Attributes for GLD

Hello there, guys. I was playing as MRD, and I would simply dump all attribute points in Str and Vit, since both increase damage and Vit increases health. GLD, though doesn't seem to be that easy to manage. I could gather that:

Str increases damage
Dex increases accuracy
Vit increases HP
Mnd increases damage a little

Would a sound distribution be Str 23, Dex 15, Mnd 7? I really don't know if I should put anything in Vit, or if I should just dump those 7 points in Dex. Any help would be appreciated!

Vit and Mnd. Gld isn't a DD, and once Pld comes there will be little reason to use Gld. You want Mnd for self cures.

Alright! You do have a point there, Silver, thanks a lot for the help :) Just in case, though, should I put anything in Dex at all, to increase Accuracy? Don't know if that's an issue for GLD.

Dex is also good for Block Rate + right? Or block with shield not so important as I'm thinking for GLA? Was gonna go VIT/MND/DEX personally

Dex does affect block rate, but you're better off just using materia to fill that up. The only relative stats Gld can put in hands, are Dex, HP, and Parry+. Of these I'd use Dex, and with a couple tries you can get a Dex+30 or more gloves pretty easy. You can then put Vit(or Def) on the Body and Mnd on the head.

VIT/STR is what I go for. Sure a Gld isn't a DPS but the more damage you put out the better hate you hold. Been playing Gld for a long time and DEX doesn't do much for block rates and MND doesn't really help with heals at all. If you want better self cures it's better to go for Healing Magic since it's more potent. Personally I choose MND over healing magic for head slot materia though for the slight increase in DPS so I can hold hate better, not act like a DD. VIT is also much more important for the damage reduction than the tiny HP boost and is a main focus over any other stat for any Gld.

But this is just my personal advice and you should make your Gld fit your own personal taste. My LS knows me very well for being an excellent tank though, so you can trust me that the advice is accurate.

Thank you very much, guys! I guess I wasn't really factoring in what my equipment can do for me, so I'll make my build based on that. I'm thinking of going somewhat the way AmyNeudaiz has, I was just afraid that it wouldn't hold as true for a GLD as it holds for a MRD. After all, Vit DOES increase MRD's weapon damage. But, then again, GLD isn't a a DD, so, even as damage is important for holding hate, it isn't as important as for a MRD, I guess. Vit/Str it is, then, maybe with a little sprinkle of Mnd :)

GLA can't parry (with shield).

STR most important stat, increase AA, WS damage therefor increasing aggro (primary purpose of being tank). The other 22 points are a toss up.

VIT to HP ratio is poor, like 1.4 hp per vit or something I think and sucks for increasing defense and acting as any real kind of mitigation against a hard hitting boss like ifrit.

DEX is the worst stat in the game imo, for every class including archers as it only increases archer AA damage. You are always accuracy capped with the full party buff and if you want to solo just get a mog blade. Adding dex for just the sole purpose of critical hits is a waste of points, it's rng, don't bank on crits for anything. Adding dex for block rate is pointless for gladiator, might be different for PLD but I wouldn't get your hopes up on that.

PIE, you don't need the minor mp boost or 4 enfeeble skill from it.

MND, you get AA only damage increase that probably hard caps around 280 and small self heal increase on cnj cure spell. Might be more useful for PLD healing spell but idk, have to find out tomorrow.

I did 23 STR and 22 VIT thinking the hp increase was going to be higher, tomorrow I will probably restat to 23 STR and probably 22 MND IF there some larger advantage compared to the minor increase from VIT. All assuming PLD AF doesn't set you near probable MND hard cap for AA damage.

I have seen parse results for VIT from BlueGarter and it does give a decent reduction in damage. Look it up yourself if you'd like. (too lazy to link)

No, VIT and DEF does very little against harder hitting and higher level monsters which both current bosses are. Adding 22 VIT isn't going to make any noticeable difference when a single healer can practically out heal any damage done to you. Read the part where he explains how naked ifrit works, should make it even easier to understand.

Okay I'll propose this to you for adding points. Don't. Not yet. Any points you put into Gld will be carried over to Pld. There is a very real chance that stats may work slightly different for jobs, or have a greater effect. Wait for a bit, maybe a week, see how stats fair after tomorrow for Pld. For now use materia and gear.

I think they said you can redo stats as you please with this patch so it's not permanent, not 100% certain though. Also you are pretty much stuck doing one of two things, STR VIT or STR MND both provide minor boosts that are not game breaking or really worth arguing over which is superior. Only thing that really matters to help decide what to do is to see how much, if any, MND you get from PLD AF. Fairly certain all secondary AA stat boosts have a hard cap similar to DEX for archer so after awhile going past that is only giving minor healing increases.

Really hoping PLD has some percentage based damage reduction traits that help reduce damage, going to be really sad if they just throw on some extra 50 defense or something :(

22 VIT may not help -that- much but when you add it on top of a double meld VIT Cuirass and a double VIT meld Winglet, yes it does make a noticeable difference.
