I am curious if SE is considering reviewing their networking code for 5.0 I know there were talks about wanting a big datacenter in an interview by Yoshi-P. But I was curious if there was be a more vested movement in improving the infrastructure code of FFXIV. I know most of the code was from 1.0 and a lot of it had been rewritten/fixed in 2.0 But it has always felt like this has been a incremental process.
Right now when I look at how the game is responding, and more importantly how much information I need to copy paste to a GM it just feels like the gaming net code is a little bit dated and in some regards easily manipulated. It would be nice to know if Square has any plans to enhance the game engine in the next expansion. I know some people would like beter textures for their PS4 Pro and I personally would like real 4K Support. but I would be most happy if Square spends time into reviewing their backbone cause I keep thinking that a lot of issues they are running into right now all resolves back to bad choices made in 1.0.

Totally off-topic, my Grandfather raised saddleback pigs, I can remember when one tried to make a break for it (didn't fancy being bacon I guess :p), and came thundering past me with my Grandfather chasing XD That beast was massive when I was five years old. -

I wouldn't entirely rule it out honestly. They already had to do 2 revamps. Its just a question where their priorities lay. I do recall when housing was such a enjoyable disaster a year ago that they had to improve server infrastructure to add more housing.

I think it has to be incremental and based around singular things over time. The netcode impacts a lot of things under the hood.

It really depends on how the game is coded. If you look at the way its described the netcode was made in a very arbitrary way. (there is a good youtube video about it with examples). Where the server had to register you clicking on menu items, and also if you were changing videocard settings... It was ridiculous and incredibly laggy which taxed the servers. I never really got to the bottom of if they completely killed this or just fixed the problem by segmenting the servers into instances. in FFXIV 1.0 you had very large zones that all were loaded onto one server.

It will impact a lot of system yes but nothing wrong with incrementally improving the game and specially this subcomponent that seems to be causing grief in a lot of different facets. Housing popping, suszaku being a right down fun fight with server tick lag. The game can do so much more if they manage to improve on this subsection. -

I agree. I prefer more QA, better network ,than better graphics. Graphic are ok, we don't need increase even more the minimum requirements (they already did on 4.0). But nowadays people only care about graphics and nothing more.

WoW did an overhaul of it's infrastructure for Cataclysm. I can't picture SE doing the same because all the money this game makes goes towards other projects instead.

I just wish they could somehow overhaul the whole server tick issue. I get tired of being hit by an AOE that I am visibly out of, just because I didn't catch the server tick in time for it to register me being outside of the AOE.

FFXI Net code was based on dial up. They important that net code and said oo we need more then 56k can give so you need high speed to play FFXIV. The net code is so old. I look at Games like WOW and ESO and the net code is so much better. SE already reworked and has opitmized the net code a few times.
But a ground up rework would be great but then other things would need to be reworked too and I'm not sure they are willing to put in all that much time. -

The original intention of FFXIV 1.0 was to have very large zones with no loading times. Instead of going through a gate and waiting for an instance to load you would seamlessly walk through. Technically amazing. Very taxing on the server.

has a good example of what it was like. I doubt in the 18 months development time they had they could fix all the problems they had. I am under the assumption this problem is still around just well hidden away by the segmentation they did,. The question is how much they can drag out of the game if they manage to rework the networking backbone. It is indeed a pain to do. But it would in the long term benefit the game a lot. -
