Couple housing questions

Returning to the game, but never owned a house in the past, so had a couple quick questions...

1) Can you tell from the Ferry Skipper if a house is in/going to demo? If not, is there a way to tell, or do you just have to stumble across an already demoed lot?

2) what was the approx date when they turned off demo houses due to the natural disaster? (I've read a little bit about this, and am hoping to catch a house once the reset is up).

Once you unlock a residential district, you just need to go to the aetheryte for that area to check all the wards and plots. Nothing tells you when it's going up for sale only that it is for sale. Once it's up for sale though there's a RNG timer applied that will prevent people from buying it until it ticks over. The timer is completely random and can stop at any second.

As for the turning off of demolition, that was back in October of last year. They just turned it on again recently. Within this week will be the first 45 days since reactivation, so some houses should get demolished.

The demolition was paused, not restarted.
So it being 45 days-ish from the restart is not actually all that significant. If someone had 2 days left back when they paused it, they had 2 days left back in October when they started it.

This is true, but it also still gave those people plenty of time to step back into their house which resets the timer, even while it's paused.

Its significant in that anyone who reset their timer during the pause but stopped playing during the roughly 6 months the timer was off will have their house demo in the next few days. Its not as significant as it could be since houses have been going on and off ever since the timer was unpaused.

As others have pointed out, people had around 6 months to step inside their house to reset the timer. 45 days from when the timers were started back up (either after being reset by someone walking into their house or still the same they were when timers were paused) is usually the largest catch of houses becoming available since people will have stopped playing during that time and might not have come back (though plenty of people are coming back to get ready for Shadowbringers, so this might not follow the normal cycle).

As to OP's questions - There is no way to tell what houses are going to be demo'd ahead of them actually being auto-demolished. Some tips that people have learned though are that demos happen on the hour, so it's always good to check the aetherytes on the hour if you're house hunting. (You still have to deal with the random timer before you can purchase a house, so good luck!) The approximate date is either June 6th or June 7th, so later this week.

Everything I've been told is that use of the house while the timer is paused does not reset your housing timer.

Well, haven't lost a house yet, all is well.

This might be the most un-fun thing I have done in game. Just straight camping a single spot, so far, 5 hrs, just devalued only 32k gil (wtf lol). starting on the next 6 hours. Ugh

I really wish house plot was an instance like...no limits for terrain, plot or oportunity to all have one. many players could see free plot in same spot one already have a house.

Worst system ever. 7 hours i spent camping a spot and someone just waltzes in and drops their house.

Such an amazingly bad system.

It is definitely a horrible system. A lot of plots opened up today though so you do have a lot to choose from depending on your server. I'm on Midgardsormr and so many spots opened that they just keep going down in price now. Though I'm still waiting for the random timer to tick over on this plot been here for 5 hours now. Hasn't been any competition though for the spot at least. It's incredibly stupid though that someone could just relocate to here suddenly just because they feel like it. I don't get why relocation gets to bypass the random timer that nobody else can bypass. It's a system completely designed to be against new buyers. Anyone with a house already doesn't care whatsoever.

I don't think i have ever been so mad at a game before lol.

They should swap to a lottery system where you deposit the gil for the house and it gets returned if you don't win the house or implement instanced housing.

If you're playing this game with the expectation that you'll actually be able to get a house without being one of those bots who cheats the system or having done so BEFORE this timer system came into play....I have some bad news for you: it won't happen. You're better off cancelling your sub and uninstalling until probably 8.0.

I've actually managed to get *two* houses, a FC , and a personal without cheating the system. And have several friends who have too. Though to be fair, I'm taking about between Hyperion and Famfrit.

This is the other issue people keep having... They play on less populated servers then brag about being able to get a house and it's not so hard. Meanwhile the more populated servers have tons of issues going on. No matter what though the issues exist and need to be fixed... they took one problem (monopolization), fixed it (limited housing to 1 per account), but then made it infinitely worse (random timer)... I don't know what the thought process was there.

While Hyperion is a preferred world, it's not really a "less populated server". It's about middle of the pack. We actually have more active characters than Midgardsormr according to the latest census. I agree Famfrit is a lower populated server, but that doesn't mean that housing isn't important there (some of our best designers are there). There just aren't enough houses to go around for the huge number of people who play on the NA servers. (Point of reference, the newest census shows JP having around 17k less active players than NA, but JP has 8 more servers than NA, aka JP has 34,560 more houses for their 17k less people. I'm sure it's not a popular opinion, but I've said it before and I'll say it again, what we need is more NA servers. Though it probably won't happen with how hard it's been to get people to balance population on the NA side, but maybe world visit will help with that.)

The census is a guessing game pointed towards those doing end game content. It only counts players that have reached certain milestones in the MSQ while ignoring players that aren't so progressed. SE has far more accurate information about the population on each realm than the census will ever reflect.

Chances are you don't have more active characters than non-preferred worlds do.

Hyperion is actually fairly populated. Its a legacy server with lots of active players. Its not high-pop, but it certainly isn't low.
