Voice Acting

Has anyone seen any posts or news articles about the future of voice acting in game?

I would like to see a PC take a more active vocal role in the storyline since we were allowed to pick a voice type during character creation. Personally, having my PC stand in the background staring inappropriately and having an NPC do all the talking for my PC during cut-scenes is pretty boring. The only language my PC knows is grunting or screaming whenever i get hit.

Around town or even in instances, NPCs should be talking amongst themselves so you can "eavesdrop" on what they are saying. It would be more effective vice clicking on them.

Check the 2.0 teaser, it says it will have more voice acting on cs

I believe OP was specifically asking about our PCs doing the talking though ala SWTOR.

That would be an incredibly expensive endeavor. Considering how much money this game has lost already, I wouldn't hold my breath on this one.

I would be happy just to be able to pick things to say out of an ABC line up. Something needs to be done though because heroes lead. They don't just stand back and watch everyone else advance the situation then just go with the flow.

If Voice acting is a must then let the NPCs have a voice but leave my character as a mute. I don't want to have my perception of my lalafell ruined by a select few sets of voice over.

Option for Text-To-Speech synthesizers fine tuned for the game to avoid the TTS licensing fees!

And maybe that F'laymen miqo'te songstress can get a vocaloid voice and sing an opera at the next gobbue parade.

Nah... it would be nice if our characters had more involvement in cutscenes instead of looking shocked, emphasized nodding, getting their butt kicked by enemies we know we can beat, and letting everyone else do the talking.

I think we rarely gasp after the first story cutscene.

imo, only main story should have voices. too much voice acting entails bad voice acting.

Voice acting is worst idea ever for a video game. If NPC/PC does not sound just right all immersion is ruined and i stopped playing game and will buy new MMO with no voice acting.

When read harry pooter i fell in love w/ harry and hermoine... an den, in movie they all have english accent like WTF? instantly i return movie n i march to deh cashier n i says, "The actors in the movie have terrible voices! Now give me my 20 pesos back!"

thats why harry pottar movies never sold.

So you see, voice acting can damage game severely. do u want to kill Final fantasy OP? do u!? voice acting is fastest way to do it, just look at swtor. they sold like 0 copies. n no one will play it.

That true but the voice actor in ffxiv are people who does naruto,bleach and so on so i think we be hearing them again for 2.0 and new voice for the leader of each company.

I really did wish the 3 company had voice over when the leader where talking :( or ifrit :) that would have been cool.

They going to add voice like adults that comes out in Snoopy....

Oh and if they adding voice acting I hope they add option so players can decide to choose which language they want the voice in and have subtitle for cutscenes (pretty sure this part is no problem).... I can't stand Japanese anime with English dubs... when I found out Naruto on Netflix was all Japanese I was like YES!!!!! for FFXI I play on JP language locale so doesn't really matter to me lol

to each their own opinions, everything has 2 sides. there are people who love voice acting, while others who do not. played games with both kind, and those that have great voice acting really carry out the game. for them to think of doing these, would really require very good voice acting =p. i don;t mind it. as long not like vanille in ff13 >.< :X

I kind of like you have the silent protagonist role like classic JRPGs, it les you keep the imagination of your character's personality and helps you get into the supporting characters more.

Main stories should have voices.

I also don't like my character stale and dumb. Main stories only.


In combat I wont mind a rare chant or grunt once in a while. not spamming of course.

I think it would be really awesome to have a couple programmed lines that we could quickly say. Similar to how the ally signs work (which I wish more people would use), I'm invisioning something along the lines of Nexon's FPS Combat Arms; In there you could press F1~3 (iirc) and then pressing 0~9 would cause your character to shout the selected phrase.

In that game it was stuff like "Go, go, go!" or "Open Fire!" or "Reloading!" but I could definately see practical use out of things such as "I'm out of MP!" or "Don't go in there!" or "I'm being attacked!" or "Attack this one!" They could even tie them into the ally signs so when you pressed, say, F1 and then 0 to shout "I'm out of MP!", the little MP flag would pop up over your head. Or when the (presumably) tank said "Fight this!" it brought up the attack symbol over the targeted monster.

Of course there are more pressing things to tend to at the moment, but I do think it would liven up the game a lot and serve a practical value. When I'm fighting a ton of monsters, party messages can become lost or missunderstood in addition to usually taking far too long to type. When I'm tanking on gladiator I don't usually have the seconds required to type commands to my party members and it can be a distraction to force them to read something when they should be fighting. If they're not paying attention to the screen an audible "Watch out!" would be very effective at grabbing everyone's attention and notifying them that something is going happening.

I'd like my character to play a part in the story cutscenes. It's awkward when the NPCs are chatting up a storm about some major plot point, but all my character can do is stare silently, with the occasional look of shock. He comes across as a dope, honestly.

As it stands, I think the most successful cutscenes are the ones that don't include my character at all. If he's going to take the stage, I'd like him to actually participate in the conversation like a normal person.

If it is done right then the English voice acting can be just as good as the Japanese. Just look at Naoki Urasawa's Monster, it is voice acting perfection when watched in English, but in Japanese it's nowhere near as good. FMA is another anime with amazing English voice acting on par with the Japanese proving that English can be just as good.

I'm sure there are many more examples out there but I mostly watch everything in Japanese after the 4Kids One Piece incident, so my knowledge is limited.

We should never hear our characters talk. That is one of the reasons TOR is so awful.

Some are good indeed, didn't notice much on TV anime dub series myself since couldn't stand Dragon Ball and some other after that... so haven't checked those but like Studio Ghibli stuff or some anime movies with dubs do have good English voicing so those I can accept (still end up watching in Japanese though since I'm more used to watching anime in JP)

No, because I'd have to hear people from Limsa Lominsa talk. It's annoying enough to read, I don't want to hear a bad voice actor talk like a pirate. :mad:

It's one of the reasons I love SWTOR that my PC talks with a good amount of choices to weigh in on some of the conversations and change their outcomes.

BUT... for FF14, I would mostly prefer if main stories or grand company quests had NPC voice overs. Player characters can make their Link-style grunts at most.

Personally I want voice acting, especially during cut scenes. As to npcs there must be a way to program round too much repetition.
Slightly o.t but relevant. In the quest 'Futurs Perfect', after the encounter with the walking machine thing. I found that part of the scene in the clearing was complete with voice acting and sound effects. After that small section it went back to the normal silence. This has happened briefly before in quests. I wonder if the voice acting was actually done, but for some reason wasn't used.

i like both the jp and eng version of naruto bleach i only like JP version. They did say they adding voice over for JP so i'm sure they allow us to switch the voice over from NA-JP subs so no issue on that :) if the jp are better i switch over to that as long as there sub titles lol.

Instead of cheesy voice acting...
Give me a boss fight that needs a good strat, and take us 6 months to figure out how to beat.

people would complain and yoshi-p would make it easy to do :) example a lot of people dislike not having auto attack so they added i'm fine with that people dislike when leve did not give a lot of exp yoshi-p fix that the next sub patch. People dislike the servers marge idea they fix that which i understand. But some time if you making a game you have to put your foot down and say no i'm not changing it and no it should be done like this and like that i'm sorry we not changing it and not even thinking about it. At this point look like yoshi-p is trying to make everyone happy which in the long run going to backfire on him.

I hope there boss and fight and item that take longer then 1day to get -.-

Wouldn't it be better to hear in then subjugate yourself to ridiculously long and horrifically stilted writing?
