Small plot has more usable yard space than a medium plot.

Title.

It seems that due to the orientation of where the houses are located small plots have more usable space than mediums and that doesn't make sense.

Small houses are nestled in the corner of their plot and Medium houses are more centered on the back of their plot.

The result is a small house has more of an L shape of usable lawn and medium house has usable front space and basically nonexistent side space. More of a U shape.

I doubt any change will ever come of this, but Medium houses should be placed in the corner much like small plots are.

Frankly, I always sort of liked that about medium plots, because I can simply ignore the small side spaces and focus on the front only with the limited items that I have, making the frontyard look less empty.

But I can see how not everyone prefers that and I was actually quite disappointed that all plots place the house in excatly the same place in regards to the plot.
I would much like to be able to pick - maybe only from a few options, it doesnt has to be 100% free - where I want any house on any plot.

Give both medium and small houses the L- and the U-shape option, aswell as one where the house is excatly in the middle of the plot.
Give mansions the option to either have the frontdoor across from the entery or be sideways to it. Give them a more L-shape option aswell - currently the only one we have is a large frontyard that can end up being sideways to your frontdoor, limiting your decoration-options.

But its not a call I'd wanna make for everyone! What I'd really like to see would be a few placement-options for each housing type, including L, U and center.

I would honestly just like more options in decorating the yard of the houses period. Even when you use up the maximum allotted item space, the front yard can still seem kinda bare.

If I want to consume my front yard with shrubs and trees, for god sake SE, let me.

I think that would be to do with not overloading the zone with too many objects, and potentially crashing or badly slowing down computers that can't handle it.

I know I've had friends comment that their game locked up after entering someone's heavily-decorated house - which is possibly why the game automatically loads you back in outside the house rather than in it.

We're in 2018, and while yes, your reasoning is still sound, I would like us (and SE) to stop using server limitations as an excuse not to upgrade QoL features and just get it done already. Personal computers have features within game to minimize the visual drawbacks and extra stress caused by them to their processors, so, it's not as if that the people who can't handle the extra stress can't simply just lower their own personal settings to ease their computer's overload.

Stop investing all of your money into your mobile franchises and other superfluous projects and actually start investing money back into your infrastructure so we're not going to be in 2020 in the near future with 2013 textures still in XIV.

Not sure if Im misunderstanding, but your title actually implies that the small plot has more physical land space than a medium. Which Im confident it doesnt. The distribution of land space is different on a small vs medium, and that distribution can lead to some interesting layouts, but Im not sure that its as big an issue since the issue is ultimately going to boil down to structure size vs land allotment. Medium sized houses are wider, and sit on a rectangular peice of land as a result, where as small sizes are more square on a square plot.

They could possibly correct it without adjusting any of the map itself by doing two things: 'Square' up houses and build them vertically, and Allow the buyer to choose where the house is placed on the property (either in set positions or a free floating object that can be placed within the property line, like housing objects.

If they ever do decide to change the orientation of the medium houses, I hope it's optional as I like the way they sit right now. The off-center position of smalls always drove me nuts. Different strokes for different folks, though; as long as I can keep mine the way it is now, I don't really care what they allow you to do with yours.

I would argue that the side spaces on mediums are a far cry from "basically nonexistent." I've used both sides of my FC's medium house. One has a cute little sitting area and the other is where I put the garden plots.

medium plot yard feels like its almost double a small plot, just counting the front
the back bit is borderline useless of course and depending on your model of house the sides can get cramped but should be enough room to fit some things

one of my house's sides is up against a wall so i don't use it at all and the other has a little seating area beside it so i just put up the various topiary along it as an example

it's the house model.
some like carbuncle and the castle are huge.
and others like paisa are much smaller

if you don't want to use the more advanced furniture placement techniques you can always swap out your house for a smaller one to place them then swap it back

I personally love the L-shape to the yard on my small house. The front is just like any house front yard, the side yard is like the secret garden. It's perfect!

Standard Glade Stone House skin (painted blue!) Skin swapping isn't necessary anymore. If you put an item in the storeroom and then place it directly from there onto the yard then it'll ignore the proximity restrictions, up to a point.

At least smalls have a better item-to-space ratio than mediums or larges. It's tough making the bigger homes and yards not look barren thanks to the incredibly low numbers of furnishings you can have.

The want for a proper side yard is what turns me off of medium and large houses. Medium and large plots should be large enough that they have a side yard that is at least comparable to that on small plots. It would also be nice if the house foundation could be moved and perhaps even rotated, like a giant piece of furniture, but proportional yard space would be a good start.

Is what you really mean. One shouldn't have to resort to bugs just to decorate, much as that is the current housing meta.

I was able to use the side space on my Shirogane medium for a bench for ocean-viewing (Which lamentably is largely obstructed by a large Shirogane castle) on one side and a row of topiary bushes on the other side that anyone coming down the side path to the house will see.

There are ways to use those skinny spaces, albeit somewhat limited ones.

We should be afforded much more customization with our houses. In particular, we should be able to place them within the plot as we so choose, just like a piece of furniture.

I also second the comments about SE needing to get off their arses in regards to item limits. Isn't this part of why PS3 support was removed? At the very least, if they aren't going to eliminate item limits, I'd like to see more features available for the houses. As an example, simply placing some organic-looking rocks and trees around the edges of my house currently eats up about 1/3 of the available items. That's ridiculous. Let me have some base 'landscape' settings for the house. Let me place groves of trees at once, so that a half-dozen with some plants around the base counts as a single item, not a half dozen or more.

One more comment. I'm sure there are likely to be people who read this, and think 'gosh, that's a bit harsh, we should be more forgiving of SE.' Generally, I'd agree with that sentiment, too. The reason I don't in this case is that the entire Housing system has been mismanaged from the very beginning. SE set down a path to build neighborhoods instead of individual house instances, and we've been paying for it ever since. We pay for it in terms of lack of availability; we pay for it (literally) in the form of a demolition timer; we pay for it in terms of limited exterior customization options (no add-on wings or the like); we pay for it in terms of limited outdoor furniture. All of these limitations can be laid squarely at the feet of SE's decision to build an in-game system that their infrastructure couldn't properly support.

SE's arrogance in this regard cannot be overstated. That's why I have very little sympathy for them when it comes to player criticism of the Housing system. They created this mess by biting off more than they could chew, and then doubling-down and refusing to go a different way. It's on them to do as much as they can to mitigate the downsides for players.

Even though i filled one of my sides with a targetdummy and such things.. i have to agree that 99.9% of the time its wasted space :(

Not to mention.. yeah.. i feel like the in-house limit is fine but the outside limit is very low and limiting at every size

And if Square Enix really want to keep the community feel... get rid of all wards but one (and no subdivision). Make each entrance to a garden a zone barrier (probably just the garden entrance with the rest of it being invisible walls), with a random house planted on it if anyone has a house in that zone. You enter the entrypoint, you get options similar to the ward choices when entering a housing area (to pick which ward). Just select the house you want, and load in. Could even add a range of tenancy counts in each plot to try and evenly distribute people out (so if one plot becomes too popular it becomes locked out until others get extra people in for example, but once the numbers become more balanced again the locked plots re-open, so as to stop one plot becoming the de-facto place to go). Instanced housing, still have "wards", everyone wins if you ask me.

Since apartments were meant to be personal housing, perhaps with this new system all personal houses could be 100% refunded with all items returned, and pushed into apartments (with similar instancing). Could also expand apartments then to have different sizes. They also don't have to give up on their community vision of wards, as you'd still have the different plots, but each "plot" would be instanced. I daresay it would do a better job than what we currently have. Since houses would be for free companies, and then an apartment complex for each individual player (just remove the direct access to an apartment from the entrance hall, have them go through the lobby, could even throw the apartment complex's market board there.)

EDIT: And one final point, as the gardens would be instanced too, they could drastically increase the item limit on outdoor patches of the plot too. Like they have with the inside. As each house including the garden would be instanced. Could even then make it so the door opened once you're wanting to go in, and make it look more realistic, rather than a door you interact with. The options are endless.

Whoever designed this games housing should not be employed by anyone, we can fault every single aspect of it, inside and out.


However, about the cottage plots being placed to the side with an L shape yard, i find this annoying and would rather have the house sit in the middle at the back like medium/large. Better yet, let us have the option of turning/moving the house on the plot of land, including the gate, so we can slide the gate to any position on the front fence (as long as there is not an exterior wall from the house blocking the way). This would be such an improvement that other plots that may not be so popular, would get a new lease of life.


Of course, some plots like 19/20/21 Mist for example, would need the steps up to the gate changed to make access possible, but well, you should not have designed it like that to begin with...
