something nice for once.
On topic: I also miss FFXI, for a lot of the stuff people described, but I assume a lot of those things were scrapped in favor of more user friendly and QoL stuff, like some other people mentioned.
I've always been under the assumption that retainers in 1.0 were the result of somebody at SE seeing Rolanmart and thinking it was our preferred method of buying and selling things and not just a way to dodge taxes. And then they realized they could charge players to hire an NPC to stand around afk for them.
They're fun, but with more than a handful of traders, you need an interface to deal with item finding anyway, and if you have the interface, you can tie it to something that DOESNT cause massive server load issues.
Even games that still use bazaars figured out the best way to deal with it was to let you buy remotely and automatically send purchases to a mailbox / mail npc / your bags.
I would have loved to see it
They do have sound/sight/blood agro coded into XIV, most just ride their mount every where so don't really notice it anymore, especially since level factors into it as well.
The other crazy thing about player bazaars, some cheeky and daring merchants would also go out and sell things in unexpected locations. High traffic areas people might need sneak/invis consumables? Check. Leveling party locations where someone might have run out of or forgot their food? Check. Gathering locals where one might want some more tools or get rid of mats not after? Check. BCNM or other NM pop locations where certain items could be very handy? Check.
But I certainly don't miss sifting through thousands of bazaars to maybe find one item. They were useful for selling, but not so much for buying.
Rolanberry Fields memories...
I wholeheartedly agree. That is one game that left you with a sense of accomplishment completing even the most simple of task. Like making it to Selbina at night in the dunes.
alas, there are somethings we'll never see in XIV. Like Bazaars, actual summons, a bluemage that isn't limited, refresh, gear swaps mid combat, leveling down (could you imagine trials and raids lol), reraise just to name a few.
On a related note, while they weren't great, what I really miss about the bazaaring retainers is the ability to purchase any amount you wanted instead of the amount decided by the seller. I just need one ore, not 99, damn it!
In EQ it was the East Commonlands tunnel that was our major person-to-person trading hub. Then Planes of Power brought about the Bazaar, where you could keep your toon afk in trader mode. But even they eventually introduced offline trading and the ability to buy from anywhere in the game. It's just not a system that really works in modern MMOs.
Last time they introduced FFXI-like mechanics, we got Eureka.
Be careful what you wish for on that cursed monkey paw.
1.0 auction retainer market was crazy...but kinda fun... it did suck though overall. 1.0 also let us put items for sell on our player like ffxi did that was nice..
We had Bazaars in 1.x! I was pretty bummed when they took them away. It's like...why take things away ; ; Wouldn't mind if they brought them back.
It wasn’t about checking hundred of bags for one item. It had more use than just that. You could sell things for lower than market board/AH and not have to worry too much about undercutting.
You could bring food for your raid group in bazaar. And let them buy it off you.
It was more like a flea market I guess
I played on carbuncle back then. There was this Elvaan guy, Ascii. He had a bazaar in selbina. He was there at all hours all the time, selling some low level spells and food.
I played hardcore for like.. 6 to 8 years and he was always there.
Checked back the other week to see if he was still there, but it looks like he's finally packed up and turned in..
Sleep well sweet Prince.
Sounds like he was just a blotting program.
Deep inside I'd like to think that he had hopes and Dreams like the rest of us though.
Like, he enjoyed his simple life as a selbina trader. :D
Bazaar? Hard pass.
More visible comment section? Yes please!
The bazaar with alts/mules that the original poster mentioned in FFXI was not a replacement for the auction house/ market board. It was a nice player driven addition to it.
I think it would be a good thing to have the freedom to do something in addition to FFXIVs market board.
No one here saying they miss the old FFXI bazaar is wanting to scrap the current market board.
It was a fun additional feature that someone could browse through when bored.
I would like to see a bazaar option in the future of ffxiv. Back when I was playing Everquest when it was still the popular mmo (late 90's/early 00's) I used to keep my character logged into the bazaar selling items. I am not sure if a similar system to what EQ had would work in ffxiv, but it would cool to see.
Unless its drastically different...dont we already have a Bazaar in Ul'Dah?
