Torrent it, always works for me. Run the patcher once so it starts downloading then cancel. The torrent file is in \Documents\My Games\FINAL FANTASY XIV\downloads\ffxiv\48eca647\metainfo

The updater is still pretty bad. You can't limit the up- or download and so it can happen that the massive upload rate kills the download rate.
