As my boyfriend has told me, he'd rather stare at a female butt all day then a male one. So I shrug.
Welcome to Final Fantasy and the last several decades of anime influenced media.
This more due to your perception than to actual numbers, I'd say - check this: http://ff14net.2chblog.jp/archives/50236197.html
I ts the official census from 2016 (I couldnt find a more recent one this quick). Even though its japanese its easy enough to read that the gender-distribution favours males over females.
In japan it was close to a 50/50 split back then, while both NA as EU had more of a 40/60 split, favouring male characters.
Unless that drastically changed during the past one and a half year, it only seems that 3/4 of the characters are females. (granted, I'm not sure if the census included all the generic male-midlander-bots)
My personal theory to why it seems that way would be: Some male characters are appearing kinda femine already - specially elezen, aswell as some midlanders and mi'qote. For lalafell its almost impossible to tell wether its a male or a female - you can totally make a male lala look like a female one! With gear often catering more to females aswell (dresslike robes etc.) you may not actually mistake a male elezen for a female one but when you're just glancing at a crowd might not notice how many males are actually hiding in there.
I don't enjoy playing as the opposite sex. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I usually do it because I just enjoy what I create with female characters, like the current hairstyle I have. It's just hard for me to get into making male characters when glamour wise their clothes can be a little plain for me. Otherwise I would have made one by now for fun. :(
I have 3 female and 4 male characters on 2 accounts. Also all my retainers is guys. Not sure about this ratio females out numbering males. Seems to me guy have just as many outfits as females. I nnow all veteran reward outfits was based off guy characters from other final fantasy games.
In this game female character looks extremely beautiful, but in wow you pick something that looks more like cool or funny because female characters in that game is that not that pretty.
I honestly play as a female character because there are TONS more options for glamours, and honestly, when trying to figure out a glamour(always zoomed in at this point) prefer the close up of a female to a male. >.>
It seems more like people tend to pick the gender that more aesthetically "fits" the given race. At least that I've noticed. That's why you tend to see more male roes vs female, and more female miqo vs male. I usually like to pick a gender that'll (to me) fit the class I'll main more but it also depends on the creation options in a given game. The census gives some interesting trends in gender and race distribution that kind of goes against the generic expectation, like when people say miqo'te make up the majority of chars when they really don't. It's all about visibility I suppose.
im a dude that plays female characters for me the main reason is cuz i can make better looking female characters than male and because imo the gear for females are better.
Oh my god, people outside of my control are doing things they like. Better complain on the official forums about it!
I don’t really play other MMOs so I can’t speak on the female to male ratio in them, but I prefer female characters because I’m a female and tend to play characters the same gender as myself. And most of my characters are based off of characters I have created in the past, which tend to be female.
I have alt female characters but my main is male. I play as a male to help enjoy the story line. When i accomplish a feat, or am told of my deeds it's my representation in the world of Hydalen that i see. For others that's simply not a focus. Besides, it's very rare i get to play a male protagonist with my skin tone in any game. Not many latino characters out there.

There was no such thing as a male Miqo'te eight years ago.
Haven't you heard that MMORPG means Many Men Online RolePlaying Girls?
I usually find female characters more visually appealing and if it's something I'm going to be looking at for as long as I have the character, I want to enjoy looking at it (none of that "because female butt" nonsense though--I mean some games have an art style that give females phenomenal bodies, but that's not exactly the same thing as finding them visually appealing, even though it still plays a small part in my choice). It mostly boils down to how equipment looks on them and their range of animations--one of the reasons I'll never play a female Midlander even if they otherwise fall into the "attractiveness" category of my checklist. If I'm playing a game with male characters that meet my aesthetic tastes, I'd play one of those too.
I've never been one of those players who has a dire need to play same-sex characters because I've never been the kind of person who would typically make a character as an expy of myself. I'm already me, so when presented with a blank canvas in a fantasy world I want to be creative instead of just making a copy of myself. That's not to say I don't see the appeal of visualizing yourself in a fantasy world and making your character to reflect that. That's just not what I personally aim for and I feel like most games allow me to better exercise my creativity with female characters.
Thank goodness that's not the case now!

I recently started playing female for the smaller build. The only small build males are lalafells(and I dislike them) currently. I personally wish the catbois were very twink like some of the original concept art depicted them instead of the generic "built adventurer"
More meaningful muscle sliders would be nice in that regard. The current ones do hardly anything at all. I have them as low as they get for height and muscle definition and I'm still wishing I could be a little shorter, a little less muscular. XIV is still the only MMO game that's fun to play and aesthetically pleasing (in my opinion) so I guess I'm content for now though... I mean, if we want to talk "built" look at the male options for any Western game... they seem deathly allergic to "cute" in any form. But in the spirit of equality they'll let everyone wear every hair style. Beards for women, twintails for men. I don't understand.

:P my lil sub rogue isn't too, too shabby ^_^v
Part of those who started playing male characters has convert themselves to female solely for more glamour.
Females play females
males play females
There are still bots on the Japanese servers. I've seen plenty around.
The other interesting chart there is the second one, showing race choice. (I can't really 'read Japanese' but I can scrape through with katakana enough to recognise the names.)
Clockwise the segments are Hyuran (dark blue), Elezen (red), Lalafell (green), Miqo'te (purple), Roegadyn (light blue) and Au Ra (yellow). All fairly even across the three charts.... except for Lalafell which is 28% in Japanese servers vs. 18% elsewhere.
Another chart that isn't there but I think would be interesting, is a four-segment pie chart for each race showing clan and gender choice.
I don't know what the official ratio is in this game across all servers and data centers, but I do know that there is definitely no shortage of male characters on my server. I can't speak if they are rl males or not, but it doesn't matter to me. The pronoun I give to players both in-game and on the forums is the same as the gender they choose to play, unless they tell me otherwise.
Speaking for myself, I have always chosen female characters when given the ability to do so, and gravitate towards console games where the main protagonist is female. #SamusAran. Anywho, my love for healing is also a big influence. I'm not sexist or anything, and it is perfectly fine if males want to be healers. But for myself, I feel more attuned to the role when playing it as a female. There is also the gear selection. No doubt about it, female healers have more to choose from if they desire to be feminine, and less so if they wish for a darker, more intimidating appearance. Since I prefer the former, I am completely at home playing a healer in this game.
If it truly does seem like there are more females than males... well my dear, that because we rule the world! :p
Why does it really matter all that much? Some people like to play something they are not, and playing the other gender further separates this from real life. Personally I make my casters female and my physical damage dealers male, I started as a archanist and then learned you could do everything on a single character so I have no real reason to have any alts much less a male one.
I also happen to like how my character looks so I have no interest in using fantasia to change anything.
Try playing TERA, literally 90% of the people you run into are playing naked lolis. It's actually pretty perturbing after awhile (and boring, I get tired of seeing the same race and class everywhere I go.)
