It's as if they are still unaware it can be bypassed by editing. But hey, less editing at least, most posts wont hit 3000.
The default setting on vB is 60,000 tho, which cannot be bypassed.
Question : Why just not... going to a REAL coherent limit? . . . no because ok its cool, 3k instead of 1k but why not going to atleast 20k or 50k? ...
Well thank you, better than nothing at least. Still wished we would not have a limit at all.
Well, it's not a ton of extra characters, but I'll certainly take the progress nonetheless.
Thanks. It's a minor QoL update, but appreciated nonetheless. Looking forward to future improvements.
Would have preferred a entire forum board engine replacement..but this will suffice.
Has this actually been changed, or is it just for general discussion? After reading this post I've hit the 1k character limit twice in two different threads both times being under 2k characters. Both instances were in English Forums > Gameplay > Markets and Retainers if it makes any difference. If this change is coming in the future, can you give a date estimate?
The title of the topic made me really excited.
But only 3000? Well, better than 1000... However, we are editing posts to bypass the limit since forever and it seems nobody had a problem with it. So why not simply remove the limit completely, when it is allowed to make longer posts?
I really don't understand...
Sure unlimited would be nice, but most of the posts I get nailed for are like at 1100 or 2000 characters. So I think this will mean I have to edit a lot less.
Why is everyone complaining? This is great. I’ve written plenty of posts that hit the 1000 limit but can now go through, and I don’t think the 3000 limit is going to be a problem very often. And when it is, you can still edit to get around it!
Thank you, hopefully one day it's based on time subscribed or join date but this is great.
Speak for yourself. I for one like reading and writing posts that aren't so short and devoid of detail that it may as well be a shorthand text message. Larger limits allow for more detail and nuance on a subject that probably needs more than three sentences to discuss. And as people have figured out how to bypass the original 1k limit anyway (and that SE clearly doesn't care) there doesn't seem to be any real reason to have a limit at all or at least not one so small. A larger limit also reduces spam too since the people who aren't aware of the bypass technique usually wind up making a chain of posts anyway.
So I for one am glad that the limit has been increased, even though I wish it were higher or gone completely. Most of my longer posts don't usually exceed 2k characters anyway.
Side note, it would be nice if SE added a character counter so I don't have to attempt previewing or posting just to find out I'm only a few characters over the limit, which has ironically happened with this very response.
Side sidenotequestion: Is this change live yet? Do I need to clear cookies? Because not counting this paragraph here, this post is well under 2000 characters and the forums are still preventing me from submitting it normally.
The way I do posts on the forum is by writing the entire thing regardless of the character limit, copy it to the clipboard, delete everything but the first line, and then paste it. I've occasionally erased posts this way, but it's better than writing "long post incoming, please wait 30 minutes", and the entire thread grows 5 pages before you finish.
But the limit is really about trying to keep posts concise, and you can do this in Japanese. In English however, often the person you reply to eats 800 characters, and thus it's incredibly obnoxious to reply to a thread where multiple quotes are involved.
I'm a verbose person, and even I haven't been barked at for having 2000 characters over the previous limit. That's a loooooooooong post. I'm quite sure most of us can express our point in 3k or less ;)
Thank you for the change!
My replies tend to be either short, of if I'm being detailed on something, literally right over the 1k mark to about 1800-ish characters. The only time people really need to worry is if they're typing many huge paragraphs, or posting an idea or something they had into the forums.
Just be glad it isn't twitter on the character limit. I'd have gone over that by now with my post.
Yaaaay, thank you Rinrin!
Ah. That’s pretty neat!
More than happy with this, as most of my posts tend to end at the 1,100-1,500 limit.
Welcome to 2018?
Sadly this seems to be limited to general forum only? Made a post with maybe 1.5k characters and needed to edit it..can we not have this in every part of the forum?
Edit: Or like Kisai said, maybe only for new threads? But why?
To be honest they should get rid of the limit all together and the daily amount of posts.
I went into a general forum thread that was created today and it still had the 1000 limit..
I dont see how limiting to 3k character avoid long post because... it is a limit when you post, not when you edit...
Now, why most of all other forum dont get this kind of limit?
Why it was not this limit even 15 years ago? ...
FFXIV forum is one of the less ergonomic i know... greatly due to this 1k/3k limits limit that give nothing because we can just edit to go over... (easier to cut half of your text, post, edit, paste, post... )
Sweet! Now I can write my Final Fantasy XIV fanfiction! :D
The new character limit is definitely not for new threads only - commented on two threads so far made today and still got the "your post has exceeded 1,000 characters; please shorten it". Pls. ;_;
I mean.... a limit that can easily be by-passed with editing.. seems silly to have a limit at all. But whatever, at least it'll mean less editing in a lot of posts just to get your point across. I'll take it.
This brings me joy, but for all the wrong reasons. It's because if someone asked me to make a meme about SE improving something, this is what I would have created. Upgrading the limit to a still irrelevant value, and announce it's live, except it isn't because they didn't actually test it.
I have to pay to post in this forum, yet do I have more limits?
And, if it can be bypassed by edit, whats the meaning of the limit at all?
Remove it now, please. I'm, and a lot of players, are tired to see players needing do explain "you can bypass the limit editing your post" whenever is needed to post more than 3k.
I repeat, this limit is worthless.
XD thank you
This is a terrible argument.
When I went to school, this has been considered normal. To backup a statement so much that you do not have play "argument volleyball" back and forth just because everyone can't be bothered to read more than two lines.
But eh, the educational systems worldwide seem to have changed and fit the short attention span of the Millenials.. That watch Netflix series with 1.5x speed while playing video games during their chat on the phone...

Can we get this for replies, too?
