Storage: The Unending War (Or why I don't care about any of that other stuff.)

I spend at least half an hour every day fighting a futile battle against the lack of storage in this game. Do I need this? Can I trash that? Should I sell this? It's a struggle to keep my head above water. I can't go do fun things because I have no room for the rewards. Square Enix continues to exacerbate the problem by adding new items on an almost weekly basis.

Hatching Tide is here today. New cosmetics and items that I literally have no room for. The only new storage option added recently is the glamour chest and it's nearing capacity.

Why should I care about new classes or races if I can't store items related to the ones I have now? I honestly would trade in the new races and classes for 100 storage slots.

I'm sure they'll come up with another way to pay for yet another retainer.

We should be getting new storage for 5.0. Will be interesting to see how they handle it but they did increase armory and inventory space last xpac and gave us a saddlebag. One can hope we'll get another free retainer for Shadowbringers.

yeah, this post has reminded me I need to just completely clear out one of my retainers. Honestly haven't pulled anything out in the past expansion so its clearly not important. I absolutely hate the inventory management in this game. I would've sold nearly all of my old glams for seals if I didn't have to run back the GC from the summoning bell... and even when i did put in the effort, I had way too many seals and nothing worthy of buying...I'm just gonna trash it all.

I just wish we could actually get a new retainer at least every new expansion. Sigh, wish.

All event gear can go in the armoire. Big space saver if you haven't been using it.

I also only recommend only keeping rare crafting materials, as it's easy to gather most of them needed for pretty much anything within a few minutes.

As for glamour, unless you keep 1 of every piece of gear, it's not too bad. Just pick the ones you are most likely to use for glamour, junk the rest.


Hoarding can't be fixed with inventory updates.

People complaining about every little thing they don't have and this poor soul over here fighting the real battle. My heart goes out to you and your struggle.

Obviously to each their own, but what some people would call hoarding, I would consider being efficient. I personally despise having to go farm 4-5 random materials before I can craft something simply because I didn't have space to store the materials I had previously gathered. If I'm on a crafting spree? That may involve many, many items...and I'd much rather have the materials already waiting vs. having to spend a good chunk of time farming before I can get my actual crafting done.

As far as armor collection goes, glamour is huge for a lot of people. There are a lot of very unique pieces scattered about through raids, dungeons, and elsewhere. Outside of storage woes, it makes no sense to drop it only to have to farm it again when you want to use it in a glamour. Depending on what content the gear is actually from, that could be quite the challenge and a waste of time.

It does tend to annoy me a bit when people defend the system by claiming those that have issues with it are just hoarders. That is pushing the blame for a shoddy management system onto the player.

For an example of a game that does it right - GW2 . In that game, all crafting materials fit in their own special material bank. Any armor you find can be saved as a skin and then discarded if you no longer need the actual gear in your inventory.

I plan to clear my retainers of anything from ARR unless I want it for glam. Then I'll clear out anything from HW once I get all of my crafters above 60. I figure once everything I play is at level 70 I can easily go back and gather anything I'll need if I ever need any ARR or HW materials.

I guess I'm just used to games that have limited inventories.

It doesn't bother me that much. Keeps me from holding onto things I'll never use. This thread is actually a good reminder to clean out my crafting mat retainer, it's full of stuff that I never use and haven't used in months or years.

I can't speak for anyone else but I made a bunch of space by just going through my retainer inventories and asking 'am I really ever going to actually use this? And if the answer isn't a hard YES, how easily is it to get it back?' For example I'd held onto a bunch of eveling gear i could either craft or buy off the mb if I ever needed it for some reason. ARR and SB artifact sets i can buy off a vendor. Random materials I just got rid of.

It would be nice to have a material only tab like WoW has for banks
or another retainer...

I would prefer the inventory of the current retainers be increased rather than be given more of them to hire and manage. Granted it still wouldn't be enough for some players, but if personal inventory can be increased then don't see why the retainers' can't be seeing as it's limited to access in certain areas anyway.

This a 1000 times over... it just sucks. I got like 2 retainers for glamour, one for weapons.

But mats... its not hording its called a stock, its called being prepared. If i got free time to build up a stock of mats, mostly NQ anyways to save space.

IMO we should have a place to stock nq mats, ALL mats.


And for glamour, no, i dont wanna run that outdated 24ppl raid 60x to get that one piece i want again >_>

The problem with the Armoire is that it doesn't save those expensive dyes.

Who is hoarding though? I don't have a single piece of gear saved that isn't something I'm keeping for glamour. The storage game is not fun. I can't imagine how people with multiple characters can even function in this game. It's only going to get worse with the glut of new items they will release in the expansion. I can't think of another MMO where players are starved for storage this badly. Well aside from those that sell storage in a cash sh... Oh wait.

Even without hoarding, they give us a lot of stuff to carry. Shafts, springs, pedals, lenses, gears, bolts and the weapon item. Books for savage raids. 3 different coins from 24 man raids. Eureka you got crystals, protean crystals, lockboxes and the paz drop item x4. Different totem item for each primal. If they don't want to give us more space, they need to condense these drop items down.

It'd be nice if they took a page from ffxi and allowed us to store stuff with npc's. In ffxi you npc's that stored crystals, seals, rems tales, alluvion skirmish upgrade items, gear, etc.

i dont think they could design a worse system than the one in 14. just give us wow's transmog system. it's perfect and absolutely flawless

I feel your pain OP. I just ran the EX primal farm for ponies and had to juggle gobbling up primal weapons for glamouring and trying to keep inventory space for when the mounts actually dropped. It was a pretty harrowing experience.

How many of you have said this when you need to craft something? I'm guessing most of you.

The sum of all the items currently in my inventory is easily worth 100 mil, and that's a lowball figure. How much is an individual inventory slot worth when you have an inventory of such size and value? When you look at things from this perspective it isn't so easy to just dump what's in there. Not to mention that time = money as well. When you craft as much as I do, having to spend hours gathering the mats you need seriously cuts into the time you have available to play in a day. It's not like the crafting itself is a short chore either, and I'm a free bird. No kids or spouse to worry about. I could only imagine the limited amount of time for others who do.

I also try to keep my inventory reasonable, and only hold onto mats I use often. If something sits in there unused for a long time, I tend to get rid of it, and time and time again I find myself having to gather it once more. Many of the items in my inventory are mob drops, crafted into various leathers, threads and cloth that are HIGHY used, and you can't just go and gather mob drops without fighting against RNG. Which is a big reason why I've been asking for a damn Beastmaster gathering class to facilitate this process.

Fact of the matter is that inventory limitations seriously sucks in this game. Any hardcore crafter/gatherer will undoubtedly agree, and I haven't even touched on armory and glamour limitations, which is what everyone eventually struggles with. It gets to a point that you pretty much have to level all jobs within a respective role in order to let go of lower level gear so you don't have to hang on to it, or go through the trouble of getting it again.

I've mentioned many times that grand storage chests should be located at inns, houses, apartments, FCs, and the GC barracks for our weapons. That way all players have access to them. One for inventory. One for armory. One for weapons. Our personal inventories and armories would simply be for our immediate needs. They wouldn't need to increase these immediate inventories and armories anymore, and load times would decrease while they would likely increase when going into inns, houses and so forth. But who cares about that?

We deal anyway we can, but as the OP said, it is a constant battle after you've put in a certain amount of playtime into the game.

I'm actually not doing the event for armory space, actually.

Just an fyi, the outfit is already flagged to go in the armoire, so you can stuff it directly in there after acquiring it.

Okay, you caught me, I'm just lazy.

The one true war indeed. I dont even hoard materials! All my retainers are full with glamour gear because my dresser is already full...

Keep in mind the "All-on-One-Character" facet of this game is truly the crux of the issue. By most games' standards we have a TON of inventory space, but unlike the rest of them, we are effectively using that space for about 8-10 characters worth of usable armor, and nearly 30 characters worth of weapons. If you played purely say... Warrior, and never touched anything else, you would nearly without a doubt have A FREAKING TON of empty space without extra retainers. But, once you include all the crafters being on the same character, all the materials end up there as well.

Personally my favorite crafting material inventory system was the Guild Box on EQ2, as long as you craft inside the Guild Hall you would automatically use the mats stored in it (given you had the proper permissions) and it stacked to like 10k or so. Imagine dumping 10k of most crafting materials into a box and simply having to be in the FC Basement to use em... small price to pay for all that inventory space.

Exactly. Right now hunt books are just eating 5 slots in my inventory while I wait patiently to have time to finish collecting them. Even when I manage to clear out 40 - 50 spaces it's just full again within a few hours of normal play. I'm right back to deciding what I need the least. Which usually results in me having to go farm that item again within a week.

You just reminded me that I should actually clear my retainers.
To be fair, our inventory is quite big, but with concept "all jobs on one character" it's not enough. Maybe they will expand inventories in 5.0.

I've played games with a lot more storage. Even WoW has a lot more especially when you consider that they allow 18 characters per server with each having it's own storage.

2 retainers simply isn't enough, especially as a crafter.

I've already converted every material to NQ, got rid of every material that's cheap on the MB, got rid of every material that only has rare uses (regardless of value), don't store glamour, dye or fun items and I'm barely managing with 2 retainers and ShB is coming along with another 100 or so crafting materials. I can't even attempt the "craft 1 of everything" achievement tools because it would take forever with just 25 bag slots.

I don't think it's unreasonable that I like to be able to craft commonly used leveling gear or tools for friends/fc members/personal use on the go without having to buy everything on the mb or gather all the base component materials from scratch.
At this point they might as well just bump the subscription up by 1-2 euro, add 1-2 more retainers and stop pretending.

We need a Marie Kondo NPC that helps you sort that shit out and find what sparks joy.

Sorry but that's an awful idea. Believe or not the large majority of the player base gets by with 2 retainers. You have the option to buy more for really cheap.

honestly i just wish theyd add storage bags ,boxs to the house so we can store mats and stuff instead of inventory hording and another retainer hardly helps a extra retainer helps for a day till their invi is full with useful mats

Yeah to be fair I think that retainers are such a bad system in general, except from the part where they gather stuff for you I really wish we could be less dependent on them. A nice storage at inns/houses would suffice a lot of problems imo. Some sort of bank that has a tab for different types of items.

Yes it's a terrible system and one of the worst parts of the game. I believe the full subscription plus retainers is $25/mo. Yet hardly anyone ever speaks up about it. Even in some of the worst cash shop games unlocking storage is a one time fee not a monthly rental... It's sad to see people more worried about what is essentially fluff when a core part of the game is in such lousy shape.

$14/mo for the 7 additional retainers or $19/mo if you include the companion app, plus whatever you're paying for a subscription fee.
