Aside from ShB and the jobs changes controversies overall, I wanted to point out that it's going to be 5.0 and we still have to restart the game after plugging headphones. It would be nice to fix this issue someday...:(

That would be nice :).
Depending on your setup (this may not be helpful at all lol), you could buy a male to female cord (those 3.5mm things).. Then when you want to change from speakers to headphones plug and unplug from this extended cord (computer -> extended male to female cord -> your speakers/headphone goes here, just plug/unplug as needed).
In the computer's eyes you never change cords :3. So I can for example change FFXIV from speakers to headphones, and of course other picky applications.
Not that the above should be the "solution" people go looking to for this issue lol. It'd be preferable this wasn't a problem of course. I have the cord setup for other reasons and just happened to notice it was helpful for applications that got picky lol (but depending on how you have things set up it may not be optimal/possible).
Oh, that's some interesting solutions to try thanks! But yeah, the developers team should really still give some thought about it. That being said, I just recalled how the live letter was a mess because of sounds issues and it's not too encouraging.
This was reported so often in so many ways. There was even some official response one time I think," coding might be too difficult "then some guy posted how to do it (as dev) lol... My solution atm is to have multiple outputs plugged in when I start the game. Basically back of Mainboard for speakers and front for earphone let's you change(plugging in and out earphones) while playing the game between those two. Not really ideal... Games in the 90s could change audio sources while ingame already man, it's ancient
Ooooh so this isn't just a me issue. Good to know that I actually can't fix it! Boy, did I try XD
This has been fixed for the Benchmark, which is really just a stripped down client. It came with a SoundCoreBridge.dll, that seems to be handling this. No reason to fix it just for the benchmark.
Oh my! That'd be splendid!
When doing boring tasks ingame (Hello Castrum roulette!) I usually set it from my soundcard to my HDMI device in the Windows control panel.
This way I can hear the gamesound a bit while watching TV. But as soon as I set from "SoundBlasterZ" to "HDMI", it goes silent. Plugging in and out - silence. When I am not keen on restarting (e.g. Duty Finder) I usually pumped up my headset's sound and put them on my desk.
I hope they really get it right. That is just as annoying as games like Dishonored 2 do not rea-tlime realize when you switch from controller to keyboard and mouse - something almost all games do.
I've never had an issue unplugging and plugging headphones while the game is running, but I've been plugging directly into the speaker socket of the computer or laptop, rather than indirectly into a speaker.
Changing default output audio device, right now is a guaranteed client crash. Great thing to hear the benchmark is not affected, and it makes up for hopes about the expansion's upcoming client.
I have given it up to wait for a solution of this.
My workaround is the "Elgato Sound Capture" software, which is part of the Elgato Game Capture Software. With this you can send the sound to as many audio devices as you want at the same time.
Before this got released I've used another software solution (forgot the name). But this one had a huge latency.
I have an issue with my Bluetooth headset. The game doesn't crash, just the sound won't transfer to the headset if the game is already running before the headset is turned on/connected and so the game has to be restarted. I hope it's the same issue with the USB type issue and hopefully it's been fixed by 5.0.
I think that's what OP was talking about too since they said you have to restart to change audio (quite different than being crashed lol). This issue is also with 3.5mm cords depending on how things are set up. I don't crash when I switch either but I don't use USB but I used to have to restart the game to change from my headphones (3.5mm) to my speakers (hooked up via 3.5mm). I can now though switch audio between speakers and headphones since I've incorporated an extended male to female cord that is always plugged in.
Just wanted to add that since I didn't realize USB had a problem either (crash to desktop sounds fabulous..... lol hope that's fixed for sure!), but I saw some USB people here talking about how 3.5/other didn't have an issue per say (which imo having to restart is an issue, or at least annoyance).
Aw, well that just diminishes my hope, lol. (Speaking of USB problem, I do have a problem with using gamepad on PC that sometimes temporarily disconnects the gamepad while playing FFXIV. One good thing about using Steam is that it automatically reconnects the gamepad, but it's still an ongoing issue.)
I imagine if it is fixed for USB (allowing the PC to switch devices) then it'll be switched for us too :) (someone suggested it's good to go in the benchmark). Just seems like USB explodes while some of us non-USB don't lol, I've never crashed but I've had the game refuse to recognize I don't want to use speakers anymore and to switch to headphones (until I restarted, or until I switched to having them share the same line so the game/computer don't know or care that they could change).
Is the gamepad disconnecting just for FFXIV? I almost feel like that'd be another issue, because if people's gamepads (in general) were disconnecting I think there would be a riot on the forums on how it killed them during raid or something lol. May be able to trouble shoot that and fix it~! (That'd drive me mad, reminds me of when wireless mouses or keyboards didn't last for years or had super spotty connections lol).
I think same problem as in this thread, except I use 360 controller: http://forum.square-enix.com/ffxiv/t...-disconnecting
There were other threads as well with disconnect issue that I found in the past, but that thread might be the latest one.
I do really think I've had both cases. The sound not transferring one for sure and yeah it's mainly the issue I was talking about. But at some point the game crashed too. Wasn't sure at that time that plugging something really was the cause since I was undergoing other strange issues with the game (can't remember what they were).
Issue fixed confirmed here. I can now switch audio output without any issue!
Interestingly enough, ShB fixed my own headphone issues. I used to have to restart the game anytime I wanted to switch to my wireless headphones or two my computer sound system. I don't have to do that anymore since ShB dropped...
I can confirm that it's a great way to use a M to F extension cord.
This way I can swap my external speakeres & headset who both use the green 3.5mm audio jack.
Sadly no still way to change to my USB headset though.
There's older INDIE games who actually have proper audio support :/
Ok so i dont know if anyone posted this but in case nobody has;
What i do is i have a monitor with a speaker out port, i plug in my speakers there
For my headset, i plug directly into the PC MB, or in my case, the wireless USB stick.
When i want to switch from speakers to my wireless headphones, i go into the volume and speaker settings and switch there. Have not had to restart once
This also works if you have your speakers plugged into your PC and have a wireless headset plugged in via USB
I'm glad I wasn't the only one that noticed that SE secretly fixed this!
Yeah, they fixed it :D awesome. So many people in my fc were overjoyed from it!
