Thoughts on what this "secret project" that Yoshi P is working on can be? New MMO?

Recently, Yoshi P has stated that he is working on a secret project, what this project is, nobody outside SE really knows? But when we look at the grand scheme of things, it could just very well be that he's working on a single player RPG like FF7:R.

BUT, that's too boring of a conversation. I think we're bored to death with the eventual(?) release of said game.

FF11 is edging towards its end of life. I was surprised to hear last year that new content would be made but I think this is the last batch of updates before they stop adding new content. I don't know enough about FF11 since I have never played it but who knows what they will do? Is it similar enough for it to be bridged with 14?

Then there is also FF14 6.0 and beyond. Where does that lead? In a more recent interview, while I don't have it on hand, Yoshi was saying that they are thinking about what happens for 6.0 and beyond. Do they add a new graphics engine or do they make due with what they have? What about the next FF MMORPG? There is a lot to consider so perhaps this new secret project may in fact be the next FF MMO?

11 is coming to a close sooner than later. 14 is gaining momentum but it is also a dinosaur. People who got far in 11 might not want to switch to 14 without some kind of incentive. Same with those of us playing 14, how do we go from 14 to 16(?).

I don't know what secret project they are working on, and maybe there will be a bridge that crosses over from 11 to 14 to the next mmo if there is one. For all we know, this secret project could just be a FF7:R or another SE game entirely. Whatever it is, I'm sure it's going to be great and "I look forward to it" :)

FFXI Mobile is still in development, surprisingly. That game will probably outlive FFXIV at this point.

FFXI has content planned for the 20th anniversary in a few years. It's not dying because no game can replace the type of gameplay it offers, including this one. I still go back to FFXI every so often to have MMO fun and I don't feel like this one.

I don't think the project is another FF MMO. They have two active ones and I doubt they want three running at the same time.

I would guess it's another IP honestly.

I highly doubt that it's a new MMO. If I were to guess it's another FF title or maybe another title entirely.

It's a new "Core title" according to the announcement, and coincidentally he was talking about what he'd theoretically do if he happened to get the chance to direct XVI as recently as the last few FanFests. Yosuke Saito also said in the recent past that he'd like to be a permanent part of the XIV team and work his way up to producer, and now he's coincidentally a guest creator for the Automata raids.

It's all a complete coincidence I'm sure.

I hope it's a new MMO!...


FFXI will not live forever and by the time the new game was finished it would be time to put it to rest, I think it works great this way and Square Enix will definitely continue to make new games and there's nothing better than a new Final Fantasy Online!...


I like FFXIV but time has left it behind looking really outdated and I want a new adventure to replace it as soon as possible!...

High fantasy Final Fantasy is the only thought I have, given that he said he'd like to make something like that. That's hype, my favorite FF game (there are many I love) is probably FF9.. just came together for me (music, environments, game systems, mini-games).

MMOs take so long to make, and require such a large amount of money, that no companies outside of China and Korea are willing to invest in something with no guaranteed RoI. I'm not even sure if the Chinese/Korean MMO mill still exists outside of mobile.

There's a reason that the most successful MMOs at present are as old as they are. ESO is probably the most recent, and it came out in 2014.

It's not outside the realm of possibility that they're looking towards the wrapping up of the FFXIV storyline over the next 4 years or so. He did mention once that they had plans for 10 years and we're on year 6 already. And while I seriously adore FFXIV quite a bit, and am in no particular rush to replace it, I would not be averse to something new either. Especially something on par with FFXV in terms of graphics. I imagine a new MMO would also allow them the chance to build the code properly from the ground up and fix a lot of the inherent problems we have with the current stuff.

I don't envy Yoshi-P his exhaustion if that's the case though. That poor man looks like he needs a 10 year nap as it is. Either way, we'll find out what insanity he's cooking up next eventually lol!

I don't think XIV is dwindling anywhere near as much as it would need to for them to consider a new MMO, they wouldn't want to cannibalize subscriptions like that quite yet.

Considering it takes roughly 6 years to make a new MMO. I would just hope they were able to do a big graphical update with ffxiv.

But honestly I hope its ffxvi because yoshi did state that he wanted to do a high fantasy stand alone title. And ffxv did have multiplayer in it.

They may not be physically capable of doing a graphical update to FFXIV. We've heard for years about the godawful spaghetti code they had to build RR on from 1.0. At this point it may actually be easier and cheaper to start building out new code than attempt to tweak the current stuff beyond a certain point.

Mind, I'm not saying they're definitely doing this, or that it would be even soon, but we're clearly starting to reach the beginning of the climax of the overarching story, so looking ahead 4 or 6 years isn't implausible.

In fact Black Desert is december 2014 and TESO april 2014.

That said back to the topic.

I highly doubt any "big" MMO to be released before 2021. Many MMO have been released or updated between 2012 and 2016 and they are planned to last around ten years. Technically, we can expect new blue chip generation to be released around 2021 and with the Playstation 5 expected for 2020/2021, it doesn't sound unreasonable to think they will wait 2022/2023. All little announced MMO look awfully already old-fashioned (physics, graphics, animation Aion like, ArcheAge like).


And... considering the chinese market (there are few chineses MMO Neverwinter like) they probably want to know how this market evolve. Will mobile devour everything or will PC and game console last? One need to take the big risk, who will take the risk to get the answer? Tencent looks to me the best placed. Other question : what about the IA, there are still remaining question about who and when the first "IA chips" will appear one the market.

For me, since about two years I think about it, the best convergence year seems to be 2023.

I doubt it is another MMO, although I would love an MMO set in the Chrono Trigger/Cross universe where you could hope through time and stuff. I am pretty sure the main story arc for FFXIV will wrap up in 6.0 and then beyond that who knows? I wouldn't be surprised if they had a plan for a new threat in 7.0 and beyond.

If it is a new MMO, I kind of doubt it'd be something that would compete with FF XI or XIV.


And just because it's Square-Enix, doesn't mean it has to be a Final Fantasy...

Dragon Quest recently got a new game, so it's likely out, but there's other fantasy series they have... Heck, The Last Remnant was a good game and I wouldn't mind a sequel...

I am and proud of it :D Seriously it's said about every mmo: "the original game is so poorly designed, there are just way too many limitations, blah blah" yet somehow they muddle through and last for 10 or 20 years. What are we visiting the 2nd of 14 shards? Have we even seen the entirety of the world? This game can last 30 years if they want it to.

My guess is a new online Final Fantasy game that has clothing, weapons and environments that look more like the world of Final Fantasy Tactics. Or at least that's what I hope. :)

SE definitely needs a new game built for the next gen consoles and PCs. FFXIV was designed for the PS3 and it's going to look even more dated when the PS5 comes out.

Ah yes FFXI. I too have had my share of deleveling back in the day. It still got a pretty active playerbase and I revisit it from time to time to have fun.

Black Desert Online is a Korean MMO that took 1mil dollars to create and already made 1 bil in returns. Released in NA on 2016 lol.

Is that the PC version exclusively, or including the mobile version, which has a much larger population? Also, while I haven't touched BDO since it got localized, I've heard that it's gotten much heavier on the pay-to-win MTX.

I'm honestly just hoping that it's FFXVI. I've always said that FFXIV was the last FF game that actually feels like an FF game even being an MMO. It would be nice to see this franchise go back to it's roots after XIII and XV took such a drastic change aesthetic and gameplay-wise.

I know there are newcomers to the series that only began playing when the game began going the action-RPG route and loath turn based combat but I'd really like to see an updated version of it. Something similar to FFX-2 or a more fleshed out version of XIII's that actually lets you play the game and make your own decisions in combat.

I've been saying Yoshi needs a break from FFXIV though, that's for sure.

I think Yoshi-P straight up said it wasn't going to be a MMO at the Paris fanfest. SE would be dumb to make one when XIV is still so profitable and probably has at least another 4-6 years left in its lifespan.

My money is either on XVI or a high budget spinoff (probably Tactics-style). A lot of people don't know that Yoshi-P's division has experience working on well-received odd projects like Dragon Quest Builders. The sooner it's announced, the higher probability that it's a spinoff/new IP. The longer we go without an announcement, the higher probability that it's XVI because there's no way in hell SE execs would ever let XVI release or even be announced before FF7R at this point. (On the bright side, if it is actually XVI, it should be super polished by the time it's released.)

XIII and XV killed the singleplayer series completely for me, so if it's not an mmo or an upgrade for FFXIV ( like DX12 and better textures, lighting, etc. ), I wish Yoshi well but don't care.
