Summary: offensive spells that are not yet in the game (and which job could get them)

Hey there, not sure if this has been done before but I'd like to have a comprehensive list of available magical (offensive) spells from the FF universe that are not in the game yet. On top of that I'd like to discuss the likeliness of each skill becoming part of FFXIV and which job could get it in the end.

This thread should be some kind of joint effort to create a list (I will frequently edit the first post then).

So, what spells are missing and which job could get them? I'll start and hope you all just continue and go on!

Apocalypse

Description: Apocalypse (アポカリプス, Apokaripusu?) is a recurring ability in the series, oftentimes being used by extremely powerful enemies, and is generally one of the strongest attacks or spells. It has come to be associated with strong magic users.

Burst

Description: Burst (バースト, Bāsuto?), also known as Surge, is a recurring spell in Final Fantasy series. It inflicts major lightning-elemental damage.

Dark

Description: Dark (ダーク, Dāku?), also known as Darkness, is a recurring, low-level spell in the series. It inflicts minor Dark-elemental damage and is a basic spell much like Fire, Blizzard, Thunder, and Water. It has three upgrades in the form of Darkra, Darkga, and a stronger version in the form of Darkja, which is usually an enemy ability.

Meteor (Comet)

Description: Meteor (メテオ, Meteo?), also known as Meteo, Desolator (ミーティア, Mītia?, lit. Meteor), and Shake, is a recurring spell in the series. Usually one of the strongest spells, it summons a barrage of meteorites to bombard enemies. It either does high non-elemental damage, or hits for mediocre damage multiple times. Meteor's downgraded form is Comet, which sometimes acts as a replacement for Meteor when Meteor is not a usable spell. Meteor is often the Black Magic equivalent and opposite of the Holy spell as the Ultimate Black Magic in games where the spell Flare is not considered as such.

Quake

Description: Quake (クエイク, Kueiku?) is a recurring Black Magic spell in the Final Fantasy series. It usually deals Earth-elemental damage to one or all opponents, and may not affect flying enemies, depending on the game. It has two stronger versions, Quakra and Quaga, and a counterpart exclusive to enemies called Earthquake.

Tornado

Description: Tornado (トルネド, Torunedo?), also known as Weak, Wind, and W Wind, is a recurring spell and ability in the Final Fantasy series. It most often deals strong Wind-elemental damage, but may also reduce targets to single digit health.

Ultima

Description: Ultima (アルテマ, Arutema?) is a recurring spell in the Final Fantasy series. It is almost always the most powerful spell, hitting all enemies for non-elemental damage, often ignoring defense, Reflect and any other protection. With the exception of its debut appearance in Final Fantasy II, Ultima is considered to be Black Magic. Ultima usually manifests as an explosive sphere of blue or green energy that consumes opponents.

Water (Aqua/Flood)

Description: Water (ウォータ, Wōta?), also known as Aqua, is a Water-elemental spell, which first appeared in Final Fantasy VIII. When it appears, it is often the sole ability capable of inflicting Water-elemental damage to the enemy save for the summon Leviathan.

We have meteor in the game multiple times over. The black mage LB3, a black mage NPC later in the stormblood story, a dungeon, AND a 24-man raid boss attack. Quake is also in the game in trials as boss attacks. Ultima is used only in cutscene and will never fall into the WoL/D hands because its a forbidden magic.

Apocalypse is more than likely under the same veil as Ultima. On top of that regardless, these moves are way too big and iconic to be limited to regular skills. Limit Break 3 at best, but even then certain things of lore fall wayward that say yea or nay (besides dev speak).

We basically already have burst in thunder 4.
Dark is used exclusively by NPC's in this game, meaning it could see life as a BLU spell.
Comet is essentially the Mage LB 2.
WHMs should probably be able to cast water, but they'd need to find a way to make it fit in with the rotation.
Quake is used by NPC's a lot as well, but it would probably end up a WHM spell here due to the elemental affinities of the jobs (I don't think BLMs can use Earth Aether, I'd have to check), Tornado too would be WHM.

Why not Red Mage? They're already having Verstone / Veraero, could see Quake and Tornado as some kind of finisher versions of those spells. Would even fit into their mana mechanic.

In FFXIV, Red Mages are using replicas of White or Black magic. For a spell to exist on a RDM version (pun lol), it needs to exist on the White Mage (Aero, Stone, Holy, Cure, Raise) or Black Mage (Thunder, Fire, Flare) before, unless it's a pure "red magic" spell (Jolt, Impact)

Is this mandatory? Haven't followed the Red Mage development much. I mean they can call it Verquake and Vertornade (or better, Verlwind... that's my pun now!) or whatever. Does Quake / Tornado be already in game for other jobs to be available for Red Mage?

Mandatory I can't tell, but it the job's logic. RDM basically "copy" the magic they saw used by White Mages and Black Mages. So it does not make sense for RDMs to use VerTornado or VerQuake if Tornado and Quake don't appear in the game in the first place. :)


VerUltima could work because we kinda see it on Ultima Weapon and we could want to replicate it through Red Magic.

It would defeat the setting of the class if they could use more powerful spells than the classes they're borrowing from, in ffxiv and any other game.
The main issue being that if they can cast, say, quake or tornado, it immediately begs the question why white mages can't use them.
Unless they DO give these spells to white mage in ShB, then hey no problemo.

That's not exactly true, though I can see the confusion. Thunder IV is Thundaja, which is the 4th tier of the Thunder line of spells. Burst would be tier 5 if anything on par with Flare and Freeze. If anything Foul is like Burst. A little annoying now that it's not called that huh, lol.

That's not exactly accurate. RDMs aren't using replicas of the spells, they are using the "true" version of the spells; Ver, in a basic form meaning true, but also proper, genuine, in Latin, and also it being a pun on Vermillion. They are using the spells as they were originally intended, but in balance, so as to not cause another calamity. RDMs are the descendants of the WHMs and BLMs who fled to Gyr Abania, but learned from their mistakes.

I want smn to get Osmose. It could be an ability that places a dot on an enemy that also heals your pet over time like a better sustain or maybe it drains a % amount of hp from your pet to heal yourself or a target party member, upgrade for physick maybe? Would definitely come in handy but wouldn't be spamable like Vercure since it's at the cost of your pet's hp.

I actually want more Ruin spells, but not in the way you're thinking. I'd like to use the current Ruin spells to vary up the filler rotation instead of the hack job that Ruin III/IV got this expansion. Ideally return to the old Ruin III, but give it to us in the form of the Ruin IV proc. Otherwise hard limit it to DWT when you get it. Do the same with Ruin IV as a replacement for Ruin II, but then expand on the proc to allow you to use both outside DWT more often. Maybe even let you store them up a bit for burst situations.

I could see adding Ruin V during Bahamut specifically too in a similar manner, but I'd only want that as a way to use procs during his phase.

While this would not be a bad idea, SE isn't that receptive when it comes to SMN until the literal crap has hit the fan via SBs realease of SMN.

All I can see them doing is replacing Ruin III with the next teir and replacing our further ruin proc with Ruin V becuase if anything SE is predictable when it comes to changes to the ruin spell. That's why I said I rather no more ruin madness but if they can do something interesting like you mentioned I wouldn't be opposed.

Technically, Ultima is actually used by an enemy in the game. As I recall, God Kefka uses the full Ultima spell in O8S.
I'd still like to see RDM get Ardor at some point as a shoutout to it being used on the job in FFXII's Zodiac system. Not sure if there's too many others that haven't shown up in one form or another.

O8s doesn't actually happen though lore wise, its a what if scenario brought about by the wandering minstrel embellishing things, thats why these fights can be so catastrophically powerful.

Any chance they will increase the duration of bio and miasma to 45 or 60 second or or make a spell that refresh both of these duration with single press to make SMN rotation less scram with button press?

tbh i don't see the urgent in dot improvement... currently we are not used to use dot-hardcast that often... do we?

Terminology-wise, "the Ardor" is the Ascians' term for Calamities/Rejoinings, so using it as a spell name might be a bit odd.

what about meltdown? thats a spell not in the game yet.

I'd love one more (new) DoT that interacts with Fester, bringing its potency to 450 or even 500.

I simply mentioned it as a matter of interest to the conversation. I don't think this discussion was limited to what's strictly "canon" or not within the game. If we are going lore-wise, in the case of the Omega savage fights, these are actually further simulations run by Omega to continue testing the WoL's abilities.

To be fair, we also have an Ultima Weapon, an Ultima spell, and Ultima the High Seraph all within the scope of the game. I don't think it would be that strange to have an Ardor spell, especially when the Ascians have used that terminology so sparsely. I don't recall it having been used since post-ARR.

if thing happen like ppl predict, then in 5.0 we deal with empire, and finally in 6.0 we deal with ascian, so it's time for WoL up their game a little bit

Death or DOOM for blm if targets hp is at a certain point it can install kill it and if above a certain percentage it deals large amounts of damage

YES!!! Give SCH Meltdown, they need a nice burst AoE spell. Besides BLM, who have enough burst moves, SCH is the only job to be known to have it. Just please don't name it Klausta or whatever they called it in XI.

Doom is already on Blue Mage.

Death is primarily one of the most powerful Black Magic spells.

Blue Mage has Lvl 5 Death as a more consistent version with a specific condition.

Isn't veraero from white mage aero spell. Then why does it add black magic to the gauge. Because verstone is from white mage spell to and gives white magic to gauge.

Veraero does not add black mana to the RDM's mana gauges. Both Veraero and Verstone add white mana, while Verfire and Verthunder add the black mana.

I'm no game dev, so I can't suggest anything that wouldn't feel balance-breaking, but these are some cool things I'd love to see with classic spells:

SCH is the best candidate for Meltdown as either a single target upgrade to broil or a proc that changes Miasma II to deal all its AoE DoT damage upfront without applying the DoT.

WHM should get both Quake and Tornado. If lilies remain, I'd love for the lilies to proc off more than single target heals, and for the lilies themselves to change Stone to Quake, and Aero III to Tornado, dealing DoT damage upfront without applying the DoT. More lilies, higher potencies. There's also room here to reintroduce Fluid Aura as a lilies-only ground-targeted oGCD renamed Flood.

Osmose feels like it could be integrated as a RDM-original spell in XIV's lore, maybe as a timed buff that makes spells cost half MP, or lets melee combo recover MP at a % of damage dealt.

If we ever got an Arcane casting job, the Dark line of spells would be a better fit there than for BLU. I think there was a job in XII like that? Their version of RDM I think. If we ever end up getting that Onmyouji job that I've heard get tossed around, feels like a prime candidate.

A RDM-original AoE finisher spell would be nice, although I don't know that any classic series spells would be the way to go there.

First: Meteor is already the BLM LB3. (In PvP, their Limit Break is also named "Cometeor".)

Second: Ultima exists within the canon of XIV, and is demonstrated during The Praetorium. As Ultima has been shuffled between White and Black Magic many times within the series, I expect XIV is going with the interpretation that it belongs to neither school, particularly since it was a capability of the Ultima Weapon, an Allagan machine that predates the War of the Magi and needed to consume three Primals -- gods given form by pure aether -- to cast it.
In short, nobody gets it, good day sir.

Third: Earth, Wind and Water magic fall under the purview of Conjury, not Thaumaturgy or Arcanima. Should Quake, Tornado, and Flood ever be added, they would either be given to a White Mage or (Yoshi-P willing) a Geomancer. Hopefully some form of offensive Water magic will be added to WHM and RDM.

Given it falls under the same line as Freeze and Flare throughout the series, Burst is most likely to be an advanced Lightning spell for BLM in the future, possibly even their level 80 spell. Who knows how BLM will change in ShB, but I can only hope we finally see the lightning spells as more than self-contained DoTs through Burst, perhaps even tied back into Enochian.
(That or... just rename Thundercloud. It'd basically be the same thing.)

With all the obvious ones out of the way, that leaves... Apocalypse and Dark. Admittedly I have been curious if Foul is intended to be BLM's attempt to utilize Dark-type magic, given the lack of precedent or lore behind it. There's no "Dark-elemental" in XIV (and to be fair, elemental damage is mostly for the player's benefit than the enemy's detriment), so there's not really a particular place for them.
Assuming Apocalypse isn't marked off as an equal to Ultima (and the fact that it's been used as a Grimoire name doesn't remove it from being a spell), I could see it being the "ultimate Black Magic" to be learned when BLM reaches level 100 or somesuch, or perhaps some type of high damage DRK skill to put its output closer to WAR's now that Yoshi-P is enforcing the MT/OT balance with GUN.
Or, maybe we'll see both of these in the hands of a future DoM, like a Necromancer or Void-based class -- Dark as a Lv1 spell, Apocalypse as a limit break.
