As long as I don't see any offical statement I can't really expect anything.
The point on Armor construction in the art department is very realistic; i fear people won't agree with that excuse, but it's very legitimate.
People have to look at this in the perspective of a game developer.
Then in your looking to the wrong place for a answer for that. In the interview Yoshi said they had just got back into the office and started looking at the feedback to the point he asked MrHappy what the NA reaction to the new races were. We wont see anything maybe until next week. The races are sounding incredibly rushed to the point we don't even have headgear set for them
the thing that I get is his mentions fans wanting a more animalistic/beast race, but in almost every MMO they make up a small minority of the playerbase (as low as 2% in some games) and that's with having them from release and not having to pay to race change or re-lvl and put yourself behind.
So from a game development standpoint it doesn't make sense unless they believe they can create a beast race that everyone and their mother is going to love and that will have more player then the potential for male Viera. ( know a lot of people who enjoyed the race in 12 and A2 who wanted to know what the males looked like, so it's chance not only to get those currently playing that are interested, but those who aren't)
@Quizotic
I think the point of a beast race even if not the most played is that it fills a void FFXIV had, pretty boy viera fills no void. Viera Male /will/ be played if available though, so I think it's worth making too. Just that for those who wanted beast at best they only had comprise options at worst they had no options (thus I call it a void), meanwhile if you wanted pretty man and you feel like you can't make one right now then I'd have to say we must be playing different games lol. To be clear though I do think we should want to see both races unlocked as it would be cool and set world balance, but personally am glad Hrothgar became a thing.
Yes and I hope that the community watches the video or reads his interview which can be found here.
Interviews are considered official statements... as for a post on the forum I believe during the interview he said he is most likely going to make one on here. And if you read the interview he doesn't say no nor does he say yes. It is a possibility for the future.
I guess that thing that really worries me with said beast race is from what I can gather from the statements given they were already in development before Viera were on the table.
where they not confident enough in their work to say "let's finish this race (male and female) and give them bunnys (male and female) next expansion?
In regards to Races, I know I've seen people asking for something akin to Ronso so it was out. And it does make since in terms of development stand point. It was also refreshing to hear them finally admit their meta on healing (one pure healer) isn't work with what the community is doing. It will be interesting to see how they go about changing WHM and AST considering those are the two jobs at each extreme. Also good to see Yoshi-P admit it might not be a good idea to keep things so secret.
Well as the interview said, the community really wanted Viera before HW. It was a way for them to try and give the community both sides without hurting the development team in the process.
I agree with this too, Hrothgar do fill a niche that none of the other races (or male viera) do. I just think deciding to genderlock it and release it alongside viera was a mistake just because viera is such a fan favorite race to begin with. They had to know people were going to want males and females of it, so people are going to feel slighted even if that wasn't the intent. It was pretty much a repeat of the miqote situation all over, since people from FF 11 were already fans of mithra to begin with and wanted a male counterpart.
Btw though, I always appreciate your replies to things. They're always thoughtful and well-intentioned. :3
This is the response I posted on the youtube video. Copy and pasting it here.
I think these are really good questions and I really liked some of the answers. Still not happy with their decision to do 2 incomplete races instead of 1 complete race but I think I can understand their reasoning. Hopefully they will considering adding the other gender's in the future.
Still mildly angry that Gunbreaker is a tank and not a DPS but DNC uses chakrams so... woot. What he says about healer jobs seems to make sense but I don't play them so I hope healers get lucky with the reworks.
Not happy with his answers on Eureka or BLU mage but that's because I wasn't happy with either. I'd rather not have anymore limited jobs and I would really like the new relic weapon "not" be locked behind the new Eureka content. I hope they would make Eureka an option to getting the relic, even can be the fastest method to get it if necessary, just not the only option.
I think it would be cool to have the 8 man normal mode raids part of the story, but how do you do it? Do you have to beat the Main Quest each patch before you can do the 8 man raid? Do you do the 8 man raid before the MSQ? Then you also have the High End Raiders. If you make it so you do the MSQ then the raid you would need to make it so Savage raiders can do the raid right out of the gate regardless of completion of the MSQ... I see that being a really difficult decision.
Glad Mr. Happy actually asked tough relevant questions.
Healers aren't happy (well, some are not at least... it is never wise to speak for a whole or even a portion... I will say I speak for myself and have noticed several in the thread echoing similar sentiments), for the most part, but we're discussing it more in-depth in another thread...
Healers have been in a tough spot for awhile. We've been told for two expansions now that we are 'being balanced' and have NOT been. And now the past several interviews I have seen the comments have been 'make WHM easier' and 'nerf SCH' and now this... it leads me, at the very least, to be VERY worried about where the Healing class is going to be headed. I'm NOT feeling all that comfortable, really. It doesn't feel like the dev team knows what they want OR how the PLAYERS are playing things. While HE might have a 'vision' of things, that doesn't always translate into how the players are actually playing the game. And sometimes that doesn't always turn out for the best. But we'll have to just wait and see.
he is damn right
how did people expect a new healer let alone knowing its going to be the dancer
same goes with the other races
Well, YISUG, probably because we've been told twice now that they were 'balancing' our role and have failed to do so(or butchered it so badly it required entire expansions to correct it...). And we're a little fatigued to get told it AGAIN. It's a little stale now. And now we're looking at basically being told 'welp, tear it all down!' so it's a little... 'concerning'
Very disappointed in his statement about tanks, for exactly the reason Mr. Happy said - people who play Paladin want to be the stalwart defender that protects their party from damage. They need to take a big step back from the loud raid groups that give more feedback but don't actually comprise most of the players in the game.
And the statement about wanting a third ranged attacker still sounds incredibly stupid to me considering how many people do things using the duty finder. The rest about wanting to balance healers and fix the problem of only having two kinds - HP healing or damage shields - all makes perfect sense though, and it's good to know they recognize the issues that maybe prevented them from working on a new healer.
I still don't care about new races and don't understand why anyone else does, but it's good for those people to get such detailed answers I guess.
My take away from the Mr.Happy interview was the devs are finally admitting their stead fast design of healing as a whole isn't working; They always stood by in the decision that WHM is only going to heal with nothing else. I guess they are also disappointed that each job isn't really defined other than heals and shields. I said in 3.0 that AST being able to heal or shield wasn't a good design choice, it need it's own unique healing method that would be different from heal and shields.
What that means in actually changes? Hopefully it's not to the far extreme of removing shields. Rather I would hope they give utility to WHM. Maybe they fixed ACN buggy pet AI and SCH will have more use for fairies. AST will just be a regen healer that using gambling. Rather than having a main healer and off healer, both will be balanced enough to share the load equally among them.
It's because they don't want to make new races period. It's time consuming and taxing on the rest of the development, everything from adjusting past gear, facial movements, cut scenes, movement and so on. if they release one race now M/F and did another next expansion, not only will they have to make adjustments for every past expansion gear but for all the new gear between those two expansions. Considering how in FFXIV every race can play any class, just between expansions, tens of thousands of gear would need adjustment which is all time consuming. Which is why they said point blank they don't want to add new races after this. They wanted to make a beast type race that is vastly different from anything we currently have and at the same time give people Viera since it was a popular choice among fans. Just like bringing gunblade back since it's a popular weapon among fans. They didn't have time to do both M/F for each so they decided to gender lock. That way they can make a new race, something they wanted while also giving fans Viera something fans wanted. Creating new races and adjusting them to gear isn't easy, old players probably remember when we had ears sticking out of helmets and necks that would shrink because of gear.
I don't understand why it would be stupid, people like certain play styles, some like healing, some like casting, some like tanking and some like ranged melees. Been playing Archer/Bard since 1.0 and I like the play style of doing physical dmg from a distance. While I don't know if I would like dancer, always felt that we didn't get much in terms of gear/design and classes. So I'm rather happy they realize that ranged melees are a bit lacking.
I'm personally not that thrilled with the eureka answers myself. As far as BA goes, I have yet to even try it, so my comments will be related to the weapons.
As I mentioned in the thread asking for what people DON'T want to see in ShB, the reasons I personally preferred Zodiac/Anima were:
- You weren't locked to one type of content to do it.
- You could customize the weapon's stats to your desire from specific points onward in exchange for a very grindy step (this was the biggest selling point of it to me).
- You could either go for what was most efficient/time or do whatever you wanted to when you had options. Effort was always required either way.
Eureka:
- You're locked to one type of content.
- You're then given the determination of stats at random treatment after finishing the steps in the third phase. I didn't mind the 5 meld slots reward, but when I first learned of the random stat generation, I became heavily unmotivated.
- Encourages "AFK at camps" behavior...the very result of that just tells me the content isn't engaging enough.
I hope whatever the dev. team decides to do, they do it with factors like the above in mind. I don't know anyone personally who actually likes having random stats on these weapons (unless you got lucky), but to those that do, hey, more power to ya. I feel random stats should be limited to that pink aetherial gear, which we have not seen one single piece of since Diadem 2.0.
Sadly it's not so simple. While you can argue that the 3D models share similarities (Hyur female base body, so to speak, is also pretty much the base for the rest of the females) there are still rigs and morphs that have to be taken into consideration. Male vs female is even bigger because some armors change drastically in terms of shape depending on the gender (the tried and true coliseum gear, for example.) and also have to take into account, at least somewhat, any morphs the players applied to their characters (ex: female busts). Depending how they model the other genders, and if the armor piece in question changes based on gender; morphs, meshes, and rigs, it can all add up to be just as difficult. I only have a rudimentary knowledge of 3D modeling, so please don't quote me, but I'd imagine it's still just as difficult adding a gender as it is the new race. Especially if there is obvious sexual dimorphism between them.
That makes since. I was only thinking about headgear and failed to think about other stuff like what you mentioned. I was thinking that say once they got the headgear down to deal with Viera ears it would be easy to apply that to male Viera ears. I had forgot how some gear generally does look different on different genders. Not to mention the boobs... ah boobs... *drool*
If Male Vierra shares their meshes and textures With Midlander Like Au'Ra, Elezen, and Miqote do then that would make things easier! and all those races have in my option very different body types! Alot of the work would be in the Helmets/headgear and the new body morph for the gear.
I get that to be honest, Viera is huge... and finally seeing a mystery race is probably very exciting for those who were wondering what they'd look like (and hoping to try them out). I actually imagine the debate inside the dev team was pretty heated and likely it came down to "do we want to start the work now on two races trying to create a diverse cast (especially the beast), or complete one fully that'll be popular at least and never make another one because everyone in here is screaming at the top of their lungs when I say "new race"?" lol. Thousands of gears needing to be adjusted, I bet you can see the knowing in their eyes as the huge wall of work comes running at them - late nights galore.
I think it's possible that this gender-lock might have been our only route to two races though, maybe we'd otherwise only have one. It might be impossible to say for sure if that's true, but if we picture it like that perhaps people can find more peace with it? (it sounds like a possible reality to me at least).
I understand some people would be fine with just one, but let's say in a few years after everyone is used to having both (assuming, and hopefully, they unlock both)-- I think we'll be in a better place overall because of it (with a wide range of choices for players old and incoming new to pick). Of course if they had the resources to make two full races at the get go.. that'd be pretty epic, but I can't begin to fathom what stuff costs and how much time they have available to get it done so all I can say would be "that'd be epic" haha. To be honest I try to actively avoid playing "accountant" when asking for stuff and just try to be very patient instead, maybe sometimes preface my more extreme requests with "I'm sorry but I still like this idea, here let me try to explain it as best as I can" lol.

<3.. Thank you :3. It's been great discussing stuff with you in the other thread - you've been fun and reasonable, was never afraid you'd come at me with the fury of a thousand bunnies :D and rather we could just discuss stuff together (which has been nice).
The words OT and MT coming up in the write-up is sort of... Worrying.
Au Ra (particularly the men) are a curious mix of "inhuman" features - horns, scales and possibly eerie eyes - on an a face that's actually quite human*. It's an interesting juxtaposition and I like it, but I thought it's as close to a playable beast race as the lore writers would be willing to go.
Up until now, I would have said it's that human-like face that is the clear dividing line between whether the race are considered "men" or dismissed as beastmen, but Hrothgar put a serious wrench in that understanding. Even putting aside the blurrier difference in regions beyond Eorzea, these new races still need to go through ARR's storyline where beastmen seem to be universally feared and reviled.
To some extent it'll just go in the same pile as all the other times where player race is ignored (Duskwights in Gridania; Au Ra meeting Yugiri; etc.) but it seems a lot more glaring.
* some Au Ra faces from the character creator are actually reused as 'unique' faces for non-Auri characters. Edmont is definitely based on Au Ra face #4, and I suspect Aymeric and Lucia might be male face #3 and female #4, but they don't have such instantly recognisable features so it's harder to be sure.
Since NA gets shafted with job reveals, they should reveal the job role in NA and then the jobs itself at EU/Japan fanfest.Quote:
We need to maybe change the way to present new jobs at Fan Festivals. Perhaps reveal the roles first and then reveal the job later to subvert expectations.
Indeed. Gear for a late-addition second gender is far more likely to be remodeled from other races of the same gender, than the opposite gender of the same race. (Depending on hypothetical female Hrothgar design, I suppose...)
Curiously, I'd read somewhere that male Elezen actually share models with Roegadyn rather than the human-proportioned characters - which is rather odd but does probably explain why things sometimes scale oddly on Elezen. The best "proof" I'm aware of is that the monk Lv50 relic gear actually has a few different shirt designs - from memory, Hyur, Au Ra and Miqo'te have a high-necked black undershirt, but Elezen and Roegadyn only have the collar as a necklace.
(Can see for yourself - go into character creator, go through to job selection, pick monk, set the character to wear job gear, then backtrack to character creation and compare.)
I've wondered about that. Whether maybe someone higher up said "no more races, we're not giving you the budget for it" so they put in the two half-races exactly because they knew the fandom would rage and demand the other half...
They still could have handled the reveal better. Especially confirming we had something other than Viera coming, "please look forward to it", and getting a lot of that rage out of the way early. Then at least there would be some excitement for the second reveal in itself, rather than being overshadowed by the full extent of the negative reaction.
Yoshi did tell Happy to convey that nothing is set in stone yet when it comes to how the jobs will be balanced. So while it's worrying now, it doesn't necessarily mean that this is how the Jobs will be come launch. We just have to wait until May to see what they've done with them.
I'm going to be careful with my words, but lets say I know from experience that Elezen shares with Midlander and that Roe has its own category. I have looked into it and it seems to be the case that Elezen is a Midlander based race and Roe is all by itself, though I wonder if male Hrothgar will share with it since they are very similar.
Extremely nervous about this MT/OT balance viewpoint. Last thing I want is to see anyone argue “you are not a real tank, we need a real tank” arguments.
Disappointed they really don’t understand the natural expectation of 4th Healer to go with the 4th tank. Virtually all reactions to the first reveal was “obviously the other job will be healer.” They would have to ignore all the community reaction to had been surprised at the disappointment.
I actually can I understand their art limitations for the races.
Still extremely disappointed with BLU and the whole limited job fiasco. Sadly my interpretation is the only thing in the table is wether or not there will be another limited job, it does not sound like BLU losing its limited status would ever be an option, but maybe I misunderstand his statement.
I really don't want Hrothgar to share Roe's model even if it's easier to just retexture and rig it so it hunches over like it appears to be in the video... I don't want Hrothgar to have orangutan syndrome. Roe's legs look shorter than they should for their body. I want Hrothgar to be proportioned right. However in the reveal video they appear to have the same problem so perhaps I shouldn't hope.
That does seem more probable overall.
Seems curious to me that Au Ra don’t get their own separate category too, though - some things scale quite oddly on them and they could do with some better unique modelling. (I’m still annoyed that the Lv70 summoner gear basically stabs them in the face.)
