Controller - struggling with targeting

Hi all,

I'm wondering if anyone could give me a few pointers regarding targeting while playing with controller.

1) I have the following setting: 'when weapon is drawn'- all enemies and aggroing enemies

However, that does not stop my character from still targeting all NPCs - what have I done wrong?


2) when on SMN and wanting to throw a party member the odd heal, what's the easiest way to target them? Can you heal via 'target's target' at all?
If I enable 'target party members when weapon drawn', I'll just add more issues to the above problems.

Hold R2 and tap L1 or hold L2 and tap R1 to cycle through the enemys.

Use up and down on the D-Pad to cycle through the party-list.

You need a macro for target's target, the command is <tt> like: /ac "Physick" <tt>

Sounds like good advice!

Can you elaborate what target settings I need for this to work?

Also, I have never used macros in FFXIV and am playing on PS4 - will it still work?

Yes, macros do work on the PS4.

You don't need any special target settings, this should work anytime. I have the target filter to "all", however, R2 + L1 / L2 + R1 only targets enemys and up and down on the D-Pad only targets party members.

Maybe you can remap the R3 button to "target's target" in the System Configuration -> Controller -> the Config button top right. Then you switch to your target's target whenever you push the rigtht stick down (very helpfull as a healer).

Personally speaking, I recommend against healing anybody as a Summoner. However, the <tt> macros still work alright for Scholar.

Start -> All the way to the right of the ribbon -> Macros

Paste what he typed in the empty text box.

/ac is the "Action command". Immediately following will be the action you want committed.

/ac "Ruin"
/ac "Physick"
/ac "Adloquium" being examples.

The modifier after that, <tt>, means "target of target". Generally these will only target the main tank, since that's who your enemy's target should be. <t> means "target", <me> casts it on you. <x> will cast it on the xth member of your party list; ie, <2> will cast on the party member in your list marked "2".

If I wanted to specifically target a heal to "2", then my macro would be

/ac "Physick" <2>

Macros are definitely fun to experiment with--this game intentionally makes them a bit janky to use in combat, so people don't just macro whole combos together, but they are definitely worth studying, and definitely work on PS4 as well :)

As for healing anyone on SMN - currently still levelling the Arcanist and partying up with my partner , so every once in a while we get overwhelmed in quests / fates and he needs a bit of a top up. I am not looking to dungeon heal on SMN :)

Holding either L2 or R2 and then pressing either L1 or R1 will cycle through all available enemies near you, alternatively you can hold L1 and press up or down on the D pad to cycle through any enemy on your agro list, lastly you can just press left or right on the D pad to cycle through everything infront of you which is what I'm assuming you've been doing.

I have mine set to where I only target NPCs when i have my weapon sheathed. However I would not recommend that if you are a healer.

Assuming you have access to a keyboard as well, F1-8 can be used to quickly target a specific party member.
L1+R3 switches the controller to a virtual mouse and back, with L2/R2 functioning as left and right mouse buttons. Depending on how quickly you can do this it may help as well.
The PS4 controller's touch pad also functions as a mouse, though far less precisely than the virtual mouse mode; Drag to move the cursor, tap to click, hold a double tap to hold the button. That last command in particular is especially touchy about working right, but this method may also help

You can also adjust what is targetable in Character Configuration.

Character Configuration > Control Settings > Filters

You can adjust settings for the weapon sheathed and weapon drawn states AND you can enable additional filters activated by pressing L1 + "a face button"

There is also an option in the settings that allows you to never target other players' pets. This is pretty useful - except in extremely rare cases when you need to be able to do so. For example, a dungeon run where your tank d/c'd and the group decides to continue using the Summoner's Titan-Egi to tank. (I've been in this boat many times, both as healer and as Summoner!) Just turn the option off for those rare cases.
