Possible mistakes on unfolded map of Othard

Hey everyone

So I have noticed some mistakes on the unfolded map of Othard revealed in the last part of Return to Ivalice.

As you can see, the name above Rabanastre says "Dalmasca", this is wrong since that is the name of the country, not the city-state.

Furthermore it's said in part 2 of Return to Ivalice, that an inland sea known as the Valnard Sea is south of Rabanastre, and contains the Ridorana Cataract. This piece of information is nowhere to be found on the map.

as with most maps often the knowledge of the mapmaker is key to what actually ends up on a map, something to remember is nothing ingame is done from a gods eye perspective, that particular map may have been chosen by fran because it had the feature on it she needed, and didnt care whether the ridorana was on it or not

what im more curious about is when we get the final updated world map for 5.0 (the one we as players will actually use) will those details be included in the map, and are details being intentionally omitted from that map by devs to prevent potential spoilers later

also super SUPER happy valnain is on that map for reasons

Dalmasca should say Rabanastre, I'll agree. Though there's likely some mapmaker confusion similar to the Ruby Tide/Sea at play here that I'm sure we'll find out about.

That said, the Valnard Sea is not an inland sea. It's just the sea far to the south of Rabanastre. So the Valnard Sea is shown on the map, it's just not labelled. Curiously, this map doesn't label a lot of the finer geographical points of Dalmasca which we've discovered from the new lore book and the Ivalice raids. This may be for a clean map image or to reduce clutter. Though I am curious why Valnain is labelled but not Lea Monde, which is the current capital of Dalmasca Inferior. I wonder if this means we might visit Valnain in 5.0.

Lea Monde is somewhere to the southeast of Rabanastre, in "Dalmasca Inferior," which is made up of Greylic's Bend and the Golmore Jungle regions. "Dalmasca Superior" is made up of the Dalmascan Desert (Westersands and Estersands).

well lea monde is coastal, so best places for it is west of valnain probably on the tip of greylic, or lea monde got lesaliad (moved to fit ff14 geography) with valnain being the 'country' and lea monde being the 'city' similar to dalmasca is in that map

Lea Monde is likely to endure an ill fate if it's to mimic its Vagrant Story counterpart. It's odd that it isn't located on the map itself though there's the possibility that the map is a fairly old one. Of course, it could be a very recent map and Lea Monde has already been plunged into chaos without us, specifically, being told. Either way, I wouldn't be surprised if it plays a part in 5.0 as a zone, dungeon or raid.

While I can't find anything that narrows down Lea Monde's location beyond Greylic's Bend/Golmore Jungle region, we can at least scratch that Valnain isn't the country. It is described as a port city.

From the quote you posted, if the "Superior" and "Inferior" labels were only imposed by the invading Garleans, then it makes sense that the Dalmascans themselves - and especially the Resistance! - are unwilling to use those labels. Either the map predates the invasion, or the mapmaker simply won't acknowledge the division.

On the choice of the label "Dalmasca" rather than "Rabanastre", it could be to do with what we 'normally call' the region politically. For the Eorzean cities we often talk about Gridania or Ul'dah as if the name represents the entirety of the Shroud or Thanalan. Dalmasca doesn't have the same oddity, and is correctly used to describe the country, while (from what little it's been discussed) Rabanastre only seems to refer specifically to the capital.

It's possible that the mapmaker (in-world or out) was thinking along these lines, equating the label "Dalmasca" with the city-name labels elsewhere on the map, and didn't realise the mistake until later. At which point, in-world at least, the map is 'done' and the error can't be fixed without making a mess of it.

It's possible we'll get a second-edition map with the name fixed, though!

On a related note, is Doma supposed to be the capital of Yanxia?

i couldnt find the quote in the lb2 about nagxia and yangxia, what page is that?

also lea monde valens and the vineyards is interestingly referred to in the past tense under diet

The Eorzean city-states are... well... city-states. So the name of the city is the name of the state, even if the region or island the state is located on goes by other geographical names. Most of the cities we've encountered in Hydaelyn follow a similar pattern until we get to the Far East where we have the Kingdom of Dalmasca and Hingashi who break from this pattern and are kind of confusingly labelled on the map.

Hingashi is the name of the nation, but the capital city is Bukyo. "Hingashi" is not labelled on the map, just the islands that make up Hingashi (Koshu and Shishu) and the two known cities (Bukyo and Kugane). OP is correct in that, if we were to follow this pattern, the city should be labelled Rabanastre and someone just goofed. Like I said in my first post there'll likely be an in-world explanation for why, when we zoomed specifically in on pretty much the entirety of the Kingdom of Dalmasca on the map Fran pulled out, Rabanastre, Dalmasca's capital, is erroneously labelled as the country name and not the city's name.

Yep, the Kingdom of Doma rules the region of Yanxia. Yanxia here is just the geographical region name.

Vagrant Story Spoilers:

Lea Monde was founded long before the game began, with ties to an increasingly influential cult that embraced a power known as the 'Dark'. In time, it became a fairly prosperous city and roughly twenty five years before the game starts, there's a power struggle that leads to a conjured earthquake that kills the inhabitants and cuts the city off from the mainland. This strengthens the Dark and brings forth undead monstrosities and demonic entities alike. Most of the game is spent fighting those monstrosities as well as those entering the city in the game's present day who wish to control the power that resides there for themselves. There's other details involved, but that's the condensed version.

The city itself was famous for its wine and the only way to enter the city in the game is through the abandoned wine cellars.

In addition to that, according to the 2nd Lore Book, another major city, Lea Monde is supposed to be present, and Valnain is supposed to be "at the edge of the sands" according to page 98.

I'm going to assume that the map was drawn before EEII was finished, or that its contents weren't relayed to the artists that drew the map. The descriptions in the Encyclopedia make it seem like Valnain and its inlet should be moved over to the Greylic's/Golmore border and Lea Monde should be where Valnain is now, where it looks like grapes could actually grow without the threat of viera defending the jungle. Maybe the Garleans glassed the vineyards, since them and Lea Monde's wine are described in the past tense?

I am wondering is the map older than Lea Monde's existence or just omitted for unknown reasons

The map only seems to show capital cities. So I don't think there's anything remarkable about a Dalmascan city other than Rabanastre being left off the map.... assuming that Valnain is supposed to be the Nagxian capital, at any rate.

Game and lore book make it clear that Valnain is a Dalmascan city though, not Nagxian.

Nagxia doesn't have a capital - it's made up of multiple small kingdoms. Dalmasca isn't a city-state like the Eorzean nations, and so has multiple major towns and cities. The entirety of the newly revealed territory is Dalmasca. It's so large that when it was conquered by the Empire, they divivded it into two Imperial provinces: Dalmasca Superior, containing the Dalmasca desert, and who's capital is Rabanastre; and Dalmasca Inferior, containing Greylic's Bend and the Golmore Jungle, and who's capital is Lea Monde.
So Valnain isn't even a provincial capital, let alone a national one, and if anything would likely be the major city of the Greylic's Bend region if the people who made the map hadn't screwed up.
