I'm in the same boat. I would love to have new rewards to spend our currency on.
and it's Jonathas! Now git off his lawn!
Wasn't the last update at the beginning of SB, too? And then only like what 2-3 items? He does need more items or more items tied to achievements so that at least if you still can't spend his tokens at least you still have to go and poke him for the reward.
If they ever end the recruitment campaign i imagine they might put those unique rewards into there
I'm not really interested in any of the things he's selling to begin with.
Or most of the achievement-reward glamours, which seem to all be bulky crowns and really ugly "royal robes".
At this stage, it's been updated so little and most of us have so many tokens that any item they add to there is practically given to us instantly. We just grab it at the vendor and forget about it. It's a rather poorly designed system.
What might have been a nice idea, if they wanted to make achievements relevant, is to add new items to the vendor for achievement milestones. For example, you'd unlock something at 1k points, 2k, 3k, 5k, 10k or whatever. The higher milestones would give a few rare items to chase for, a long term goal or two and encourage dipping into different content. Could be fun.
I imagine they planned to do stuff with it, but in the end the orders came down from $qEnix and items that could have gone in there instead flow into the mogstation now...
Piggybacking off this idea, would be nice if having seasonal achievements let you purchase the rewards from that seasonal event...
I would have liked them to put unique orchestrations/minions/mounts/emotes from past events there instead of Mogstation.
I suppose though that there's only a finite amount of points you could have
.... so I guess it wouldn't work in the long term.
Well, we do have an upcoming new expansion soon. It would be nice if they add lots of cool new goodies for it once Shadowbringers is out at least. And while we're on the subject, our current reward lineup consists of some items that each player can only really use one of each (like minions, mounts, etc.) and items like furnishing that we could potentially want multiple copies of. As there are a finite amount of achievements we can attain (even though there's tons of them), perhaps it would be useful to make a change so that the one-time rewards are purchased solely through achievement points, and create a secondary type of points for the other things. For example, you could have challenge points given out for completing the challenge logs, along with their typical rewards. By providing more rewards and integrating this system, you could encourage players not only to keep striving for more achievements but also motivate them to complete more challenge logs too (in theory, at least).
Hopefully 4.58 or 5.0 at least they will have updated it or addressed the situation.
I honestly completely forgot this guy existed lol I've not needed to go to him for ages.
Me too. But all the junk he contains my main character already obtained from the now obsolete veteran reward scheme.
Anything else he may contain was junk that was handed to me through achievement rewards. For the majority of people who have played since ARR launched, the points have not once been spent and are thus completely worthless.
I'd very much like to see things in there that would goad me into bothering about achievements in order to collect/save up the points to obtain cool items.
Orchestrion scrolls would be nifty.
Or unique furniture?: untradable one per character type - something to actually value having spent the time to gather the points for it.
I mean, I spent a few points on the magitek claw mount and that lion dog thing minion. Other than that though they're just sorta sitting there. Think I have about 143 points or so. I would certainly love some incentive to do other types of content I may not normally touch.
Aren't there some items that can be purchased over and over with the achievement tokens? If that's possible, it would limit how many items they could add before some players are locked out from new rewards.
Well the idea to me for the dood to have past event rewards, if there's the in game option to obtain past event items, you get two options. You can exchange the tokens (which while free, takes effort to obtain) and the mgstation (which is an instant, but effortless way)
I'm not someone that expects to be rewarded for nothing. So it's be a convienent way to get people to do content for the achievements needed for the tokens for whatever they wanted
I'm actually a bit sad how he was completely forgotten about by the devs. Give us some more FF glamours, from the guys and the girls.
Adding the tokens to Jonathas was to help new players get the increasingly out of reach veteran rewards before they died of old age, which was an increasingly loud complaint with each new tier of rewards. It was never about giving veteran players who already had all the rewards something to do.
Also, most new achievement-related rewards nowadays seem to be tied directly to the achievement itself and are acquired at the time/place of the achievement or from something/one related to the content like a vendor or a quest. Rather than the old method of do something here, then go talk to Jonathas there to get an additional reward in a completely unrelated and disconnected fashion. I suspect they've moved towards the former method of rewarding achievement items because, if this forum is any indication, ALOT of new players are frequently confused about how to get the rewards the achievement says they should get when Jonathas needs talked to.
The new method isn't any better. Before, talking to him at least gave it to you with a little dialog thanking you for sharing a specific tale. Now unless you know you've earned a specific achievement and that achievement rewards an item, there's nothing to indicate there's something to be claimed. You have sit there and click on every single category one by one to see if you've earned anything and whether or not you've claimed it yet.
I feel even more disconnected because it's become a mechanical process as opposed to "surprise! here's a gift for you".
The core problem is the game does a bad job of introducing the new player to Jonathas. There's no quest saying "hey, there's this guy hanging around in Old Gridania that loves to listen to stories of an adventurer's travels". Maybe the player notices him standing there if they pass through the area, which they have little reason to do unless a SMN or they stumbled over the quest for the Sightseeing Log. Maybe they even think to talk to him if they do notice him. Usually they don't.
I hate the new menu. There's no way to easily go through that list, and I have no idea if I have something new until I go down the entire list. I get achievements here and there, often when I'm in the middle of doing things already, and I don't usually have the time to just open my menu and see if I got a "present" from it. They should have kept the old way as well as added the new, if people really do like it.
Yeah, I think a combination of both systems would work better. The initial "here, you've earned this" conversation and then the menu to revisit and reaquire anything you threw out.
I feel like it got redesigned by someone trying to fix one problem, without realising the new system created a different issue instead.
I miss telling him a tale, rather than poking at his menu.
I mean the way they do new achievements, not the new way they do old achievements. In general, the achievements of SB have either directly given you the reward as part of accomplishing the achievement, or items associated with an achievement are gotten from a vendor or quest. There was only one item added in SB that you have to go talk to Jonathas to get (the crown for all classes 70), and it was more as a continuation of that previous chain of achievements. Every other achievement that has been added since 4.0 has had nothing to do with Jonathas for rewards. It seems SE is trying to steer away from Jonathas being the guy for that and focusing on making him just the guy for turning in achievement point tokens for token-based rewards.
As far as the claiming method of old achievement rewards, I wasn't aware they had even changed that, since I've long since gotten them all. Does he not still automatically give you the items your eligible for if you talk to him?
would be nice if long time players can use said points to buy fantasia but that's just me.
Please correct me if I am wrong, but have we received a new veterans items since HW? The last item I seemed to remember getting was the ffix Zidane outfit and then we were able to purchase everything from Jonathas. So perhaps we won't get anything in Shadowbringers either and this is just gonna be some archaic thing left to sit and rust?
I wonder that too OP. Honestly I wished that some of the requested mounts like the hellhound would have been released there instead of being another limited PVP item. Its sad that we have a knew system and yet nothing much is being done with it.
(At the same time I wonder when we will get our next "veteran" reward...it just feels like they dropped the old system with much more rewards for the bougth time with something that they are kinda ignoring much of the time..and with that I mean their new system where we had to be subbed at a specific time to get that ship mount.)
I'm okay with them dropping the veteran rewards and moving them to the achievement certificate system. I don't believe in special items and exclusives just for being subscribed longer. Those who have been will still end up gaining more in the long run as long as they have been playing the game while subscribed. At least with the certificate system, players can choose the reward most meaningful to them instead of having to settle for rewards they don't care about while they wait. If there is a desire by SE to have certain rewards feel more prestigious, attach a higher cost to them instead implementing a rigid time gate.
They do need to add in new rewards, though. Not just because there are plenty of us who had already earned all those rewards when they were still veteran rewards but because both old and new players would appreciate more choice. A lot of those items have little to no appeal unless you were already a fan of whatever FF game they had been copied from. It would be nice to see more rewards themed around FFXIV since that's the game we're playing to earn them.
There seems to be a lot of scope for vendors to sell things in the game via alt currency or gil but they just don't.
Last thing Jonathas got added was the Magitek Claw if I'm not mistaken. There could be mounts and glam added to him all the time yet it goes to mogshop.
Then there is the PVP materia seller who doesn't actually sell materia.
Then we have the Modern Aesthetics Gold Saucer seller who sells 1 (Curls)? maybe 2? new hair styles and nothing. They could have added one of the many styles PVP got to her. Rainmaker could have been added after this years Make it Rain event when we could buy from the vendor (but has now vanished again and not added to the game)
I have everything but only like 25 tokens, however I could easily see getting that many as I slowly level every class/job. Those tokens he sells for the swimsuits, are they good for anything else and do you get them anywhere else? Seems they could eliminate the currency and just put them in his inventory.
Since nobody seems to want Yo-Kai Watch to come back they could give those items to him.
