How BLU CAN be implemented in Content

Let's say SE hears the crowd and allows Blue Mages to join in current content, alongside roulettes etc., here's a simple solution:

-Pre-Determined "Base" Blue Magic sets for that content, that's balanced by the DEV team, and in-line with current DPS output but also has its own unique twang to its base-line Class of Magical Ranged DPS.

-Translation:

• 24 Base Blue Spells are granted to the Player for those "Activities" (Raid / Duty Finder / etc.) to the Blue Mages for that content.

-Have a Blue Magic Spell "Requirement (s)" in order to access these activities, sort of like an iLvl Requirement is needed to enter certain content.

Outside of activities, during "Solo" play, or any other content that BLU access with pre-built parties or the general premise of the Blue Mage: they can swap spells etc. pretty much what it is now.

Further Translation:

So from what I saw on the video, BLU doesn't have a rotation (I may be wrong) my perspective with BLU, though I am on board by the way it's being implemented, is the DEV team sort of testing the waters.

So with no rotation you just spam Blue Spells until enemy is dead. But again I may be wrong, there could in fact be a rotation.

So here's my take on the future of BLU for Content related to Roulettes / Party Environments:

Add a Blue Mage Specific Rotation:

Ability: "Scan" Determine Weakness

• Goblin Punch (Opener) >> [x2 Single Blue Spell] >> [Job Meter +]
  
• Bomb Toss (AoE) >> [x2 AoE Blue Spells] >> [Job Meter +]

List of Job Meter Finishers:

AoE's

• 1,000 Tonze Swing *Come on we all know how much we hate this move... lets use it against them!
• Gigaflare
• Of course the some of the ones from the Primal Fights

Enemy Debuffs for Raid Utility:

Zero-form Particle Beam: Inflicts Vulnerability up and stacks up to 5 times, equaling: 8%

-I'll come up with more later

*[GCD Blue Spells] Hard Hitting spells like: Jet Stream / Goblin Rush [Meter -]

*[GCD Raid Utility Spells] - Bad Breath / White Wind (AoE Heal) / Angel Whisper (AoE Raise all) << OH YEAH! j/k lol. But at least raise one target :cool:

• These Hard Hitting Spells Eat up some of the "Unbridled Knowledge Meter

[Unbridled Knowledge Meter 80%] >> Primal / Notorious Monster Ability [Meter Exhausted]

• Or the [Unbridled Knowledge Meter] Opens up a new rotation that's finisher is a "Primal / NM Ability"

Again, just a thought, and of course once we get to test it ourselves we'll see their vision.

So let's say, The current Blue Mage again is just a test phase sort of thing, where it's "Limited" but truthfully, SE could be thinking: "I'm not sure it could work with party play due to certain moves / abilities, it MAY work, but let's see the community run with it with pre-formed parties and go from there."

That could very well be the development team's current thought. So let's sort of speculate how the job can evolve from here.

-The Cane could have an additional bonus of learning Blue Magic the higher they go in iLvl-

When the job launches let's say the Blue Mage has the following abilities:

I would have to agree with devs in keeping BLU out of high endgame content, because yikes that would require soooo much balancing. But I dont see why they can't let blue mage queue up as at least a dps for other content.

Everyone loves to make it sound so simple "just come up with a predetermined set of skills lol." like I am sure the devs haven't thought about that at all. Also you are proposing this under the assumption that every blue mage queuing into content would have learned all of those predetermined skills beforehand and this is simply never the case if you've been playing this game for half a day.

I dunno... I mean you can technically queue up as a class without your soul stone, or queue up without doing your jobs quests... but you rarely see it happen, most people just have the common sense of knowing "oh i guess shouldnt do that, huh?" So why not a blue mage? But I'm talking about dungeons and such, cake walks, its pretty damn hard to fail that stuff... I would have to agree to lock blue mage out of high end stuff like savage or ex, mostly because it would be hard work on devs to balance things out. >.<

True Strike on your behalf, I see where you're coming from, it would be dumb to hand a new ability to someone who hasn't even learned it; but there could always be a "Access to Duty Finder will unlock after unlocking..." such and such skill

I was just throwing in some fun ideas. Yeah, saying something is easier said then done; but having three months + of data with BLU being capped at 50, they could easily gather up enough data eventually to see what could and couldn't work in a Duty Finder instance.

Regardless of anything, it's going to be fun watching tons of BLUs flood the early zones and be in the crowd to try to learn new spells /abilities! Bring on "Frightful Roar"

Let's also bring on Ability / Spell perks ahahaha… one can wish.

Except it isn't, all they had to do was tie the Skill farming into Job Quests, and balance the skills like any other Job. That would've been satisfying for the majority of us who wanted BLU in game, instead a lot of us are going to be passing on or begrudgingly playing this version instead. Blue Magic in other games is more than viable for normal use, and the example of "oh no lvl 5 death didn't kill it, BLU ruined" is false, cuz most bosses are immune to status effects in most FF games with BLU anyway. It's simply the lack of desire to deviate from the FF XI BLU, and as such they basically just ported it over and said it's "solo focused" but also decided that you'd need pre-mades to do any group content (some of which holds some of your skills), meaning that you can't play solo anyway, and with how things are looking it'll never be at the same level as standard jobs, always lagging behind to avoid being added into current raid content.

So BLU being able to play any role and you think nobody gonna complain about BLU being the only job that can do everything? You also have the problem of people not having learned several of the spells in the set. The only way they could balance BLU is to make it a typical DPS job with set skills and you learn spells from Job quests.

That's a false parallel. For one you don't acquire other jobs skills through rng. There are more incentives to progress through other job's job quests because you unlock skills guaranteed, gears that you might've wanted for glamour as well as lore if you care about it. Despite all this though most people in df still only use one or two buttons out of their entire kit only with blue mage, people would have a legit excuse for why they won't have certain skills.

It was a fun thought that came to me. Seeing, I'm assuming this since we haven't seen all the spells / abilities it can learn as of yet, it'll have a wide array of healing / defensive / offensive abilities / spells at their disposal; maybe allowing the Blue Mage to choose a specific stance (class) to go in. Especially in a "Trust" Party. They can become whatever role is needed, corresponding to the specific spells it chooses.

Imagine the Ability:
Diffusion >> Mighty Guard
>> AoE HP regeneration + Defensive Shield

or

White Wind >> AoE Cure

or

Cocoon >> Grants a defensive bonus of 20% for 14s

etc.

However it may be, I'm glad BLU is introduced, it's going to be a fun collect them all sort of job. Gotta Learn`em all Pok... err Blue Mage!

but again, I may be getting ahead of myself, I am just eager to discover BLU once its released!

Other MMOs balance there games all the time with customization. It doesn't need to be in 100% balance in the ultimate sense, but just in a reasonable margin.

Balancing would be extremely difficult. Ffxi is a prime example

Playing BLU in ffxi now is completely different than what it use to be; you’d have to explore its i119 BLU era to see.

However the BLUs weakness (before the era of i119) was always MP. If they spammed too many spells their DPS would be reduced due to that fact alone: no mp = no DPS.

So pretty much an overzealous BLU spamming spells would result in more down time less DPS. In ffxiv they could limit it by MP / GDCs etc.

There’s always a way to balance, but again whatever SE chooses to do in the future I’m just glad and grateful we get to play BLU.

FFXI, at least in its hayday, wasn't an example of balance being difficult. It was an example of developers not caring to balance anything.

How many years were dragoons underpowered? And not just by a small amount, but they had huge glaring problems that were easily fixed. Like the fact dragoon's 2 hour was to call they're Wyvern. That was always an underpowered and terribly idea, but it took them years to change it to something useful. The developers ignored the problem, but that one fix was an easy change that every dragoon in the world had been suggesting for ages.

Perfect balance is impossible, even with the bland stats and lack of customization we have now is unbalanced. DRKs have been underpowered for an entire expansion. Since perfect balance is impossible, I say we should have some fun and interesting choices to go along with that lack of perfect balance.

Honestly I like the direction they're going with Blu. People have asked for some solo content in this game. It gives people something to do during server down time when it isn't very populated late at night. I like the fact that we might need help from friends to go into certain dungeons/instances to possibly learn some new skills. It's gonna give some life to the older areas, trying to figure out what all of the 49 spells Blu can learn are. I don't want Blu to be another 'cookie cutter' class. 'Balance properly-ish to make raid worthy' blah blah blah.

Not everyone needs to raid to enjoy a game. Not every class HAS to stick to the same copy/paste stuff to be another version of existing stuff. I WANT Blu to be different. What I've seen of the class so far looks UH-MAY-ZING.

You're absolutely right. Blue mage sounds amazing, which is part of the reason why such a large group of us are upset. We want all of what its offering. We just also want that as a full job and not a limited one.

Fun fact. Every role can already do everything. You just need to customize for it, and it may not be ideal. It's especially easy to do this in non-savage content. Tanks can just DPS. DPS can be the tank. Healers can just DPS. Though some combinations are more or less advantageous than others. The mindset that tanks only tank, healers only heal, and DPS only DPS is short-sighted as hell. But when 99% of the playerbase only ever interacts with the most recent raids in standard party formats, they never put themselves in situations where roles break their standards.

Anyways, BLU being hybrid is fine. Maybe it won't be perfectly shoehorned into one role. That's fine. It can do everything - but not as well as everyone else. The differences get offset by how the rest of the party responds. BLU tank does more DPS than WAR, but needs special attention to survive? No problem. It just hurts the healers' ability to DPS, as they are having to throw out more than just regens to support the tank through boss autos. That DPS is made up by the BLU damage. Same deal if the BLU queues as healer. Maybe you just need to put more pressure on the other healer (you can already solo heal all Savage content, and some or all ultimate). And if the BLU is DPS? Well, maybe they being less DPS, but the DPS loss is offset by their ability to bring party utility.

When people see things only in terms of strict DPS numbers and shoehorn party roles, then yes, BLU is going to look like it can't raid. But if you actually look beyond that, it is perfectly fine as an imperfect raiding class.

Also, people may boot BLUs unnecessarily. But that's a people problem, not a design flaw. Same reason people think restricting content to i390+ will somehow get you better players. Maybe it will on average, but you're also keeping out some amazing players who just don't care about speedfarming gear.

I absolutely agree with this: and to add: we could be also over exaggerating our speculations / expectations a bit since we haven't exactly seen what SE is going to do with the job. If it's just a "test" phase and they'll eventually implement and unlock all content if certain criterias are met to let it Raid / Roulettes etc..

The idea of Blue being a hybrid is straight out of FFXI. This game is not FFXI. I don't believe FFXI's design can work, and the dev's attempts to implement FFXI design is the primary reason this iteration of BLU is (presumably) incompatible with all of the content FFXIV.

There's like 8 other iterations of Blue Mage to work with where they primarily just deal damage with unique skills and have a ton of utility. Almost every Blue Mage in FF history uses a melee weapon. Just make them a melee ranged DPS caster. Give them some defensive utility with Mighty Guard, White Wind, etc. Let them one-shot non-boss/raid mobs with L5 Death. Let them stack Thousand Needles and unleash them with one button press. And maybe explore outside the priority-based 30 hotkey DPS system they can't seem to break out of for gameplay. Keep the leveling style, it's unique. Keep the ability learning method, it's true to form. Keep the Masked Carnival if you want, but I'd trade it for the ability to play more than a trial version of FFXIV as Blue Mage.

My god! XI had... characters! We can't do that; this is XIV!

Making BLU a hybrid has little if anything to do with XI and far more to do with balance in a "pick 24 of 49" (at level 50) toolkit. Rather than having 49 damage-dealing abilities, almost guaranteeing that some will go without even situational use, you allow for all three roles within monster skills. At that point, you could even have as many as 80 skills and still have less bloat in filling the DPS role specifically if that's what it comes down to, because at least there'd be situational uses for the others, be it as a dungeon tank, a dungeon healer, a tank+healer, or whatever other combination makes runs go efficiently and/or enjoyably.

Honestly having a BLU that could queue as a tank or dps or healer would be a good thing for the game.

"Damn we have been in queue for ages"
"Hold on i'll spec my BLU tank and we can just get another DPS."

It would certainly cut down on queue times.

SE is worried that people won't know how to spec. Which is really a slap in the face to think their player base is so stupid they can't figure stuff out. This level of hand holding is just atrocious. Its no different than a Ninja not knowing their Mudras before they queue and rabbiting all the time. That person learns really quickly how useless they were/are and learns or chooses a different job that isn't so difficult for them.

BLU has already been billed as a caster DPS with caster gear and caster role actions. No matter your skills, you won't be a tank BLU or healer BLU or melee BLU.

I think most understand that. Mine was just an off the wall comment. More of a what could of been with the scope that BLU could have brought.

But it possibly could. Just because it uses Caster DPS gear doesn't necessarily mean those stats cant be valued for different things. Spec Tank and all of a sudden that INT turns into Armor Bonus etc.

So maybe during "Limited" Play, right?

What if BLUs sort of create a party for a DNG and they talk amongst themselves and sort of "Role" themselves:

Player 1: "Hey guys I'll tank," NP

Player 2: "Okay cool, I'll focus on Heals"

etc. Other players DPS lol

But of course, they wouldn't be "Branded" that specific role on the DNG, they'd just have a set spells that will help with either:

• Healing
  
• Tanking

The BLUs can just sync up and zerg enemies but has designated players helping with those following tasks. Especially during a boss or something along those lines.

It would bring such a fun dynamic! But regardless of whatever way you slice it; all my talk is general hype for the job itself (and that SE is FINALLY adding BLU) and what it could do in the future!

But I have a strong feeling from the get go, it'll work that way, especially since we can run DNGs, but not through duty finder, so a pre-formed party of BLUs can go to town on those DNGs. [Correct me if I'm wrong though]

JUst do an unsynced party and everyone can do that, or even do it solo.

Not sure why they went with DPS, it was always a support and utility type of class, anyway...

It's simple really, should've been a normal tank class with a learn skill:

-10 categories of monsters each category has one learn-able spell.
-A learn/study skill gets replaced by whichever category monster you studied.
-The spell persists as either usage or timer, the stronger the spell the fewer or shorter, then the skill turns back into Learn/Study.

Because a level 70 Archer is still a functioning class. It has a rotation that is missing end skills and its damage would subpar as a result, but *functional*.

A Blue Mage at 70 who just leeched off FATEs or some other method of levelling that never exposed them to learning a new skill would have exactly zero skills. Or whatever basic attack BLUs will start off with.

Basically, take a Monk and just spam Bootshine on a level 70 mob.
That is the concern the Devs have, and I believe it to be a valid one. If you took 4 base classes into a 4 man dungeon that were geared appropriately, the run CAN succeed. It would be hard and a bit of a slog, but doable since those classes have the basic core skills of their Role. But try the same with those same classes using only the very first skill usable at level 1 and its mechanically impossible.
That's the comparison. A base class at 70 retains the core of the Jobs role rotations. A Blue Mage has no built in core and relies on learning and setting skills on its own.

Also, The way they described this Limited Job system makes it sounds far more like a beta test than an actual 'mechanic'.
Which makes a great degree of sense to me. Having the ability to create a custom skillset is indeed a nightmare to balance. That's a lot of different skill combinations to thoroughly test inhouse. I feel more like they've opted to essentially outsource the testing of Blue Mages to us.
They can easily collect live data of skill usages and adjust them in a way that allows for any and all combinations to achieve a similar result.
If one particular set of skills ended up as the one that had the highest DPS by a noticeable margin, that would be the only accepted skillset for Blue Mages. Prospective new Blue Mages would then simply look up a guide, get only the required skills for this 'cookie-cutter' skillset and ignore all the rest.

They know that Players can be extremely creative in ways they never considered. So why not let us, the Players, provide the data in a way that doesn't just explode the raiding scene?

Nothing is stopping them from deciding to move Blue Mages out of the Limited category and into the wider world of content once they feel they've achieved balance.
Further additions to such a Limited category could well be a true Summoner, though with a different name to differentiate it from the DoT version.

It allows the Developers to get truly creative with Jobs without needing to fear for endgame balance. Once they have the live data to make it competitive in endgame content, they can lift the Limited tag and let us go nuts. That can only be good for the game.

This is a very good point, and I agree with the Devs in it being a valid one.

1 - 70 ARC would have no songs, no dots, and more. I would 100% kick without a shred of guilt if they were unable or unwilling to equip their job stone.
2 - 70 BLU with no abilities, same thing - I would absolutely kick if they are not able to do their job in the content, as above.
3 - 70 MNK with bootshine only. This would be harder; for me, I don't think I would know they were only doing that one skill over and over, or if I did, I wouldn't realize it for a pretty far pace along. If I did and someone refused to fully participate - I don't care if they are good or bad, but if they straight up don't even try - then I would kick, yes.

I don't like freeloaders - as long as you participate and try, I couldn't care less if you were great or terrible. That goes for any job at any level - and Blue Mage is no exception.

If the developers really, REALLY wanted to make sure that didn't happen - they could easily put in restrictions for the queues. Minimum ilvl for all dungeons (be very liberal and inclusive, but don't let people show up in level 10 gear to a level 47 dungeon); Minimum quest fulfillments (maybe halfway through the level 70 dungeon list, require level 70 job quest complete); require job stones to be equipped for dungeons higher than level 30, unless in a preformed party (if you choose to make the game a challenge - then you should absolutely have that option - but not at the expense of others who are uninterested in your self-imposed restrictions); minimum/required abilities learned/equipped for Blue Mage (either they have the core stuff to do their job, or they need to go get it and not be a drain to the group).

I have an idea for how this could work...

What if BLU's spells were handled similar to a system they've already implemented in game -- Triple Triad?

You select from your "deck" of spells, but certain high-powered ones cannot be used in high-end duty content, just like certain elite cards can't be used against NPCs.
