Ala Mhigo Reconstruction

I love Doma’s reconstruction so much, and I don’t want it to end! It’s a perfect way to get rid of crap you don’t need, while helping rebuild areas effected by the Garlean problem.

With that said, I want an Ala Mhigan reconstruction. Ala Mhigo is boring. It’s a beautiful land, and has incredibly designed zones, but it doesn’t really do anything beyond beast tribes, and raid rewards..

The issue is that Ala Mhigo as a city state is mostly still standing, but being put back in Eorzean control, it has a lot of cleaning up to do.

So I propose that we have a bunch of story arcs about cleaning it up, removing Garlean structures/designs that aren’t liked, adding new things, and working with all of the people who live there to come back to order.

I’ve critized the zones of Gyr Albania for being non interactive. You can’t go in most of the buildings, and it feels like they rushed everything that would of made it feel like a living world. Ala Mhigan reconstruction would help alleviate the lore bumps, and keep the item space in our inventories clean.

I'm sure it's more work for the devs to implement this. But it does seem right to have an Ala Mhigo Reconstruction as well, considering that Doma has one. Both area residents fought to liberate themselves from the empire and lost a lot along the way, so you'd think both would be reconstructing. (Though it could be possible to say that various Rhalgr's Reach instances during the MSQ is already like an Ala Mhigo reconstruction since it got destroyed and slowly added more services as the MSQ progressed).

Honestly, though, Ala Mhigo didn't kept me hooked enough to keep my interest for long compared to the Far East.
It's just a barren land with monks in it that have gotten executed by a mad king, and fell to garlean rule right after.

Maybe it was Ilberd his constant nagging and complaining about the ala mhigan people being oppressed that put me off.

That certainly didn't help, but they handled it really poorly as far as supporting cast goes, is my main complaint. Everyone we grew to care about in Gyr Abania ended up dead. They brought back that refugee we met in the Shroud and Fordola killed him early into the expansion. We got to know Conrad only to have him die before Castrum Abania. M'naago is adorable and all that but she's pretty shallow and we already got her in the custom deliveries.
Meanwhile Doma has Hien, Yugiri whom we've been with since ARR, and Gosetsu who ended up coming back from the dead. Then there's also the entire population of Doman refugees who were now brought back with the Reconstruction storyline, and the Steppe.
All Gyr Abania has to offer is Lyse. Even if you love her to death (and not everyone does, mind) , she's heavily outnumbered.

I want Ala Mhigo available as a playable city state to visit like the rest of places, and if I have to help rebuilding it for that to happen I'm up for it.

Well if we can add a massive statue of Raubhan I'd be all for it

It's disappointing we can do almost nothing on the Ala Mhigan Quarter.

I'm still salty we never got Ala Mhigo as a city and instead got the plot irrelevant Kugane. (Maybe it's fitting the area's started exporting salt.) But I'd take just getting the ala mhigan quarter fleshed out like the Doman Enclave at this point.

The Domans are nice and all but if I have to choose, I'd help Raubahn build up Ala Mhigo first since we've known him far longer. He has endured too long for this moment.

I think you hit the nail on the head with this, at least as far as I'm concerned. I *want* to care about Ala Mhigo. It's a beautiful zone with a lot of potential and obvious culture to be explored, but it feels like we rushed through it and I simply have no emotional connection to the land or its people. I would love to see some meaningful content that delves into the culture, gives us more NPCs to love, and has us exploring the different areas and the history around them. The msq did a wonderful job with Othard. It's a shame they dropped the ball on Ala Mhigo.

As far as Lyse goes, I love her a lot and it saddens me that she essentially got the same treatment as Ala Mhigo, especially when compared with Hien.

I can understand them wanting to use Japan for inspiration, as they are a Japanese company. But it really should have been done in its own expac because they way it is shoehorned into SB doesn't feel as much of a national pride thing as it does catering to the weaboo crowd in an attempt to get more subs.

They literally took a story that could have been something great, something we have been hearing about since ARR (I cant remember how much we heard in v1, if anything) and rushed through it, completely destroying the one thing SE has going for it. Storytelling.

Some ppl say it was because of Sam and they had to bring Japan into it because of Sam. But they didn't with Ninja even though it relates completely back to Doma and they could have given us dnc or blu or one of the other 20 jobs ppl ask for and saved sam til the JP centric expac too.

But regardless it feels very sloppy and Lyse, Raubaun and Ala Mhigo deserved better treatment.

At the very least, I can feel real passion from the devs when they made Kugane. They had a culture they could base it on, and it payed off in one of the best looking cities (Kugane) I've ever seen in a MMORPG.

I don't know what Ala Mhigo was suppose to be based on. The concept art just makes it look like another Ul'dah. The Ala Mhigo armor was rather mundane looking, and the purple cannons that are everywhere look like they were from a cartoon. I don't think the devs ever had a handle on what Ala Mhigo was suppose to be because they didn't base it off a real world culture. This is why I'm happy the Hinganshi and Doma got so much attention, because having been to Japan and having visited the Hunan mountain cliffs in China, it really feel special to me to revisit these places in a video game during a more medieval era. I can't ever visit Japan during the Edo Period so this was a treat for me. While I'd have loved to visit Egypt or Petra or Jerusalem during their heydays, Ala Mhigo is clearly not any of those. In fact, I can't understand why the Empire even took it over, clearly they weren't interested in their quarries or salt and that's all the region is, salt and rocks. It's basically a wasteland filled with poor people, not exactly at the top of most people lists on things people want to visit.

I was not saying it was bad, I am saying it should have been its own expac because they destroyed a very good storyline to shoehorn in something Japanese for no apparent reason. They either should have had this expac be the east or Ala Mhigo, but the two together do not work.

As someone who took a few History of Japanese Art classes I can also appreciate a lot of the design, it just had no place in the Ala Mhigo expac.

And I always saw Ala Mhigo as having a more Arabic design from the little we got of it. That could have been great, esp with some Indian influence since India has incredibly beautiful art, music and fashion and is greatly under represented in games.

I guess I'm saying if anything the Far East should have been Stormblood, and Ala Mhigo cut. I just don't find Ala Mhigo interesting, and I don't think having an entire expansion dedicated to it would have been interesting to most players, even with more development. This is just my speculation of course. Maybe they could have made it work like Assassin's Creed Origins, I dunno.

I have little to no interested in Ala Mhigo personally. We already have Ul'dah and seemingly Thavnair that are/might be similar aesthetic. I imagine Ala Mhigo could not stand on it's own and carry an entire expansion judging by the popularity of Kugane/Doma. Perhaps I'm wrong.

Stormblood really didn't paint the Ala Mhigans in a favourable light. The Domans have their ups and downs, but the Ala Mhigan commonfolk just come across as a weak, cowardly, prejudiced, whiny, bloodthirsy group. I'd find it more likely they ignore Raubahn and do something stupid like start a revenge war on the Eorzean Alliance.

The Ala Mhigans, to me, were never painted in a particularly flattering light. Let's not forget that Fordola, as a child, witnessed Ala Mhigans stone her father to death right before her eyes. Upon being imprisoned for her own crimes, at no point did the Ala Mhigans try to understand why she did what she did. They wanted to stone her to death as well.

Othard and Hingashi were far more interesting and enjoyable to me. The latter especially, given that it is neutral territory.

I also think people were too hasty in assuming that Stormblood was going to be the 'Ala Mhigo' expansion.

I think the reason why people say Ala Mhigo and Ul’Dah look similar is due to both having Islamic/Ottoman flavored architecture. That said, the two pull from different aspects of the source inspiration and if you look around the cities (imo) they're quite different -
Ul’Dah has its domed roofs and rounded off shapes

as someone who wants/has wanted a arabian nights orientalism themed house since i was able to purchase one I've been disappointed by the severe lack of Ala Mhigan furniture this expac. The palace is beautiful and I only ever get to see it when 70 roulette put me in there. I'll happily glue the city back together if I can keep some of them beautiful bricks ;;

I agree with the OP a reconstruction of Ala Mhigo would be nice. Because seemingly the attention should be splitted between the two in a good balance but Doma has gotten way more than Ala Mhigo did. Seeing how the city itself is a dungeon, a reconstruction of it could be possible imo because that would be personal developement thus newer people will still just have it as a dungeon while others could rebuilt in a extra zone. Its just strange that we were so long in Eorzea, helping it out, yet the only thing we did was finding that treasure for them, otherwise we have been helping Doma much more.

Well, that is if SE don't surprise us. The clothing so far has had that look to it, and some of the naming conventions do, so I am wondering if the Thavnairian Consulate's design is misleading or whether it is what to expect, since the Garlean Consulate's design is very clearly inspired by what we know of modern Garlean architecture.

They could also go with a more Indian-inspired design for its buildings, but we shall see. It could be that the naming and clothing are red herrings.

I could've liked Ala Mhigo, but most Highlander NPCs just piss me off.

Making fun of Uldah, Ala Mhigo, and Thavnair for having a similar aesthetic is like making fun Ishgard, and Limsa Lominsa for both having castles, or Hingashi, and Doma for being eastern. It’s just not a good argument.

The Hagia Sophia is Byzantine building, built by Greek-speaking Romans, with more in common with the Roman Pantheon, but whatever. I guess it seems Islamic now with the minarets.

Thank you for this explanation. I have been baffled as to why the Empire would be interested Ala Mhigo beyond "for the evulz". But then they took over Doma, which is so far away from the Empire, so that means they can just fly armies anywhere?

And your right, I have little wish to visit Thavnair, nor the Empire to be honest cause I don't like that "evil metal" look they got going on. I just gotta imagine their toilets are just covered in metal spikes because it's so uninspired. I'm semi-interested in Sharlayan, since that at least Greek influenced with teal lights. (They should play up the Da Vinci's workshop vib) I am most interested in seeing the rest of Hingashi. SE has proven to me they have a strong grasp at portraying asian cultures. They at least are playing to their strengths, that are uncommonly seen in video games made in America.

I would love to see them bringing backing Ivalice. For me, Ivalice was the best FF iteration a desert culture, with artwork and armor that was so full of charm.

I remember complaining somewhere on here that the Ala Mhigan Quarter wasn't being used for something like this. I just think the team has no interest in doing more with Gyr Abania than they already have.

Notice how the last several patches have been Doma-centric, with new content based around the Othard areas.

In 4.4 it's explained that when they razed Dalmasca the Empire shot themselves in the foot by destroying an important refueling station for their armies, making it diffiult to fly around the burn to get to Doma. And by putting up a barrier around The Burn, it because impossible for the Empire to just fly over it apparantly, guess the barrier is too high up to just fly over? So Doma seems relatiely safe from counter attacks for now.

Ala Mhigo as I understand it actually held the Empire back for a long time, and was only conquered because Gaius took advantage of a civil war. (I also hear that he may have had a hand in starting said civil war but I'm not 100% on that.)

With the stage set for an attack on Ala Mhigo in 4.5, I really hope it gets one last moment in the spotlight and some more development before we cross the land bridge to Garlemald in 5.0. The did leave the Fordola plot thread hanging, as well as Ilberd's two cohorts who were captured off screen. A big battle could be one last opportunity to make the expansion live up to its name too.

Aye, basically they couldn't beat the empire, were too cowardly to try and turned on an easy target to vent their anger... their own people, which is rather disgusting. Not to mention they stoned their own to death for siding with the Empire, but when you come to rally them to war, they'd rather stay submissive to the Empire.

And then the whole wanting to butcher Fordola in the streets and desecrate Zenos' grave while Yotsuyu walks straight into Namai in broad daylight and the Domans can be talked into reason. Not to mention the amount of resentment towards the other nations for not helping them earlier in their war, that they can barely be bothered to fight themselves.

I dont want to sound mean but some could just read through this thread because they would like a reconstruction and not necessarily get so many infos on the story. ^^;

Anyway a reconstruction would maybe help to finally learn more about the people there. And it always feels nice to really help them rebuilt too. (Even if I am a bit surprised how fast Doma for example rebuilts itself)

Also I still have hope that we in some way also help Ishgard too.

They couldnt beat Garlemald because they got attacked after a civil war. They probably did rebell but those got taken down quite harshly. (Lets not forget that this was over 20 years ago). Also some people doing something horrible because they saw her parents as traitors does not make them all into horrible people and those that are submissive to the empire are mostly those that lost their will to fight after losing nearly everything. Remember how Lyse was angry at her village that they did not fight even though they were mostly just old or wounded people that just went through much?

The people that wanted to kill Fordola was just an angry mob that wanted her to be punsihed more for her crimes but the game tells us through Raubahn that this is not the way to go and they listened to him. When she did help later, the people there were not friendly to her (which is normal if you went through so much) but also thanked her and with that probably at least forgave her a bit. I would say that this is quite the human reaction to it but also does show that they can let go of it too.

Unlike Fordola Yotsuyu was going there not as herself. Also she was wearing something different thus they did not recognize her right away. The Wol and Hien were right behind her thus the people (still shocked and probably also quite scared) had no real time to act. Do you believe that they would let it go so fast if this was the real Yotsuyu and not Tsuyu? I mean realistically Hien would have killed her if she had not lost her memories thus unlike Fordola who did land in prison, Yotsuyu would have probably got the death sentence.

In the end both crowds reacted on it and both crowds needed their leader or figure head to talk them down but listened to them, thus both could be reasoned with. The differences in behaviour could be explained by different cultures.

So just like Yotsuyus past and her bad life does not make all people in doma bad, the death of her father through some people also does not make everyone there bad either.

The imo bad thing is that we got to know more annoying Ala mhigan npcs through our journey, with no real way to learn more about them, while with Doma we met people like Yugiri and then later Gosetsu and Hien first and then learned about some bad things in the history of the land and at the same time still learn more about the good things now with reconstruction. So I feel like we really just lack any deep connection with the country.

On the other hand in Doma you have Yotsuyu's messed up backstory, not everything was bright and shiny there either. And it's not like we see only bad from them. Wanting someone like Fordola executed doesn't strike me as evil but realistic, and the mob was then talked down. By an ala mhigan no less. We see plenty of examples of positive ala mhigan characters throughout the story, it's not that one sided.

And it's not like any other nation is beating the Empire on their own. Heck, before Gaius took advantage of the rebellion against the Mad King ala mhigo was holding off the Empire just fine.

There's also many years in between the death of Fordola's father and the present. Years of struggle and bloodshed with nothing to show for it can wear down the morale of people. Nor is any society a monolith.

And as for the desecration of Zenos' grave, that was probably the Ascians given what we know.

Thavnair thus far seems to be if you threw everything exotic that reminded you of asia/middle east in a blender, and I certainly don’t mind haha.

Their consulate is actually pretty generic if you look at the surrounding “foreign” buildings. Of the 3 named ones, the exterior of the Garlean building is the only that really matches it's nation's aesthetic. The only unique accessories to the Thav consulate are the small, angular base of the roof’s dome (Ul’Dah’s juts out more to makes it look more rounded) and it's guards' fashion.

They leap frogged across their existing conquered groups to eventually land in Doma. While they can launch war via ship and airship, a very convenient land base would make it easy to regroup, refuel and then push forward from. A sky based attack is hard to defend against. A land/sea/sky package deal is pretty much impossible.

I don't think Ala Mhigo really needs a reconstruction effort. I mean a vast majority of the city still stands and could be rehabitable. From what we can see from the Foreign Quarter, the structures all seem to be functional. Compare that to Doma and Doma Castle. The City was destroyed by the Empire and Hein himself destroyed/flooded the castle. Rebuilding Doma seems realistic, but I don't see what needs to be done to Ala Mhigo outside of a new front door.

Plenty needs to be done! When a country occupies another, they make changes against that countries wishes. Instead it would be a reverse construction where one repairs the lives of the people living in the already existing structures.

There’s also an issue of Garlean nobles who live in the city. How did they go on? Do we keep them as hostages, let the willing stay? Or do we send them back? There’s plenty left to cover.

Doma Enclave is honestly my favourite thing out of Stormblood and i hope they continue this in future expansions

While I'd prefer an ala mhigan quarter reconstruction to flesh out at least a corner of the city of ala mhigo, I'd be lying if I said I didn't want more Hilda. Her english voice actress was great and she was a fun character. A shame she didn't get much to do ultimately.

Did you play the Lv60-70 machinist quests? Hilda was a major character for that story.
