Shadowbringers pre-download

Will we be able to pre-download the game before it launches on Friday?

5.0 patch data will likely go live sometime during the maintenance period on Thursday, not sure exactly when.

Do you know if that was the case for the last two expacs? Im just worried you wont be able to download it until the game actually comes back on for the EA start.

It was the case. Download goes live during maint, it always has, for all maints.

It was the case for Stormblood—I’m sure it was the case for Heavensward as well; I just didn’t start until after it had already launched. Stormblood’s expansion was split into 2 downloads because of its size: one was available in the morning on maintenance day, and the second a few hours later.

You can generally start downloading a little after halfway through maintenance, IIRC. I believe I could start my download around 8-10am JST for the last expansions.

Like other people said you can pre-download most of the archives during maintenance. I remember being able to download Stormblood around 8 to 10 hours earlier than the servers would go live. I also recall most gear being already known to people due to datamining for the same reason.

For those of us on PS4 with automatic downloads checked, it should begin automatically when it is ready since you don't need to log into the FFXIV client anymore to trigger the downloads.

Do we know what the file size will be? Can you check on PS4 before it downloads? It normally tells you on the store for current items, but didn't seem to have it for the preorder when I set it up.

I don't believe we'll have exact numbers until it's available, but assuming somewhere around 6-10GB would probably be a good bet; Stormblood's total patch size was a little over 6GB, and Heavensward was around 8GB.

The size hasn't been announced as of yet as far as I am aware. This goes for all platforms. In regards to downloading it, just place your console in rest mode and it will download the ShB EA update for you.

auto download begins tomorrow (Jun 26) for PS4. doesn't say file size though but when it begins you'll be able to see on the notices/information.

Sony says that the PS4 download will begin @ 0001 on 06/28/19. PC should be around the same time. File size to be 26 Gb.

As far as I’m aware, no. It’s not usually available until much later in the maintenance. Expansions tend to go up earlier than normal patches but I wouldn’t expect it to be available until around midnight EST

I would check the client around midnight, right as we go into the 28th; that would be a safe bet on when the patching server goes live.

That's actually really dumb. Not everyone has lightning speed internet so those of us that live in the country are screwed for getting on right away.

Sure they are still testing and so on so last minute changes to the actual download are probably why it's not released sooner for download.

Let me just call the developers and tell them to stop doing anything and only focus on uploading the new patch and cater to you specifically.

You act like I'm the only one who lives in an area with bad internet. And really, with less then 17 hours until the game comes out... if the patch isn't ready yet then big yikes.

My job involves things similar to what SE is doing right now with SHB, believe me when I say it's incredibly difficult to get something like this right without breaking anything in the process.

It's not as simple as pressing an Upload button and calling it a day.

I’m hoping to have it downloaded and ready to go before I have to go to bed. Since this isn’t a regular patch I would think it would go live sooner than later.

I don't know for SE, but at work we use a software configuration management tool to deploy new software version on our servers.

Of course it need a minimum testing before going on live servers.

I know jack about coding but I feel if someone wanted to make BUKU bucks in real life, they would build a contracting service that handles these updates so it's as simple as hitting upload. I'm talking BzuzkIzkzuzkzizku amounts of money people would pay for that service.

In my minds eye, I just imagined they have a play-test server with the new patch and patch-fixes and then they would just upload that version onto live servers one by one on patch day.

This only works if you have PSPlus, if you don’t you have to have it online

No. You can get Heavensward for Free now, but you need the code to redeem the free copy first.

And if you mean AAR, the base game isn't free either. And you'll have to buy Stormblood to play Shadowbringers.
