I'm not trying it but is anyone here excited? I was delighted by how Yoshida announced it. First he said... "Blue Mage... Will not be in 5.0. IT WILL BE ON 4.5!!!"

Level cap will be 50 for it though.
It will be a hell to balance this, but seems fun as kupo.
I'm more interested what they mean by "limited job" it worries me a little.
Love this! Some people may bristle at the cap, but it's a smart idea. Rather than launch at the expac at level 50, people can level up from 1-50 and then be ready to level more at 5.0. Gives the devs more time to balance the job with real-time feedback, too -- and without breaking higher-level content.
Can I take the instant wipe moves from Primals please? xD
The way it seems to read to me is that by being a "Limited Job" it may be limited to what it can participate in. We've at very least seen Shiva in the video (and learned from her, at that!) so likely up through the 50 cap battles? It might be a balance issue for later content, and that may be why it's separate but... eh?
Praetorium and Castrum as BLU, please look forward to it.
I don't get the point of having a job you can't really play outside of its own duty or in anything relevant.
That's true - I didn't consider an aspect of beta-testing for it. I bristled a little at the 50-cap, because I'd love to use it in current content, but given it looks like standard leveling and having to learn your own actions (you don't get any from leveling, it sounds like!) at least it'll be a busy leveling rush to 50. XD
As this person said, its likely the lvl cap is set to 50 and will increase when the game comes out OR increase as it gets closer to xpac. This way you can lvl it to 50 now, then 60 closer to the xpac, then 70 before the xpac so you can start the xpac as one. A big issue I think people probably had with SB was Sam and RDM started at 50 at the beginning of SB, and put people behind story wise as they needed to catch up to 60 before actually moving forward. They probably dont wnat a repeat of that.
This also prevents the new class from messing with current content till an appropriate time. As in, they dont want you to be doing end game content with the new class till that endgame content is all but irrelevant

The video.
I sitll dont know how the heck will work in this game.
My only concern is people trying to take a base Blue Mage into higher content without having learned any of the skills needed to make it a rounded job. I would hope that they do their best to put a soft limit after level 50 that will force you to at least pick up a few skills before advancing to dungeons and trials beyond that. Otherwise I'm actually surprised and proud they had the balls to pull Blue Mage off like this. Good on them for trying something different.
I also wonder if limited may mean "no job story and quests," since you'll be learning your stuff through combat.
Can someone explain to me why the female blue mage outfit appears to have *white* thigh high boots?
When they say it's "not tied to any class" - what does that mean? Do they just mean it starts as its own job like SAM/RDM did?
This is pure speculation on my part... but as BLU is not tied to any class, could it be a hybrid class? ie. you learn healing actions you heal, you learn defensive actions you can tank, you learn thousand needles you gouge everyone eyes out with a billion lil pricklies (dps)...?
I suspect the term "limited" is essentially going off the fact that we're going to be demoing the job in 4.5 up to lv50, and that it will become a "full" job once 5.0 is released and the level cap is then maxed. I could also see them raising BLU's cap to 60 in 4.55 and then ultimately to 70 in 4.58 to ease it into the new expansion. It'll be interesting to see how the "learned" abilities work in this game though. I'm actually excited to try this job, though I expect I'll probably be sticking to my current mains mostly.
looks locked to side content.... *readys for salt*
My issue with this classless base for BLU is that limited could mean that it's used in "limited content" which means it can't go into raids for 24 man raids, EX primals etc, which would really turn a lot of people off I hope that's not the case. My hopes is that we can use monster abilities to build how we wanna play (DPS/tank/healer) that way the choices are limited not the class.
"Taking inspiration from previous FINAL FANTASY titles, the blue mage job will provide a unique solo gameplay experience in which players will learn monster actions and advance through blue mage-specific content."
"Blue mage will be available to all players that own A Realm Reborn, have reached level 50 as a Disciple of War or Magic, and have completed the 2.0 main scenario."
Source.
Man, I thought you were messing with me. I guess not.
This is what I expected, expect beastmaster to be introduced like this if that job makes the cut eventually.
On that note I don't like the look of blue mage. Look's like a 1970-80's hero that Bruce Lee played called Kato. I would rather have the middle eastern vibe with scimitars as in FFXI.

I assume it means you can't join normal duties. If all the actions need to be learned, then they would need to gate Blue Mages from entering any duties without abilities.
Maybe the blue mage specific instances will require you to have learned most/all of the abilities, and once you complete them it will be usable as a full fledged job.
A damn waste of potential again...If it's going to start from a lower level and be capped at lvl50, it should start at lvl1 and at that point it should be available to new players. Having a requirement of lvl50 class and finishing the A Realm Reborn main story quest makes it useless to new players again.
Unless it will NEVER be available for party instances...at which point it's a missed opportunity for another reason altogether. I'd prefer a less problematic mechanically Blue Mage that can be used in normal content than a special job that does not allow for any kind of progress for the character it's used on...Well, it's still better than some of the other ideas and may be fun to play at least. It also shows they may actually experiment with stuff like that. So that's positive.
Yeah, I have a sinking feeling BLU is going to essentially be "side content" and won't be able to be used in any group situations. I can't imagine they'd call it a limited job if it wasn't it's own thing. If it was just going to be a normal job that's capped at 50 for now, they probably would have said that - but calling it a limited job makes me think it's a completely new system.
They wanted BLU to look more like FFV Blue Mage.

*Scratches at the wall of FFXIV like an excited cat*
Is this already available? Wait, when is 4.5 anyway? :o I have a great NEED for this!
Also, can't wait to play as a Warrior of Darkness in 5.0. My Dark Knight and Black Mage will be pleased~ Muwahahahaha!!! XD
