Glamour desperately needs a touch-up

Dear Square-Enix, please fix glamour.

Remember FFXIV 1.0? Remember how you saved this game through your willingness to learn from other games, to take the good parts of games like World of Warcraft and implement it into your own game? Your humility in realizing that the unique and proprietary ways of doing things in FFXIV 1.0 were actually not very good, and that your competitors did things in better ways, that's what ultimately allowed you to make ARR and make one of the most unprecedented comebacks in the history of the game industry.

I'm writing this post because I hope that this humility is still in there somewhere. The Glamour Dresser was a great change when it arrived, but it's beginning to show its limitations. In fact, the problem is that there are limitations at all. If you look to World of Warcraft, their transmogrification system is virtually unlimited. They do away with the need for keeping physical items around and stored, they just unlock an items appearance as soon as you own it, and then that appearance is unlocked for you forever regardless of what you do with the item. And you can collect every single appearance in the entire game. Then you can use them to make as many outfits as you want.

Compared to this the 400 item limit, and the 15 outfit limit is just plain bad. I'm glad you increased it from 200 and 10, but increasing the limits is not the right answer here. They shouldn't exist at all. I can live with the part where you have to store the actual item away in order to use it for glamours, but please, just remove these limits.

I love leveling. I level many jobs, and all the disciplines of the hand/land, and there's 29 of those in total. If I want all of my disciplines of the hand/land to have a unique outfit, for example the level 50 1-star gear, I only have 4 plates left, because there's only about half as many plates as there are jobs/classes. It's just silly. You give your players the option to level every single job and class on one character, but you severely restrict how many outfits a player can make. It's like two entirely different design philosophies are at play here.

So again, please Square-Enix, learn from World of Warcraft again. The way you're doing glamour is horrendously limited, please find a different way.

I don't think FFXIV needs to take EVERYTHING from WoW or Every other MMORPG out there.
Plus did you consider that there could be a reason to the limit? Thats alot of Data Being stored if everyone took advantage of an unlimited system and didn't clean it up every so often. FFXIV probably doesn't have the Mega Server size to take in that amount of Data across 9 Data Centers like WoW can

I also want an improvement on the current system, but I'm so tired of WoW this, WoW that... instead of mentioning other games' systems, come up with something more creative.

This is not what saved FFXIV.

They borrowed little to nothing from other games, in fact they removed many things that other games had that people hated. Most of FFXIV 1.0's issues had to do with the absolute disaster of a mess of code and crisscrossing separately developed systems it was made of. The FFXIV team took the game from absolute dumpster fire to refined story driven experience.

Also the current system is limited BECAUSE of where the games roots are. The old horrible systems are still there, just well written over by genius software solutions. This is why item space is limited, this is why we can't just have a database of thousands of gear images. What you are asking for would require a rework of foundational systems in the game and that isn't likely to happen.

But WoW has a good system for it. We don't need the wheel reinvented if the wheel does exactly what we're after, and quite frankly it feels like some of the features we get are prototypes that we're told are going to get fleshed out and then all they do is give duct tape solutions to them (ie: instead of improving the system, just tack on more slots). Personally I want a better system. WoW's is convenient, easy to use, account wide and provides another collectable that gives even more reason to do old content. In addition Yoshi's a fan of Blizzard's work, so referencing a game he's likely familiar with isn't hurting the situation. We're not trying to make this WoW, but there are features it has that would benefit this game.

You have to remember that when 2.0 released, it was done in under 2 years of dev time, on top of code that was a mess, with the need to keep legacy character still compatible. Glamour wasn't even I troduced until 2.1 or 2.2 months later.

I do t think wow even had the wardrobe or w/e it's called until 2015? 2 years later I think. The devs didn't even have it on their radar until recently.

I mean.... if it were that easy to do, they would have done it already. Other things will have priority, which is fine IMO as the glamour system is adequate as it is.

You do realize that they have this game rebuilt on top of spaghetti code, right? They're trying to replace bits and pieces of 1.0's infrastructure but there's no way they'll likely ever replace it all. This causes limitations in things like glamour, housing item limitations, and so on. To just outright demand this in such a dramatic fashion is laughable. The glamour system isn't half bad as it is right now, so don't understand the "woe is me, this isn't like WoW." cries. Does the glamour system need improvements? Sure, but it's really not as bad as you're making it out to be
Like it's some cataclysmic thing preventing enjoyment of the game. I'm sure they have plans to further expand it, you just need to give it time.

It's good, maybe even great compared to most MMOs (certainly compared to this one), but not perfect.

Personally, I still favor to-slot glamours over to-gear glamour, so that I needn't replace it every time I get an upgrade. It'd just be bound to, say, Warrior-Chest_slot instead of, say, Voeburtite Jacket of Fending.

FFXIV has more active players than WoW lol.

This is why we're stuck with these limitations and convoluted systems for things like inventory management and glamour. They've had to do it this way to prevent too much strain on the game literally built upon the bones of its predecessor.
