Naming conventions of the first (research/speculations)

I love the new expansion, I love the MSQ, I love the new jobs, but you know what I love even more ? Naming Conventions. And on the first, we have eight nice races with completely mysterious naming conventions. Did I say that I love finding patterns and staring too long at words too ? So I stopped questing and started lists of every named npc on the first, in order to try to understand how their names work. And I'm finding some interesting pieces of information, so I'm sharing it here if someone is interested (or has speculations/bits of information to share too).


Some notes:
- I didn't get very far in the MSQ for now (just started Il Mheg), so I don't have access to every settlement. However, the first few areas have many npc (thanks to the 2 cities), so I have decent lists of names. But any information about the lore you gain later, I don't have yet. I'll try to update this with anything I find later (it would be better to finish MSQ first, but staring at names is fun !)
- Because my main source of informations is npc names, I have no information about potential surnames since they aren't displayed on npc.
- No spoilers here, the sections are hidden only for clarity, because they are quite long


I've started with Mystels/Miqo'tes, and Drahns/Au Ras+Galdjent/Roegadyn. I don't have much information about other races for now.


Humes (Hyurs)

No information yet, but I think it's mostly slighty modified Hyur names.


Elves (Elezens)

No information yet !


Dwarves (Lalafells)

Mystels (Miqo'tes)

They are very interesting. I have found how the names themselves work (I need to thank the Chais for giving the first key I needed very early in the MSQ), but I still need information about their social structures to expand this information.

But before talking about names, we need to know what letters exist in their names :
Vowels: a-e-i-o-u (y doesn't seem to exist). You can't double a vowel, except the 'e' (and it has a strange comportement and generates exceptions)
Consonants: There are no 'g', 'p', 'v', and 'x' (for now anyway). 'c' only exist before a 'h' ('ch') and count as 1 letter. 's' can exist alone or before an 'h'. 'sh' is most of the time 1 letter, but has a strange comportement and generates exceptions.


Composition of the names:

Names are made of two words with a dash separating them. For example, we have Chai-Nuzz and Dulia-Chai. What's interesting is that we know they are a married couple, and are called "the Chais". So it's not too far-fetched to imagine that the first word for the men, and the second word for the women, is the surname. I listed every Mystel npc I could find, and here is what I found.

The 2 parts are indeed interverted for male and female. Let's call them part A and part B. Feminine name are in the form A-B, and masculine names in the form B-A.

Some examples (all from ingame npcs):
Masculine names: Fae-Hann (part A=Hann, part B=Fae), Sai-Qesh (part A=Qesh, part B=Sai)
Feminine names: Hanji-Fae(part A=Hanji, part B=Fae), Qeshi-Sai (part A=Qeshi, part B=Sai)


Part B:

Part B is always 3 letters ("but Chai is 4 letters..." don't forget that 'ch' and 'sh' count as 1 letter).

These 3 letters are always 1 consonnant and 2 vowels. Except for 'Kee', it's always 2 different letters.
Examples (all from ingame npcs) : Tao, Chai, Sue, Rua, Fae, Lee.

I didn't find any confirmed family (or tribe) relationship other than the Chais, so they are the only argument for the surname speculation. I need more information to know if their common name is merely a coincidence or not.


Part A:

Part A is 4 or 5 letters . The first 2 letters are a consonant then a vowel. The 3rd letter is, in all names but one ('Reeq'), a consonnant.

The last 1 or 2 letters depend of gender :
- for women, the name always finishes with a vowel. So it's either 1 vowel (Chora), a consonant and a vowel (Bosta), or 2 vowels (Dulia)
- for men, the name always finishes with a consonant. Most of the time -but not all the time-, it's the 3rd letter doubled (Satt, Zumm, Hann, Ladd), or, if the 3rd letter is a 's', a double t (Tistt, Bostt).

Most of the part A names have a feminine and a masculine version : Hann/Hannji, Bostt/Bosta (the F version of 'tt' is always 'ta'), Chorr/Chora, Lewq/Lewto, Zumm/Zumie.

Part A is most likely the first name.

Notes:

- Syntax is actually far less important than I make it sound like. The important part is how the names are pronounced, because they are almost certainly a phonetic transcription of Mystel language -which certainly has another alphabet, or no alphabet at all. I even think that "s","sh" et "ch" are actually the same sound differently transcribed, and Shai, Sai and Chai are one unique name (same for Shue/Sue/Chue). And the 'strange' letters that don't seem to follow the same rules are actually letters that can't be directly transcribed from one alphabet to the other. That's why I put Reeq with Riki, Nuzz with Nunsi and Satt with Sasha.

- I've found both (masculine and feminine) versions of the exact same full name too often to think it is merely a coincidence. Out of 21 npc who share the part B of their name with at least one other npc, 10 have their exact counterpart somewhere. So the two parts may be more linked than I thought previously, or there may be some naming conventions causing an higher probability of this (it is the case for the Keeper : since the sons take their mother name, there is an higher probability to have 2 miqo'tes with the same surname and almost the same first name)

-There is no difference between Seekers and Keepers.


Information needed:

- Lore about the Mystels. Miqo'tes names are heavily connected to their culture, and you can't understand their naming conventions without understanding how the tribes work. It could be the same for the Mystels

- Named Mystel families and children. If I can have the names of another married couple, or a parent and their child, or siblings, I can see if their names are linked or not, and make or refute hypotesis based on that.

- More examples of names, of course.

Galdjents (Roegadyns) and Drahns (Au Ra)

- I have now a long enough list of names to be almost 100% sure that all the stems are independant of race and gender.

- However, I'm sure the suffixes are gender dependants and shared between the 2 races, since there are only 8 of them and I have a long list of npc who all follow the same pattern (the only suffix I didn't find on both races is -wren, and it's only because I could find only 4 FemGaldjents in total).

- I have now many Xaela and some Hellguards. Like every other race, there doesn't seem to be any separation of the clans.


Information needed:

If I'm right, there is almost nothing left to discover (except if they have surnames), but more stems to add to list are welcome.

Viis (Vieras)

Viis in the first have a name finishing in "-met", "-na" or "-ille". In Fanow, half of them are -met, while the other half has about the same number of -ille and -na. I don't have a complete enough list of Viis outside Fanow to know if they have the same proportion of names, but there could be more "-na" outside.

The suffix could have a signification, but we don't have enough information to be sure.
It could be :
- role in the clan : "-met" would be hunters/guards, "-ille" and "-na" would have other roles. I need to check on Fanow Viis, but I don't have anything contradicting it for now. However, I didn't find strong arguments for it either.
- village of origin : as I said, only half of the Fanow Viis are "-met", so it seems unlikely. However, it's not impossible : there were other villages before the flood, and there are Viis stilll alive today who lived it. So half of the village could be Viis coming from the villages lost in the flood. But I didn't find any strong arguments for this one either.

I found only one exception to the "-na", "-met" or "-ille" : Mjrh.
For those who don't know (very minor spoiler about the lore) :

Mjrh was a Viis who left a long time ago, and a legend says that her tears formed a river.

What's interesting here is that "Mjrh" is very similar to the names of the Source. (spoilers about what are the Source and the First. Normally it's not a spoiler for anyone here since you know this before entering the first, but I'd rather be safe than sorry)

Maybe a long time ago, not too long after the separation, cultures and names were very similar between the Source and the Shards, and they drifted away later.

I assumed with the Chai's that she takes on his first name as her last during marriage as humans would do with last names

It's worth noting there are a couple Rak'Tika Viis who seem to defy the -et endings, some of which reside in Fanow itself. The three involved the ritual for the aether current quest come to mind; I can't remember their names offhand though. Maybe the ending of their names has to do with occupation? Ex: names with -et are hunters and the others are related to rituals? Could just be a tribe ending too though.

There's also a few who seem to have totally different conventions all-together: Carna in Eulmore and Bethana in the Crystarium. Lyna too, of course. The names are greek/latin, which stick out a bit. Though maybe the -a suffix are just Viis who left their tribes.

The one oddity with assuming "Chai" is a family name is that people address Chai-Nuzz as "Master Chai" and that phrasing usually uses the person's given name... but then again we've never dealt with any races that don't put their given name first.

Also I don't think clan separation is considered for the First. There just seems to be one naming pattern per race.

Yeah, I think you're right. There is at least two "-na" Viis in Fannow too, so it's not really a different convention.

That said, there seems to be an usually high number of "-na" Viis outside of Rak'Tika compared to the others. Seems like the "-na" tribe might've left en masse for some reason, with a few electing to stay behind. Could be as simple as a big group of them opting to stick together when they left.

Maybe Lyna can give us more details on that later on. If there's even a major reason for it.

- Viis naming convention added, with Arzalis hypothesis about the signification of the last syllable

What is still needed:

- Anything about Humes and Elves. I've started lists, but they are very short since I started later. I don't think there is any specific gimmick like the Dwarves, Galdjents/Drahns and Mystels, but it's likely possible to find a real life inspiration for the names. I can give the lists when they're a bit longer, but I'm not sure I can find the real life inspiration myself.

- Mystel culture and/or families

- More names for the other races (mostly Dwarves, Ronsos and Viis outside of Fanow). I'm working on it.

That's very interesting.
As you said later, there doesn't seem to be any living Viis with a different convention. And the "-na" and "-ille" aren't as uncommon in Fanow as it seems as first glance (we see about 5 "-met" before seeing the first "-na"/"-ille", but in fact "-met" are only about a half of Fanow, the other half being "-ille" or "-na").
I didn't think it had any meaning before reading your post, but now I think it is a real possibility.
From what I've quickly checked, confirmed guards/hunters are all "-met", and none of the confirmed non-guards/hunters (cook, shamans) are "-met".
The difference between "-na" and "-ille" would be more tricky. Ciuna and Phyna are both shamans, but their mentor (who is certainly a shaman too), is a "-ille". And the cook is a "-ille" too.
The tribe idea seems a bit more unlikely when you know that only a half of Fanow are "-met", but we know :

There where other villages before the Flood, and the surviving Viis from those villages likely came to Fanow. That would mean there was only three tribes though (or maybe the "tribes" are the original units of the Ronka guard their ancestors are from ?)

That's interesting too. We really need a Mystel family or an info-dumping Mystel npc, because we can only speculate for now.

So far the possibilities are :

- Men are Surname-Firstname and women Firstname-Surname. And we need to know if the surname is a family name or a tribe name, and how it works exactly (and, like Iscah said, there may be some discrepancies with how Chai-Nuzz is called by other npcs)

- Everyone has their first name first, and take their opposite gender parent's first name (and their spouse's first name for women) as a surname. It would explain the fact that every 'part A' has a male and a female version.

- The name in its entirety is a first name, and the Chais are merely a coincidence. And it's still very likely the names have some sort of meaning.

I forgot to update the Mystel section with this, I'll do it later.

Almost every Viis we encounter(and all of the ones in Rak'tika as far as I could tell) use Veena customization options, while Lyna, insofar as I could tell, uses Rava options. While that's likely just a coincidence, it could be a clan split. We know that the Emperor split his servants between guardians in the east and the priesthood in the west, and that the priesthood was effectively destroyed during the invasion 3,000 years ago. If the priesthood were the Rava equivalent, it would explain the difference in naming and the near-absence of Viis without nearly invisible eyebrows.

Just expand on your list of names outside of Rak'Tika, these are the ones I've found while wandering around. Most examples always helps!

Crystarium:
Lyna, Bethana (Part of a quest)

I try to list every npc I meet, but I started late depending on the race, and sometimes I'm too occupied with the msq to bother, so I need to go back to some places.

Bethana is a bit strange, because while her name works for a viera, it's also a Galdjent/Drahn name. It's certainly a coincidence, but do you remember in which quest she was involved ? I don't recall the name, so I don't think I've done it.

She's the NPC who gives you the quest for the Twinning.

Also, in response to which models they use, all the -na Viis use Rava models that I've seen so far. All the others use Veena. Not sure if there's any significance there.

Elf Names give me a vague Celtic/Gaelic feel even if right now I don't have any examples for this right now.

I have theory about that. I think Mystel names mirror miqo'te names more than we might think. I think Chai is his first name and Nuzz his last. Similar to Y'shtola and other miqo'tes where they are given their father's first name as a last name. In this case Nuzz was Chai's father. And when females get married they take on their husband's first name as a last name to reference that they are cared for by them now instead of their fathers. I think it's really similar to Seeker names just minus the tribes and breeding male thing(Tia), since males seem more prevalent on the first.

Also it looks like someone suggested this earlier, my page didn't update, grrr.

The problem with your theory Eloah is that "Nuzz" (or any second name of male Mystels) can't be used as the first name for a male Mystel. I have a list of 40 names, and they all have the same pattern, so it can't be a coincidence.
That's why I said that the males taking their mother's first name as a surname (and females their father's) was one of the possibilities, because there is a female first name that is very close to Nuzz (and there is an equivalent like this for every name).

I think I agree about elf names Elecrom. Here is a short list if somone has an opinion on this:
male names: Mynes, Lamlyn, Eismon, Melboth, Lesthil, Taynor, Nyelbert
female names: Ersabel, Katliss, Evelie, Chantilde

Maybe that only means that before the Ronsos used names with a signification in their old tongue, and now they just have names without a real meaning, like the Humes ? So they have similar name conventions, but not with the same names ?

Self-correction here... was rewatching the Crystal Tower cutscenes, and Rammbroes addresses Cid as "Master Garlond".

It may be more about how few characters actually have surnames, or at least commonly stated ones.

I think this is akin to what Roegadyns do between their two clans. The Seawolves use their native language, but the Hellsgaurd use the translated Eorzean equivalent. But one does not have to follow this "rule" as Grynewaht was a Hellsgaurd but had his name in the old language, and was called Green Guard, like most Hellsguards would be.

One thing I noticed while doing the gathering quests, is that Qeshi-Rae calls Mao-Ladd 'Mao' occasionally.

Makes me think that the B parts of the name have more in common with Padjal names than Miqo'te

Male Mystel names might be surname-first after all.

Edit: He's consistently referred to as Reeq by other characters as well, including his father.

From what I've seen so far (and sorry for digging this up but it's relevant to the topic) there certainly is an interesting way in which Mystel are named. Here's a few I've come across where I've paired their names up and assume they are of close family:

Renda-Sue (F) (first-born daughter)
The similar naming thing is a strong indication one is the offspring of the other, if you read further down it's likely Renda is the daughter of Sue

*Mei-Tatch (M) (father)
Tatcha-Roi (F) (mother)
Tatcha-Mei (F) (first-born daughter)
Shee-Tatch (M) (child)
*As above however Mei is of a different clan

*Kee-Satt (M) (father)
Sasha-Kee (F) (mother)

Rae-Qesh (M) (father)
Sasha-Rae (F) (mother)
Qeshi-Rae (F) (first-born daughter)
Sasha is probably the wife of Rae with Qeshi as their daughter

There seems to also be a near-balance of male/female ratio, however there are very few of the darker clan in comparison to the lighter clan at a ratio of 1:10. The different clans share the same naming system and it would also seem the same marital system which may be more closer to Keepers of the Sun than Hyur as I've often come across names split across the continent with very few actually remaining together in the same location like with the Chai couple. It also appears they are not limited to only mating with those of the same clan as with the Tatch and Satt families, this might be down to their dwindling numbers, however it appears that the lighter clan gene is more dominant as none of their children carry the darker clan gene.

From what we know married females have their given name followed by the given name of their partner. This is why I think that Sasha-Rae and Rae-Qesh are most likely husband/wife and Qeshi-Rae is most likely their daughter. From the looks of it the daughter's given name as their father's family name and ending in an A or I and SCH replaced with SH, whilst the sons' family name is the same as their fathers' given name. This indicates that Mei-Tatch is the father of Tatcha-Mei rather than the other way round since Mei is from a different clan, leaving Shee-Tatch as possibly his son and Tatcha-Roi as possibly his wife.

Since we've kinda determined that daughter's given names are similar to their father's names then this would indicate that the Lue couple are a mother/daughter pair and are part of the Chorr family rather than being related to Lue-Reeq (unless he took them both as mates which then puts Tio and Vroi as possibly his sons and either Zoi or Bea could've been a previous partner.)

I did look at other other pairings such as Moshei-Lea maybe being a daughter from the Moa family. If Moshei is from the Moa family then this would indicate the first born daughter is named after the father with their names reversed, so Mosha-Moa would be their first daughter.

Having looked up the characters, the "family groups" you've suggested are rarely from the same town, and some of the characters you're proposing to be parents of adult children don't seem likely at all to me. (eg. Kee-Satt, the Moonkeeper miner from a sidequest chain.)

It's just as possible that there are common recurring name elements, and you can't guess relatives from their names any more than you could assume everyone in the real world with the same common surname is related.

Or the names might just be something other than family names. As covered above, Mao-Ladd is "Mao" and Lue-Reeq is "Reeq", so we can't even be sure if there's a consistent individual-name and family-name element, or which one is which.

I've paired them on the assumption they are related as parent/child, but ofc they could be brothers/sisters/cousins etc. The names however do give indication that they are related in some way.

The names don't indicate they are related though, only that they could be related if naming patterns run as you suggest they do.

We don't know enough to be talking in absolute terms at this point.

I don't think the ending of Viis names relates to occupation. The NPC that leads the FATE chain with her two companions (I think Myalna is her name) doesn't follow this convention and Taina who (from dialogue put together from various stages in the story) is a patrol mainly for the temple grounds. Also Ciulle seems to be a cook or kitchen hand while Korille references her patrols and Lanille is a senior shaman. I think the names have a language significance and the suffixes may actually mean something.

Don't know if anyone else has mentioned it in the thread yet but I was running around in Eulmore and there is a Drahn NPC named "Dawnden" so I assume Dawn is a stem for the Drahn/Galdjent names too.

I know that the person that made the thread is not active anymore, but I found some info on the Mystel names that I don't think got covered in this thread and I thought it might be nice to post in case anyone else ends up looking for the same info later down the line!

Can anyone tell me where this information comes from? I assumed Encyclopedia Eorzea III, I don't have my hands on it yet though so I can't confirm.

Does anyone know if the Elves and Humes got more info in there for the names? From what I gathered, they seem to share name roots, and they seem a mix of English/Germanic/General Fantasy vibes.

I love Norvrandt and every bit of me wants so badly for the devs to tell us more about this world.
