Steam Account - Need help for users that don't actually have FFXIV on their steam

So I am a legacy player. You know those hip cool kids from 1.0
I got a free copy of FFXIV ARR and naturally I wanted to get my friends in. At the time, I had a friend who wasn't a PC gamer and didn't have steam or anything. So I used my steam account to buy them a copy when it went on sale and just handed them the product code.

For the past 5 years they have been able to play the game using the regular client. Unfortunately we all know SE pulled a EA Games, or intends to. Problem is, this person doesn't actually have FFXIV on Steam. They used my code. It's not like I or anyone else knew SE didn't know how to Steam properly, but it is what it is.

So... what can we do going forward? They will no longer be able to play FFXIV period once this change goes live. Steam doesn't transfer game ownership under any circumstance. What can we do?

You're going to have to explain to me what you mean by '' Unfortunately we all know SE pulled a EA Games, or intends to.'' (I assume you mean the recent announcement that means you need to press the play button on steam, to play?)

I mean, aren't you just sharing your game library with them in the first place if you are the technical owner of the steam version of the game? And if you are not, then do and it should be solved?

Yeah, I have no idea what you mean by "SE pulled an EA Games"; maybe I'm just missing the context (EA's pulled a lotta shady stuff, you'll have to be more specific). But if you gave your friend a product code, and they used it, it's on their Steam account, even if you paid for it. Which means the only thing that's changing is they'll actually need to start up Steam before playing the game. Unless they're using your Steam account to play, or something?

He should have Steam or he wouldn't be able to activate the code, or am I wrong?

OP is saying they bought the game on their account so FFXIV is on their account, and they just gave their friend the code steam gave them. The friend didn't need steam to authenticate that they owned the game before. They will soon, though - Which means theor friend (who doesn't own the game through steam) will likely have to buy it on their account or start it through "alternative means" that are sure to come out when the change happens.

I wonder if the FFXIV code is already tied to the OP's Steam account? If so, their friend might be out of luck since even if they buy the game for their own Steam account they'd just get a fresh FFXIV account with no characters on it. Giving game codes away like that is a bit of a gray area and I wouldn't be surprised if there's something in the Steam ToS that prohibits it. I hope you do find a solution but it may be best to mentally prepare for the worst.

I realize it's too late in this case, but for future reference when you want to buy someone something on Steam it's best to buy it as a gift so the recipient can add it to their own library.

They're not - Steam is only for purchasing the game/expansions (which gives you a mogstation code), Steam Wallet for optional items (which are delivered after logging into mogstation), and installing the base launcher/game the same way downloading it from the Square Enix store does.

You don't seem to understand - the other person does not have FFXIV in their steam library. I gave them a code, they registered it on mog station. They have never -prior to this update- needed to use steam. A FFXIV Steam code was the same as retail to them.

This update means that, since they do not have FFXIV in their steam library, FFXIV will be unplayable. A problem that SE created when there wasn't one. This means they will have to repurchase FFXIV since Steam does not allow you to transfer. Pulled an EA Games

To be clear it's not like anyone knew in 2013 how bad the steam version was. No one knew it was restricted, I thought it just another way to grab a product code. Other MMOs do not behave like this. Some Free to Play ones let you download the client and link it to your steam account, but SE is has to make the simple complicated 6 years in.

Also, the steam version isn't "bad". It's literally 100% the same game. You just download the original installer through Steam, which then patches the game (which is again, a 1:1: copy of the non-steam version).

This update will kind of be a pain, but there will be ways to launch the game without using steam.

Steam may not transfer game ownership, but can your friend not create their own Steam account and purchase their own copy of FFXIV from Steam?

This. They only need to purchase the base game (Starter Edition) and ignore the codes it gives them. Then just launch the game via Steam and login to their current account.

It depends on how steam authentication will work, if the steam and ff14 account needs to be correctly linked (and it'll have to check if the account you try to log into is a steam account, so this is not an odd thing to expect), he'd be out of luck and has to either start from scratch, or start playing on PS4 instead.

The friend doesn't have a Steam account, but has a working FFXIV account that is linked to the Steam version of the game. So the friend should just need to fill in the missing half, by creating a Steam account and purchasing FFXIV with that Steam account, and then using the already existing FFXIV account with that version of the game.

Except if Steam checks the SE licence keys on the account figures out they don't match and prevents access. In fact depending on how many checks they do and how eager they are to enforce the new rules both the OP and their friend might end up being served a ban from Steam. The OP for giving a key away they owned, and the friend for "buying" it (even if it was a gift it wasn't done via the correct system). Now a Steam ban isn't going to affect the OP at all, since their PC licence means they can access FFXIV from the usual launcher - but the OP won't be able to track their game hours in Steam anymore, they may not even be able to use the overlay since I've no idea how or if it will be possible to add FFXIV as a non-Steam game. (The Steam overlay doesn't always work with games added to the Steam library as non-Steam games.) And obviously ban or no, if Steam does a licence check, the friend will lose access to FFXIV permanently.

Or square enix could do the ethical thing and let players opt out of the steam account version and convert to a regular version. The steam version sucks

I still don't understand. The license is for installing and running the FFXIV software. There should be no issue there with Steam if the friend makes a new FFXIV purchase with their own Steam account. Once the software is running, you should be able to login with any FFXIV account with a valid Windows Steam license.

Ok how do you think the normal launcher is going to check that I am a Steam user? The only way that SE could prevent me from logging in via the normal launcher downloaded and installed from SE's own website is by checking my SE account for my licence keys. Now it could be a simple PC/Steam check OR it could be a check to ensure that my Steam account keys match my SE account keys. The way ESO's worked was the latter. I knew a few people caught out by this because in ESO you could mix and match PC/Steam keys. If it is checking for an exact match between Steam keys and SE keys the friend will lose access to their account because the keys will not match.

Ok, so with ESO, if both you and your friend play ESO on Steam, can you use your friend's PC and login and play with your ESO account on their ESO installation?

Only if you login to your own Steam account on their PC, you cannot log into your ESO account from someone else's Steam account. Let me try again.

The OP's friend has the OP's Steam key-
Steam Key 1 (Old) ABC
This key is not applied to the OP's friend's steam account for obvious reasons.

The OP's friend buys a new copy of FFXIV on Steam-
Steam Key 2 (New) XYZ

But what is on the Friend's SE account is the old key-
SE Key: ABC

Steam checks the Steam key XYZ, against the SE account key, ABC and finds they don't match. The OP's friend cannot access FFXIV.
There is no flag in the SE account system to determine a Steam account from a PC account. It has to check the keys themselves.

On Mog Station, it says I have a standard (steam) account type, maybe it will just check that and that I'm running on FFXIV from Steam.

If you have a PC version of the game that column on the mog station reads PC. Both Steam keys and PC keys are "Windows" keys to the database - this is the reason why we can't just rebuy the game as a PC licence. If you try to input a PC key for ARR it tells you you already have that game applied to your account - not that they keys are incompatible. The incompatible check comes up only if you are adding a game/expac you don't have that doesn't match the other keys - either because it's the wrong region or because it's PC rather than Steam.

Basically, there are three possible outcomes:

1. Worst case: The launcher will check against all registered keys, and reject accounts that have mismatching keys (as in, keys that weren't registered on the same steam account). This means the account is essentially permabanned from PC.
2. The launcher will check only against the most recently registered key. In this case, you might be allowed to transfer to different steam account, but you'd have to buy the game again, and the next expansion, and might be locked out until shadowbringers comes out. SE can alternatively also allow users to change the steam account their service account is linked to (although I think that's not part of the initial implementation).
3. Best case: The launcher only checks if an account is a steam account, and whether a valid steam key is used to log in (even if expansions don't match). Then you'd be able to log into any steam service account on any steam account, meaning you can still play at a friend's place, and the OPs friend should still be fine. He'd still have to get his own steam version of the game though.

We do not how things will be implemented, so I guess the only option is to just wait, and be prepared for disappointment.

Technical issues shouldn't be relevant here. The fact that PC and Steam are considered the same platform is a business decision, not a technical one.

Presumably, that won't matter in this case if the friend sticks to Steam.

Could the friend not install the XIV Trial version on steam, make a trial account, and then thereafter sign in using their original account credentials?

Expansion purchases would still have to be made on OP's account, but the trial version launcher accepts full version login credentials last I checked. Has this changed?

This seems like one big can of worms..

It seems that everyone is sorta just guessing as to what the outcome will be. Have you tried perhaps contacting support and getting some insight from them?

why they need separate license is just dumb understandable ps4 but
PC and steam should be the same and work what ever platform you buy them from

I contacted Steam - they made a one-time exception (I posted squares note) and they said its not eligible for a refund HOWEVER since i've never requested one and this is outside the norm, they refunded me the purchase price. I then used the $24 they gave me to buy my friend a copy of it for his account.
However they did not refund the expansions. I don't think he'll have problems logging in though. Besides Edgelords gives the previous ones with it so...

I have no idea why Square Enix needed to further break a system with a solution no one asked for.
It's kind of like "hey this system is kind of broken, but what if it was somehow made worse?"

For users who possess a Square Enix account with multiple service accounts (specifically ones that have both Steam and Windows licenses), the check on if it was launched from the Steam app occurs when the service account is selected on the start screen. If you select a Steam service account when using the Windows version of the launcher, you will be given an error and have to select a Windows service account to proceed. Otherwise, you will need to launch the Steam version to use the Steam service account.

Hopefully that clears it up!

I personally purchased the game on Steam in June 2014, before Heavensward even existed. There was no warning to say that we would forever be locked into purchasing all expansions via Steam, or that years later we'd later be forced to run the game via Steam. It was well known you could just run the game directly and over the last 5 years that's become even more common knowledge. I don't mean to sound rude, but to treat PC Steam and PC non-Steam players differently is discrimination. Everyone paid the same fees for the game/expansions/subscriptions, why are you treating your customers differently? And to announce it now, after pre-orders have started and people have already paid on Steam...?

I appreciate the official reason is "to align even more closely with Steam policies", but SE isn't exactly a small company. Are we really supposed to believe that after 5 years you have no leverage at all with Steam? This was your deal with Steam, not ours. If you're going to implement this change of policy at least only apply it to new accounts going forward and let the rest of us out of this Steam nightmare that we've been trapped in.

Does the FFXIV Steam service account have to match the Steam account that is logged in to the Steam client when running the Steam version of the launcher or would any valid FFXIV Steam service account work?

Steam is a gaming platform separate from windows, everything you get there must stay there. There is no need of any warning, you just need to read the terms of agreement you accepted when you registered on Steam.

When some games "tolerate" launch outside Steam, it is a plus (or a bug) you cannot take for granted.

No it doesn't - it tells us nothing we don't already know, that Steam users will have no choice but to launch via Steam.

Given you can't have PC and Steam on the same accounts and Steam users that bought back in ARR were never told until after HW pre orders went live that we'd be locked into Steam for the rest of our lives. Even after HW launched we were never told "oh in the future you are going to have to have your Steam account connected every time you want to play". You've also not told us what happens if specific keys don't match (is it just an account flag? if so why can't those of us concerned have our flag changed to PC?)

What will happen if (like ESO) the Steam auth servers are down for significant periods? Is it the players' responsibility to document when the servers are down and how long they are down for in order to get compensation? What will happen if they are up in hours we can't play (due to work or sleep) but down during our own timezone's peak period? Will PAL only be deemed affected if the auth servers are down during EU peak? Also when can we expect to be forced on to Steam Wallet for our sub payments? And are the Steam checks done by regional servers? (Can I expect a 1k ping because my PAL account has to go to the EU and back to log into the game from Australia?)

Finally, SE has resisted this policy for over 18 months, so why change now?

there's literally no difference between the 2 versions of the game, its just a button before the launcher pops up. You barely have to interact with Steam at all.

When you bought Heavensward (or Stormblood), you had the option to buy it for standalone or Steam version, so some blame does befall the player in this case, if they chose the 'wrong' version because it 'worked anyway'.

I think you can check which version you have in your MogStation.
If you bought Steam keys, and thus have a Steam-linked SE account, then it's a simple matter of applying said keys to Steam (if not done already), and playing it from Steam. You can disable the Steam interface in a game if it bothers you.

Make sure to copy your layouts and macros to the SE cloud first, if you end up switching over... doing it manually is a bit of a pain.

Wouldn't this be as simple as "adding a non-steam game to my library"? Or even possibly "activate a product on steam" using the original code?

Honestly I'm not that bothered about having to purchase expansions off Steam, at launch they're the same price anyway, what I am concerned about is that the Steam version is getting more and more restrictions added to it and I'm concerned as to what's going to be next.

It's been a "plus (or a bug)" for over 5 years now. It's enabled us to run the game at friends houses who don't have Steam, it's enabled us to run the game from a USB drive, it's enabled us to run two services accounts at a time and I'm sure there are some players who don't even have access to their Steam account any more, I have no idea what they're going to do... I don't think most people even realise/read the launcher news so it will cause a lot of confusion when all of a sudden they have to change how they run the game once this update arrives.

Sorry, but I think you've misunderstood the problem. When Heavensward was released this was the first time we found out there was any difference between Steam and non-Steam, even though it had been sold on Steam for over a year. There was no option for us to "buy it for standalone or Steam version", we *had* to buy the Steam version. Non-Steam Heavensward keys simply do not work.

You can't convert a Steam account to a non-Steam account (or vice versa). That's what we want SE to let us do, but they're saying no.

yeah, because what else at the time gave reason to notify players of this? the expansions were limited to each version you bought the game in, and this was the first expansion. When ARR first launched, did they even know they were going to work on an expansion considering the state of the game at the time? Is it really valid to say "we didnt know at the time" when SE could have also not known at the time?

When you bought Heavensward (or Stormblood), you had the option to buy it for standalone or Steam version, so some blame does befall the player in this case, if they chose the 'wrong' version because it 'worked anyway'.

I think you can check which version you have in your MogStation.
If you bought Steam keys, and thus have a Steam-linked SE account, then it's a simple matter of applying said keys to Steam (if not done already), and playing it from Steam. You can disable the Steam interface in a game if it bothers you.

Make sure to copy your layouts and macros to the SE cloud first, if you end up switching over... doing it manually is a bit of a pain.

If you bought ARR from Steam and bought any version of HW other than the one from Steam, the key would not work for your account. There has never been any out, other than switching from PC to Mac or PS4. Once you go Steam, you're stuck with it forever.
