Twice now, well actually I suppose you could say three times now I've left NN, because of the toxicity of the chat. First was in 2017 when I first started playing, then I left and went back to WOW in 2018. Then I came back April of 2019, I don't even think I was in NN a month before leaving.I then asked to rejoin as a lot of the times when I'm online no one else is in the FC, well I got tired of asking questions and receiving no replies because the people in NN were to engrossed in their own ramblings about each other, about drugs, etc...... so I left again. It's sad because sometimes I'd like to ask a question or just talk to someone and no one's there.................

I really do wish they'd assign a GM team to each novice network to keep them on track. I have nothing against mentors but this and a few other Novice Network issues just make me wish it could be a bit better moderated... Or moderated at all.

If people in NN are ignoring questions to just talk, I'd actually consider filing a report on them. The reason to be in NN as a mentor is to answer questions and is the only requirement listed by SE via the game. If they're ignoring their only obligation, well, that and inviting new/returning players, they don't deserve to be there. Failing to fulfill their obligation runs the risk of being stripped of mentor status, as is outlined in the game whenever you rejoin NN as a mentor.

I unfortunately have had the same issue, both when i was mentor and then again as a returning player. It's just a gian meme/drama center and really the poor new guys get outright ignored.
I saw to many people with mentor jsut for the crown/NN to bs around. So i took my leave, since my reason for joining it was to genuinely help new/returning players.
I really wish it. Was moderated more, but even though i don't have mentor status anymore I'll still help people figure out content and where to go if they ask me. -

I can't even get in most days for Famfrits NovNet... I want to help people with Crafting/Gathering and only get to help those that join in my Linkshell for it because of how bloated the numbers of mentors that exist now...
In my opinion, as far as combat reqs... if like to see them get increased:
Level 80 DPS/HLR/TNK
2000 duties
1500 coms
DoH/DoL should get a boost to reqs too. There's too many people that used some kind of level boost to get a shiny icon that do nothing for the sprouts and that makes me sad :( -

I've been in NN several times on a lot of servers (all aether data center if that matters) and I've always gotten an answer. I've also never seen any "toxicity" in the NN. People not answering questions, talking about drugs, or even getting into arguments isn't toxic. I wish I could find the toxic community here that people talk about as I'm tired of the 100% positive virtue signaling bs that's rampant.
Is NN helpful? Probably not extremely helpful. Does that make it toxic? No. -

I've had some of my questions answered in NN and at other times it's ignored. Well, I don't think it's ignored on purpose, it's just at the time that I've asked questions that tend to get ignored, there's a lot of chat going on, maybe mentor helping another new player or they're just generally chatting about something. I don't take this to heart, I'll just let them talk and when the NN is quiet again, and if I remember to, I'll ask the question again and it'll usually get answered.
Though saying that, I have had a bad experience with NN on the same server but on a different character, which was quite a long time ago. Since then the people that I had issue with have actually stopped playing the game or have left the NN chat. I must admit it did put me off using the NN but after taking a long break from the game and returning I haven't found NN bad at all. In fact the only things I have seen is the mentors kicking people for being disruptive. -

There are some very helpful people in this program, I'm sure, but there is also those that seep in that fail miserably at public relations. Is the program broken? Not entirely, but it needs to have stricter guidelines put in place to filter out those that are not in there for the reasons it was intended. People need a global chat channel to talk in. The easiest solution to this problem is for Square-Enix to just make a global chat channel like Novice Network, but for general chatter. And then everyone would chill in there over Novice Network.
It really doesn't help that there are toxic people on both sides and that makes it worse. If it was just the general chatter people being toxic--then the "NN is for newbies only!" people would have a leg to stand on, but they're guilty too. I can't tell you how many times I've had legitimately good conversations in Novice Network. There will be no one asking questions with a fun, creative atmosphere and some douchebag chirps in "hey NN is just for helping people!" Like no @@@@ Sherlock, but no one is asking questions. How dare you come in here and start making a scene and derailing from the pleasant conversation going. So if we get a global chat channel then all the prudes can stay in Novice, and the cool kids can hang out in global.
Again, I can't state again how good it would be to get an official global chat channel. And to anyone who says "oh just form a linkshell."--bugger off. That's a bad suggestion and you don't understand how global chat works. The same for 'Join a FC" or "use shout chat."
The bottom line is. Novice Network can and WILL be the global chat channel until Square-Enix gives one. I think that's a valid cause everyone can get behind. Maybe y'all should petition for one or something. However that works. -

NN, on most worlds if not all, is just a clique of Mentors with a gaggle of sycophants. If you want help, don't turn to the NN. Ask in /shout. You're more likely to get help that way.
I'm on Siren and I've rarely seen Siren's NN be anything more than a clique of Mentors who think they get to decide what the conversation is. First day I got my crown and hopped into it as a Mentor, I watched a drama llama parade ensue between the Mentors, kicking each other repeatedly and rejoining. This childish behavior happens every time I peek in to Siren's NN. I never talk there because no one is asking questions, just a bunch Mentors and their respective sycophants behaving like children fighting over a dirty lollipop.Quote:

This is tricky to discuss since every NN is going to have similarities and differences. As for my personal experience on Excalibur's NN there's a mixed bag of Novices getting questions answered, Novices not getting answers, drama between mentors, off topic conversations, ect.
The biggest issues of these usually is the mentor drama, you have all these people with a role akin to a chat mod who can ban each other and it leads to some messy situations where the NN is flooded by pointless drama.
As it is right now it's just a default LS new players auto join with the topic being advice and help. This of course means all the problems that come with a large group of strangers talking in one place. (Heyo sounds familiar!) The biggest thing that would help is like mentioned before, some kind of moderation that has a final say, versus the wild west public policing itself. But even then I couldn't begin to tell you how that would work or what a better system would be.
TL;DR Group chats be like that tho. -

The Novice Network on our server isn't toxic at all, but actually a nice little community. It just sucks that at some point you drop out of it - I feel like the Novice Network is proof that we NEED a general chat with a profanity filter and restrictions for new chars (You need to have finished the ARR Story to participate - Until then, you can use the Novice Chat) so that gilsellers can't spam it. -
