It's not so much that I don't know how to tank. It's more like, I don't understand it.
Seriously... In dungeons, 40% of the time people are neutral about me, 30% they love me, and 30% think I'm garbage. For example, these past few days I've spammed that Shisui of the Violet Tides dungeon about a dozen times. The first 11 times I got a bunch of commendations. And the last one, one of the players said the following...
You... (dramatic pause) ... are garbage.
Here's my basic formula for drawing aggro...
Move forward. Once the monsters are close, I use flash twice, and then fight.
Here's my formula if it's a boss...
Move forward. Once the boss is close, I use that ability, whatever its called (the one that supposedly puts you on top of its enmity list or something), and then use flash twice.
90% of the time I draw aggro successfully. But for some reason, the rare times I fail, I get scolded severely by the other players.
I don't understand. Why the inconsistency in people's view of me as a tank? If I suck, I should suck all the time. But no. Whenever I get complimented, I get insulted as well. It's really bugging me.
I never use that ranged shield attack and I never use that weak-butt rotation that increases enmity. I've gone this far without them and I prefer to keep it that way.
What are your thoughts about my confusion?

For tanking, adapt to the situation... if you're losing aggro, focus on getting it back. Watch your enmity list too. If any stops being a red square, immediately focus on pulling it back. Also, when you have an enemy targeted (especially useful for bosses), there's bars underneath each job in the party list. The fuller this bar is, the more aggro they have in comparison to the one with the most. The one with an "A" next to their bar has the mob targeting them due to aggro. Hope this helps.

The ability you're talking off is "Provoke" and it doesnt work the way you think it does. You cant use it to build aggro, you can only use it to get aggro back. It "puts you on top of the aggro-list" in the sense that it takes the highste aggro someone has on the mob and adds +1 to that.
At the start of a fight there is no aggro, so Provoke does basically nothing.
...in regards to the rest of your post I'm not sure if you're just trolling - it almost reads like that.
You cant be serious about not using shield lob to pull a boss or Rage of Halone-combo to build basic aggro... Generally speaking you want to pull a boss by throwing your shield in their face, then build enough aggro to not lose the boss throughout the fight - one or two Halone-combos normally do the trick for me, depending on how good the dps is (gear- and skillwise) - and then drop out of tankstance for the rest of the encounter.
Rotating cooldowns, keeping your dots up and making use of Requiescat+Holy Spirit should be a given. -

I don't personally play tanks (except in small friends-only groups where we're low-manning older content), but I suspect that your boss rotation is where the issues typically come up.
Provoke is the ability I believe you're using, to place yourself on top of the enmity list. I may be mistaken, but I don't think this gives you a fixed amount of enmity - it just makes sure you've got more than everyone else. So if you're opening a fight with it, that's not very much, and healers or damage dealers can easily rip it back away. I'd recommend on bosses or single-targets that you open with Shield Lob instead, which gives a significant starting amount of enmity right from the beginning (and use Provoke if you ever lose hate for some reason).
Also, make sure you're using Circle of Scorn, too. Between that and Flash you should be fine, though Shield Lob again still has a use here, if you happen to miss one of the critters (the range on both Flash and CoS isn't all that big).

Oh...they were definitely rude, but judging by what you say your formula is, it's obvious that you're new to the game and don't fully understand how tanking works in ffxiv.
I highly recommend you read a PLD guide and ask veteran tanks for some guidance. You can also join the balance discord if you want, you can find a lot of interesting resources there, from beginner's to advanced guides, BiS, in depth theorycrafting and so on. -

1) Shield Oath
2) Fight or Flight
2) Shield Lob (to pull boss and generate some agro)
3) Circle of Scorn
4) Flash x1
5) That one OGCD attack (I think its green)
6) standard attack
7) Savage Blade
8) Rage of Halone
9) Sword Oath
10) DPS combo your heart to the rest of the fight as you should not lose agro at this pint unless you are really under geared compared to your teammates.

Here's what I do.
Always pull with shield lob. There's no benefit to face pulling.
Keep shield oath on at first. You can eventually start swapping to sword oath for more damage in some situations but this is something you should only do when you're familiar with the boss or dungoen you're running, and only do when you're confident the healer(s) with you can keep you up and you can maintain threat with it off.
As said above, provoke is not an enmity builder, you use it to pull an enemy back to you if you lose agro, or there's a tank swap mechanic on a boss in raids/trials. Same goes for the aoe taunt, Ultimatum or w/e it's called.
In aoe pulls, I pull with shield lob and use circle of scorn/a few flashes for enmity before I start spamming total eclipse. Don't forget circle of scorn as well. If I'm doing big pulls in dungeons I'll usually stop at each pack to get a flash off so they stay on me as I run to the next one.
On bosses, you generally don't need the rage of halone enmity combo if you're staying in shield oath, but if you're having threat issues it won't hurt to use a couple of these combos off the start. Generally if you're in shield oath, the extra enmity from that should see you through. If you want to start spending time in sword oath though you'll want to do a couple enimity combos before swapping to sword oath. But remember, going sword oath is something to think of doing once you're familiar with a boss, know its mechanics, and have faith in your healer. Having an off tank in raids that can shirk you also helps. Don't be pressured into going sword oath for extra damage if you're not sure in your ability to hold enmity and the healers to keep you up without it.
The way you phrased how you don't use the enmity combo and shield lob makes me wondering if you're sincere or not, but there you go anyway. Remember, damage is not the tank's main job. Your priorities are A. hold enmity, B. manage your defenses properly (ie don't get killed because you didn't use a cd on a tankbuster and handling boss mechanics properly) and THEN, at the bottom of the list, do what damage you can. There's no point in working to maximize your tank damage until you have the first two squared away.
For dungeon bosses this is my opener.
Shield Oath
Shield Lob
Rage of halone combo x2
Sword oath
Start goring blade combo, use flight or flight right before goring blade.
Royal Authority combo x2
One more goring blade combo before FoF wears off
Requiscat
Holyspirit x5(or as many as I can fit in before the buff falls off if I have to move.)

It is like every second dungeon run the healer -while not contributing any damage- will show an amazing APM typing something along the lines of "Shouldn't you be in Shield Oath?" the second I turn blue. I am at a point where I just politely excuse myself that my tanking style doesn't fit the Healers comfort zone and leave the dungeon. Really no need for that kind of discussions anymore.Quote:

If you can keep aggro, youre average. Keeping aggro as a tank isnt all that difficult typically, particularly if you have Shield Oath up. Now, time for the breakdown. Based on what you posted here, JUST HERE, you are a subpar tank who doesnt understand his class and skills. I am not saying that to be mean, nor am I saying it to be rude. Im just telling you what is the objective truth here. Based on your own account, you dont understand the skills you have in your toolkit, and its severely hampering youre ability as a tank. You are probably holding aggro decently (and this is a guess) because youre in Shield Oath 100% of the time and are not in lvl 70 dungeons. When you start getting into dungeons with serious gear disparity as well as players who have their full kits and know what to do, youre going to start seeing yourself having a greater difficulty keeping aggro.
As I said, go to the discord server I recommended. Lots of helpful and good info there. But in the mean while, heres a few things:
1) Your Rage of Halone combo is not 'weaksauce'. It is your enmity builder. Youre not supposed to use it all the time, granted, but when engaging a single target (like a boss) it is not a terrible idea to use the combo once, maybe twice to gain initial aggro, then swap to doing DPS combos like goring blade and Royal Authority.
2) When engaging single targets, using Shield Lob is also recommended in gaining initial threat at the very beginning.
3) Provoke and Ultimatem put you at top Threat + 1. Using it when you initiate is meaning less because the top threat at the get go is 0. This means whne you provoke out the gate, all you are getting is 1 enmity on the target. Your autoattacks can generate more enmity than that. Virtually anyones can. Using it when youre at top threat also only means you get a +1 enmity, making it meaningless. You use provoke when you are tank swapping or when you are really behind in threat and need to have it right then and there.
4) Enemies are generally tagged to one another. That means when you pull one, the others nearby will also come with you, and generally focus on you if youre the person who pulled. Shield lobbing to pull one enemy then rotating into flash spam (2-3 is fine), then using Total Eclipse is not a bad idea. If you are having trouble maintaining aggro on a particular mob because your DPS is blowing them up, then use single target, while using flash every so often to make sure you maintain hate on the other mobs.
There are advanced tricks and tips for tanking properly (like dropping out of Tank stance into DPS stance) among other things, but these are some of the immediate basics that come up.
Also in regards to something you said a little ways down:
Again, not to sound mean, but you are wrong here. You are literally gimping your ability to tank in favor of some misplaced idea about what skills should do what. If you dont believe me, go ask people who do the highest tier of content. They will tell you the same thing. Shield lob is a thing, and you should be using it. Youre main priority to be a tank. Stay a live, hold aggro. The better and more efficiently you do that, the easier and better it is for your party. So saying you dont use RoH and Shield Lob cause 'reasons', is like saying youre not going to ever use Rampart 'cause youve gotten along fine without it all this time.Quote:

Then i'll check the enmity list and use more flashes as necessary and pop a small cooldown like Rampart. If i'm double pulling i'll pop a bigger defensive cd and start using total eclipse when the hate is ok.
For bosses, lob, spirits within, halone combo x1-2, Scorn somewhere in there. After that Sword oath, flight or fight and dps combos if I think the healer can handle it. Else just dps in shield, keeping track of the enmity throughout the fight.
If you get a straggler you can use Provoke and lob/flash to get it back. This sometimes happens if DPS decide to hit things before you get situated or regens are on you. Ultimatum works as well (it is actually around you so you have to position properly) if someone pulls more than one mob off of you due to AoE, just flash them afterwards. -

This isnt the optimal Paladin opener, btw. But since youre tanking in dungeons, its not a bad opener. Im positive, however, that better paladin mains have better openers, but this kind of opener will pretty much ensure youll have threat almost 100% of the time. Youll only run into issues if your DPS is really good and/or really geared. In the event that your dps is great and are having a hard time, start using RoH again to maintain aggro. Remember, your #1 job is to be the tank and keep aggro, so do whatever you have to do to make sure that stays the case. If that means lowering your dps to maintain threat, then thats what it means.
This also, just as a point, is more damage output overall than double flash. Flash is perfect for aoe aggro management, but not so much for single target. -

You get commendations because you're a tank. For a lot of people all a tank or a healer has to do is just breath and they'll get a commendation. A good portion of the player base won't try to correct you for many reasons. One could be that they don't know the ins and out of basic tanking. Others could be that they simply don't care and just want to get the run over with. Then there are those who would comment but don't because when they do even if they're being super nice about it get a rude response back or ignored. They then probably say screw it to themselves and keep silent the rest of the run because it's not worth arguing over or they feel they'd get more improvement talking to a wall. There has been a lot of good advice and I'd hope that you don't ignore it.

Now, for the OP:
1). Please use Shield Lob. As others have said, pulling with Provoke is 100% useless.
2). I like to drop Flash then Circle of Scorn (Lv50+) as all the mobs are within range.
At this point, it really shouldn't matter what you do, as long as you do something, on Trash pulls. I'll usually throw a 2nd Flash, then maybe an Eclipse (the AoE physical attack or two) and then pick the lowest HP mob and start on it.
On Trash Pulls, I'm not really of the opinion that I care about Goring Blade, because it'll die within 3-5 seconds anyways. That leaves Rage of Halone, and Royal Authority. For Trash, I'll just go with RA, should be plenty. Also, you should be weaving in that attack that gives you the damage buff, Circle of Scorn, Holy Spirit, etc. Just throw the stuff out as you like, you should keep aggro.
Now for Bosses...
Definitely start with Shield Lob; the DPS like to blow all of their cooldowns right from the get-go. You want to get threat as soon as you can, and Shield Lob is the best starter. Immediately after Shield Lob, I like to flash as I'm running up to the boss, and then I will do a Rage of Halone combo. I know you think it is "Wimpy", but hear us out: The tooltip says "Additional Effect: Increases Enmity" . Well obviously if you lose threat on the boss, it's because you did not have enough enmity. Well, go get more enmity, and RoH is the best enmity around. After the first RoH, somewhere in there I'll dump a Circle of Scorn. Then the damage buff, and then Goring Blade.
After Goring Blade, I'll do Royal Authority combos until the damage buff wears off. If anybody is in the brown (30% enmity or more), I'll do another Rage of Halone at that point. If not, keep Goring Blade debuff on it, and keep up with the Royal Authority.
Of course, weaving in some holy spirits, and sometimes if you got a DPS crazy healer, some Clemency can let them DPS more and gets you more aggro.
If you do that in your 4mans, people will be more than happy to dump comms on you. -

You're genuinely new, so I believe you deserve a pass on this. I'm no expert at tanking, but I plan to level one soon. All I can say is this: practice makes perfect. I would also suggest looking up a guide for PLD specifically so you can get some rotations going and also receive some general tanking information. There is nothing wrong with going to an outside source for help if it helps optimize your performance.
This does not help them improve. If they are receiving criticism, they should be open to it so long as it is constructive. It's best to not ignore everyone who criticizes you. The forums are another story though and trolls should indeed be ignored.Quote:

Pull or mass pull basics:
-If they're all spread out from one another, shield lob then flash
-If they're pretty close together, run in then flash
-Say the mob pack you encounter has like 2 targets real close but the third is far. Run into the cluster of 2, flash, then lob the remaining last one.
If these basics seem unorthodox(for mass pulls), that's because as a war, I don't have the luxury of radial aoe moves like pld or drk to tag most things without needing an actual target. Nonetheless, these tactics work fairly well even with Pld or Drk.
Now for something a little more in-depth:
-Your enemy list will let you know how many mobs you tagged or they have tagged you and believe me, there's a very distinct difference. Say for example, you tag a cluster of 3 mobs but a roaming enemy comes along and one of your party members tag it and you don't, your enemy list will remain at 3 mobs until you attack it or it attacks you.
In another example, say you tag 3 enemies and then a roaming one comes along, attacks you, you don't attack it, and then another party member tags it, it will show up with a grey circle next to its name. That means the enemy is recognized but it's in combat with someone else. As a tank, that's your cue to tag it.
Speaking of colored icons...
Your enemy list will display one of the 3 colored icons next to their name:
-Red Square: This tells you that you have the main aggro. This is what you want at all times as a main tank.
-Yellow Triangle: This means you're in the second spot. This is not what you want. Provoke that dingus and steal back your first place aggro glory with enmity moves/combo.
-Small grey circle: The monster is across the hallway, slapping your friends. You see it. It saw you. It's still slapping your friends silly, usually the healer. You might actually want to tell it something controversial to get it's attention (Provoke) or just straight up punch it in the face and immediately cause enmity. Either way get it to attack you.
And now for some boss tips:
-As a pld, shield lob to start 100% of the time. I actually wanted to say 99% but you don't have a gap closer enmity move like drk or war have so you're stuck with shield lob.
-The enemy list ia not the only special snowflake feature to have icons. Your party UI as well. In a party of four, you should be at "A" while everyone else will have numbers 2-4. That is your aggro list. Provoke is the skill to use when you're not a "A" anymore. It will put you back there BUT only if you attack AND solidify your enmity. If you just use provoke and do next to nothing, you will stay down and it'll be an uphill battle from there. -

For pulling packs of enemies: flash flash then start 1,2,3 combo-ing them to solidify hate. For boss, shield lob, 1,2,3 combo once or twice then DD. Provoke, and the AoE variant are just for getting hate BACK if you lose it, and only put you at top of hate just barely. Have to do hate combo afterward to solidify hate. Once you are more comfortable with how hate is working out, move on to learning where to squeeze in damage abilities.
That said, 99.9999% of all "you are....bad" people are just entitled little shits that want everything to be a speed run. -

It has pretty much everything, except the newer stuff like the req + holy spirit spam or total eclipse addition during john F.madden mode, but follow this and you'll be able to pose proudly like the PLD in the pic.
