Game freezes and lags

So the game plays great when I first log in and play. After about 10 minutes, the audio begins to lag and then the video is next. It gets to the point where the game is nearly unplayable if I continue to play through it.

I tried to change some of the resolution settings and also tried to get into windowed mode, both crash the game.

Updated my drivers, didnt fix. Restarted, didnt fix. Uninstalled and reinstalled the game, didnt fix.

Just bought the game, 60 bucks gone in a game I cannot enjoy. Someone please help.

How long have you been experiencing this issue? Is there an error message that appears when the game crashes? Have there been any recent updates or changes on the PC? On the system report, I noticed your graphics drivers are from 2017. Please update them as a new one is available.

I updated the graphics card and when I use a different internet connection, the problem behaves similarly. Sound first, then graphics second.

Can you elaborate on the lag you are having? Can you post a video or something so we can better visualize it?

When did this first start happening? Do you recall anything updating/changing on your PC that coincides with this?

You may want to try a clean boot, Simply open the task manager and select the 'Start up' tab. Disable everything here and restart the PC. This will make sure that no background processes are interfering with the game. Make sure you don't have any other programs open (especially overlays) while playing the game.

Trying a clean boot now. I'll get you results after update.

ok, so after performing a clean boot, nothing has changed. The game still lags as seen in the video. Again, I have a friend playing on that connection without issues. I can play on other internet connections with the same issue occurring. The game has always ran like this for the entirety of me playing it. I have never played this game without this lag.

Plays fine for 10 minutes, on a laptop? I would check CPU and GPU temps first :/

85 for gpu and 87 for CPU when lag occurred. Memory at 58%. Seems to be taxing the CPU and GPU when the spikes hit. CPU got up to 85% under my performance meters on my Dragon Gaming Center during the spikes.

Celsius, I assume (proper maths). Anyways CPU temps is getting up there, GPU temps is possibly in the throttling range. Usually that is set by each laptop manufacturer depending on the cooling capacity. You may need to download a GPU monitor such as GPU-Z or anything that'll let you see if, and why it's throttling. Also the 960m isn't super powerful, it should play the game on lower settings just fine though. I would definitely recommend using V-sync and lower settings until you can get a constant framerate matching your default refresh rate. This will lower GPU and CPU utilization, it also looks better and FFXIV isn't a twitch game so you don need high framerates. I'm not saying thermals ARE your issue, but it's best to rule it out as it's easily done over digging through various software settings and driver revisions. Also make sure you're not on battery power, Gaming laptops need to be on mains power for gaming.

Correct. Something to note, those are the temps of my CPU and GPU upon start up as well. The gages are also not filling when the temps are at that level (display is a sliding bar with far right being full and far left being empty, which at those temps, the bar is completely empty). My point is, it seems to be by design. The game is at the lowest setting currently. Turned Vsync on, game still lags right on que.

I'll have to agree with Arrhin, it sounds like there may be some overheating with your system. It's possible that it's lowering the clock speeds of your CPU and GPU to prevent it from getting too hot. If you start with temperatures in the 80s, it's probably getting hotter so the system throttles itself from there (Temperatures of 90C or 100C can damage some equipment). How is your laptop set up? Are any vents being blocked?

Do you have the laptop running off the battery or is it plugged in? If it's running off the battery, it may also throttle to extend the life of the battery.

Also, if you have any overlays active (Discord Overlay, Geforce Experience, etc.) make sure to disable them while playing.

Just sitting on the table so no vents being blocked. It is plugged in. I have geforce experience, but have tried it on and off. It does not seems to make much of a difference. This may sound a bit crazy, but what if I tried to play outside when it is cold. If that fixes my issue, could it confirm overheating as the issue?

Oh my, so those are basically idle temps! An yes, anything you can do to reduce temps, even for diagnostic purposes, just be careful! If yer machine is older you could (if yer comfortable) attempt cleaning the fans etc. if they appear dirty. Do be careful if you've never done it before, look up a guide online, preferably specific to yer model. I think....the 960m will begin to throttle (reduce clockspeed) around 90 C depending on laptop manufacturer (Dells do it around 75 <.<) so you can confirm it with the correct software by connecting to a secondary display, even yer TV over HDMI. And like GM Einmimiria says *Bows* shut down any overlays or background software. Overlays can mess with FFXIV and any other processes will stress yer hardware further, increasing temps. GL and I hope you find summat conclusive!

Just wanted to let you know, it was definitely temps. I purchased a laptop cooling pad and bam, fixed. No lag. I am now looking into building a desktop to find a more permanent solution. Thanks mate!
