The Jobs: To Buy or Not To Buy?

Do you buy job level boosts or prefer to level them instead?
Feel free to share your reasons if yes then why and if no why not

My reasons:
For me, after leveling one job from 1 to 60, I decided I don't need to do it again unless I may feel like going through the leveling experience itself instead of having the job as to me it's an extra waste of time and I prefer playing in the latest content, I also dislike the grind of PotD (considering also that I have to go through HoH later) so I just prefer to pay the price as time is money and if I take the learning of the job into consideration, I still can spend some time to learn the job after buying it from 60 to 70 and then in 70 too

So what are your reasons?

I prefer to level them. If I can't tolerate playing a job long enough to hit cap, then I'm obviously not going to be playing it at cap enough to justify paying real money. Paying just for the achievements would devalue those achievements for me.

Levelling them is better. It gives you practice in lower level dungeons and leaves you with a better understanding of the job once you reach 60

I'm not wasting 30 dollars or whatever it is on a level up. Maybe if I ended up actually leveling an alt. :p

I level them. The main reason I leveled every job was to play through the job stories which the boost potion would skip.
I also couldn't have used one even if I wanted to since I already leveled everything to 60 in Heavensward before the potions were introduced.
I also enjoy leveling in and of itself.

I have yet to encounter any game in which I enjoyed playing a class but felt forced to buy a level skip because the leveling process was just that arduous.If I'm enjoying that class, then buying a level skip is a waste of money to me. Granted I have used level skips before in other games that were free due to promotions for expansions or packed in with another purchase. Sure enough every character I ever had that got to max level via a level skip winds up just sitting and not getting used for any normal daily play.

I level them up because I want to get a feel for how the job plays and it gives me insight into how to play with others who are on those jobs. I also want to see the stories tied to the jobs, despite whether people consider them to be good or bad. And no, I don't want to go to an inn room to watch it.

To me, the reason is very much due to the fact I felt a vast difference between a job at low level and high level to the point that it was unplayable to me from how boring it was
Take for example when I bought the MCH at 60 even, I did not enjoy it until I finally could launch the rockets and appreciated my patience through those few levels

It also made me wonder, what if people who try the game until 35 are not really tasting the fun and then incorrectly judging the game or the job when it's a lot more fun with the latest content skills?

That's actually the only part I love about leveling, experiencing the story while in the gameplay

I level them the normal way (no potd & HoH even).

Reason is twofold:

- job stories and how they can reveal interesting lore bits from the past (BRD, BLM, RDM, MNK) or have their own satisfying quests (PLD, WAR, DRK)

- I intend to play each job competently to flex between jobs for raiding or teach them to others (im a mentor who actually helps) - that means learning and adapting my rotation on raid level as early as possible; example, learning to optimize wildfire as early as 38, only 8 machinist level in. Thus I start every single job from the beginning and learn and adapt over time rather than forcing the learning process into the last ten levels.

I don't think it's the job at a low level that you don't have a lot of enjoyment in, it's the low level content in general. My RL buddy was the same way before leaving the game, and absolutely hated having to go back to level new jobs. Once she got one job to max level and got into endgame content, everything else was fodder.

For the 2.5 years I've been around, I've literally played the game the entire time always being 3-4 patches behind everyone else. Of course, I am not saying that everyone should play like me, but what I am saying is that you should also not incorrectly judge how a player has fun in this game. As you can see from the previous responses, there are players who do enjoy the leveling process. These players wouldn't take the skip potions even if they were free because they take away from the experiences they seek.

The same can perhaps be said for you: That spending time in the lower level stuff takes away from the enjoyment that you are paying your good money for. It makes economical sense for players such as yourself to buy the potions, and that is what they are there for. Don't feel like you have to justify anything to the community for taking them. However, I do have to wonder how long your interest in the game can be sustained when it isn't interested in 80% of the game's content.

I understand what you're saying, I just meant that for those who would only find the newer content enjoyable, they don't have an option to try the game like the ones who would find 1-35 enjoyable but the reasons are understandable why since it is in the end a sub game and not all should be able to try it in its core content regardless of who it may be but it would be nice though if a trial of certain jobs in the latest content is available for a try for certain individuals, like how about this?
You level the character until 35, if you still find the game boring or not worth your monthly subscription then with this account after your 35th level, have a one time try of a single job at 70 in let's say a room where you can hit a dummy or kill 5 mobs so you can get a feel of what your job actually is at 70, which is the real content since it's where you end up being in forever, just a thought

What is 80% of the content for you, dear?
If you mean only the leveling experience from 1-60, I did say that I leveled 1-60 and saw most of the quests which is the reason for why I no longer want to be in there anymore unless I want to experience some of it again, which I also can by creating another new character but to me is a bad idea in this game and the game is huge and that's definitely not 80% of it

The buying of potions is cause:
I can't do the MSQ again or I don't want to do it in the future, I can't do the side story quests again cause they are completed once, I don't want to spam dungeons I've already seen many times before and I don't want to spam the same dungeon PotD over and over again
I said story is the only part I enjoy in leveling and I did mention that in my first post, that the only reason I would go through it again is cause I want to experience it again but if I don't feel like it then I won't go through it ^^

I much prefer to level via standard dungeons.

Sure, you can argue the dummies are practice enough, But speaking as a BLM (that which I am presently fixated on), No amount of dummy practice teaches you how to maintain your rotation while avoiding mechanics designed specifically to disrupt it.

Its one thing to simply know which buttons to press in which order, But learning the whens and whys of all your skills in a live environment is best taught in dungeons.

In my opinion anyways, lol.

I started in ARR with a group of friends who played 1.0. Began as ACN and switched to Monk around level 30. While leveling that Monk (which wound up my main through all of ARR) I never once felt that it wasn't fun, even when I only had 4 buttons. Looking ahead and seeing the skills that were coming and trying to figure out how I would fit those into the rotation i'd already established was part of what got me hooked.

Coming from max skills down to 10% of your skills does indeed feel boring in comparison, But since a fresh player wont have that experience yet, they're less likely to feel bored at lower levels.

Dear!
BLM is the easiest job I've so far played, MCH and SAM come next but MNK is the ridiculous one

I bought a potion for my new main because I already knew the job. I might do it again if I want another healer.

Worst case scenario: You pay money for the potion and then you don't like the job at all.

And honestly, it doesn't take that long. You get hugh xp-boost if you've already leveled up one character and with the boni from the dailys you are at level 60 in no time.

Buy the boosts. I quit playing Path of Exile after 9 months because they didn't have this. After going from level 6 to 26 with only Impulse Drive on my 'goony, I vowed that never again do I want to have to go through that. And as far as "Yeah, but you don't get enough of a chance to learn to play your class then" goes, well, that's what training dummies are for. And hunts. And beast tribe quests. And duty roulettes (although I like to at least be competent with my class before I hit these, so I'm not burdening the other guys). And Heaven-on-High........

Secondly, I always try to craft all my own gear whenever I can. I don't rely on drops for my gearing up. So it's already going to take me at least twice as long to level. I sure as hell don't need it to be any longer than that.

It is really easy to get to 50, and even 60 with a single class. I don't know a whole lot about the trial version of the game, but if it were up to me I would allow the trial player to obtain level 50. I would even go further and allow them to complete all of 2.0. We are two expansions in now, and levels 1-35 I wouldn't even call the growth phase of the class; more like the 'budding' phase. They should be able to experience an 8-man trial at the very least.

Crafting, gathering, big fishing, hunts, EX trials mount farming, PotD/HoH/Treasure dungeons, chocobo breeding/squadron raising, sightseeing log, triple triad (card collecting), gardening, PvP, ARR/HW relic weapons, housing, quest chains like Post Moogle or Hildibrand... I'm sure I missed some lol, but you can include leveling in there too. But I do the majority of these things, and find them all very enjoyable otherwise I wouldn't do them.

Again, you don't need to justify buying the potions. I can't sit here and tell how to have fun in this game while getting your money's worth. That is for you to determine. However, those who are not interested in the activities I listed above don't have a whole lot to keep them busy once they've reached max level because endgame represents very little of the game's overall content, but it also represents the majority of the relevant content, so I understand where you are coming from.

The only way I would ever tell someone to go ahead and buy a job/storypotion, is if its an alt and the player just wants to reach a certain point in the story to continue on.

It's not worth it, it doesnt take that long to level a job to 70 even without all the bonuses available.

Even if you dislike a job, it takes little to no effort to cap it out. I think I capped my NIN in about two weeks of doing only alliance/main story roulette and beast tribes.

I want to experience the stories so I'll take the scenic route.

I would have been interested in buying the level up if, one: I didn’t already have them al leveled, and two: It didn’t skip the job quests.

The job quests might not be all that long or intricate (for the most part) but I enjoy them and would not want to miss out.

I leveled all the jobs the old fashioned way. There's no way I would pay for a potion unless it's for an alt on a different data center, and even then I would be more likely to buy a MSQ skip than a level boost. The post-ARR MSQ fetch quest slog is way more tedious than leveling a job from 1 to 70.

My reasoning being that I actually enjoy the leveling process. I like to learn the jobs from the ground up and experience their unique story quests (though some are better than others, naturally.) I already pay nearly R$60 a month to be able to play the game, it would be asinine in the extreme to pay another R$100 to not play the game. I have difficulty even wrapping my head around the logic of it.

you can easily level jobs past the first by using daily roulettes on them
the daily commitment is pretty tiny and it will let you experience them as well, might not like how they all play.

also, I may be wrong but i believe the level up potions mess up the crown achievements

I haven't bought any job level boosts since most of the content/time sink for me in a MMO is xping. I really hate doing the job quests if not for those xping be way easier. I try to think of them as level cap quests instead.

I have eight characters and MSQ is annoying since almost everything is gated behind it. It's why I end up buying story skip for three of them. I'm poor so the rest I have to slog through MSQ and skipping CS as I already seen them all doing it on one of the chars. At least ARR rewards you with a fantasia potion but HW gives nothing. It be nice if SE gave the option for full story skip if you have it completed on one char on the same account.

I would rather level them up so I learn the classes. Besides, leveling is ***WAY*** too easy to do anyways.

I'm that weird one that actually likes the leveling up process in MMOs, possibly more then the end game, so I level all of my jobs across all of my alts myself. Not about to dump money on boosts.

I prefer to level them. Leveling other jobs after your main takes very little time with all the leveling options available to players (and the EXP buffs available), so why spend money on a job potion when I can just save it and level manually? Plus, it allows me to familiarize myself with the way a job plays as I level it.

I level them for the story and learning the class. When I unlocked sam and the quest was all here you go try and figure out how to play with no real hint during a duty I felt like I was stumbling around and with the 5.0 job(s) coming I hope at least they're more like rdm in that the npc gives you a hint as to what you're supposed to do. Specially if they start at 60 you don't have a lot of time to go read tool tips. I know some people actually learn better that way. Yes there are some jobs that when played below a certain level can be frustrating like mch. I think that's just another thing SE didn't think about when creating them and have improved on. I also know most of the tricks so I don't have to fall to running PotD or HoH to the point of burn out. Like doing guildhest as they give you a bonus for doning them once and a bonus for doing it on that job. useing leves in Arr areas, leaving side quests for other jobs, using my squad, doing roullettes, and beast tribes. Along with eating food and anything else that I can equip or use that'll give me an xp bonus.

I doubt I'd ever buy a boost. the point of a game is to play it.

Levelling them helps to learn them, and its so quick these days anyway, although i wouldnt want to level from lvl 1 again, so id be unlikely to take up a ARR job unless i had road to 60.
Which is precisely what i did for an alt chatacter, to level jobs i wouldnt have levelled otherwise and to replay the story.

It would be very situational for me. I prefer leveling a job so I can learn to play it effectively along the way and be comfortable with it by the time I get into endgame, and IMO the boosts would only be useful if you’re in a hurry to get something leveled. I’d probably only boost an alt on a job I’ve already leveled and geared on my main and don’t care to go through that process again, if I wanted to play with friends on a different server.

I bought the boost when it was on sale and boosted AST.

No regrets and if I had to, I would do it again.

My "method" of leveling classes goes something like this:

(1) Get really excited about leveling a new job
(2) Get to about level 40 and then get extremely sick of spamming PoTD vowing to never touch the job or PoTD again
(3) After about 3 months I forget why I stopped leveling the job again and level it to about 60 at which point some shiny new content comes around and I forget about leveling
(4) A month or two after the shiny new stuff wears off I wonder why I stopped leveling the job again and finish it up to level 70. Go back to step 1.

Maybe I'm just out of touch with newer gamers, but I find leveling XIV to be super fast and easy to do. Many of the MMO's i grew up on had much more difficult lvl grinds and much harsher penalties for death. I remember my first max lvl character in DAoC taking me about 6 months to get. In ARR I got to max lvl in 23 days, and that was playing casually.
